Nitroglycerin
May 17 2010, 11:34 AM EDT
I was looking up Nitrostat as a medicine and come to find out it is Nitroglycerin... Nitroglycerine is an explosive obviously and it seems easy to manufacture from what I have read. I just don't know how exactly to manufacture it safely.. My dad is on Nitro and it would be good to know how to make in a pinch.. Do you find this valuable?

seriously dude, if you want to make any explosive, please do not try to make nitroglycerin. Hundreds of people died in the early days of making it because it is so unstable. I think TNT was invented using similar materials as an alternative because anyone who tried to make nitro in the day was batsh|t crazy.Seriously, DONT try to make nitro! Most definately don't do it using a guide from the internet of all places. It's cool, sure, but you could F yourself up, go for a more stable explosive if you want a bang Do you find this valuable? |

he's not making it as an explosive, but as a substitute for the meds because when SHTF and they can't get Nitro for his dad he doesn't wanna be SOL.That being said, I still don't think it's a good idea... Do you find this valuable? |

I've never heard of it as a med, is it the same stuff they use as explosive? Because the issue is the fact that it's so unstable and if the smallest error is made the maker might be turned into mush lol

Nitro is highly unstable. Don't ever try to make it. Ever. Try finding ways of getting nitrostat in other ways, BESIDES making it.

"I've never heard of it as a med, is it the same stuff they use as explosive? Because the issue is the fact that it's so unstable and if the smallest error is made the maker might be turned into mush lol"Nitroglycerin is commonly used in ERs and ambulances worldwide as a way of stopping cardiac arrest aka a heart attack. It causes expansion of the blood vessels in the body including those surrounding the heart. This can help with a heart attack which is caused by blockage in these blood vessels. The heart is made of muscle and when muscles do not receive enough oxygen they die...A heart attack is part of the heart muscle being damaged and dying. The increased blood flow carries more oxygen to the effected area(and whole body). I common side effect of nitroglycerin is a really bad headache. Nitro should be administered under the tongue. This area is VERY vascular. Nitro is usually in a dark colored bottle. KEEP NITROGLYCERIN OUT OF DIRECT LIGHT. So David you will find plenty of Nitrostat in the places I listed. Just remember the tips I mentioned. Oh and watch your back out there scavenging... Do you find this valuable? |

Ah right, thats quite interesting, thanks.Poppers (alkyl nitrate i think) also cause expansion of the blood vessels. I wonder how close it is to nitroglycerin in its chemical make up. They are sold as a "room odoriser" because they are illegal as a solvent. It is liquid, they evaporate very quickly meaning the user just has to open the bottle and breath in the fumes. I did quite a bit of internet research on them a while ago, and couldn't find any reason why they were banned as a solvent. Maybe its just the fact that they are a solvent. Before it was banned, doctors used to prescribe it to help with chest infections. I dont know what it would do to the hearts health, but i do know that it opens up the blood vessels a lot. I've taken it on its own, which is rubbish as it hardly does anything. But when taken with ecstacy gives an AMAZING high, albeit very short-lived. At a music festival one night was freezing, me and my mate kept sniffing it because it warms the body up a treat for about 20-30 seconds. As a liquid is it very irritant, and can cause minor burn marks on skin. Do you find this valuable? |

Well if the purpose is to replace it medicinally... At the risk of sounding like I'm suggesting something inappropriate (I assure you I'm not) Viagara was originally developed as a medicinal replacement for nitro tabs in heart patients. The reason it "works" for it's intended use now is due to the vascular reaction it has on the body. A 1/2 dose of Viagara is comparable to a nitro tab, just not as fast acting. http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/archive/index.php/t-483056.html EDIT: changed "hear" to "heart" 1 out of 1 found this valuable. If you have nitroglycerine then you also have dynamite. If you have that then you have a cmparativly more stable explosive than nitroglycerine.

Medical nitro is not explosive because it is much more dilute than dynamite. I can not say the exact percentage but you would need a lot of medical nitro to make a bomb. Don't try to make it you'll shoot your eye out. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Unless you know the exact difference between medical nitro and explosive nitro, don't even THINK about making it or giving it to someone as medication. You'll either blow your head off or kill your dad.

If you are a pharmicist then knock yourself out. Or degree in chemistry will sufice. Do you find this valuable? |

You could just scavenge some. I would expect almost any health care facility to at least have one bottle in stock.

It is childishly simple to make it is basic chemistry but it is mind bogglingly stupid to do it without the proper equipment and training don't do it Nobel blew up his nitro factory several times.Do you find this valuable? |

"Medical nitro is not explosive because it is much more dilute than dynamite. I can not say the exact percentage but you would need a lot of medical nitro to make a bomb.My father used nitro tabs for 15 years. He had about 5 tabs on him at all times in a key fob. That fob was dropped, thrown, fallen from scaffolding, in short any number of shocks. I think that not only is the concentration slight but that the binder increases stability. In either case there is not enough of the compound able to interact where critical mass can be achieved. From wikipedia: "Nitroglycerin is also used medically as a vasodilator to treat heart conditions, such as angina and chronic heart failure. Nitroglycerine has been one of the oldest and most useful drugs for treating and preventing attacks of angina pectoris. After more than 130 years of such use, in 2002 it was discovered that these effects arise because nitroglycerin is converted to nitric oxide in the body by mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase,[1] and nitric oxide is a natural vasodilator in the body. Nitroglycerin comes in forms of tablets, sprays or patches." 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
