Defenestrate Is a Good Word. What Else Is?
May 17 2010, 1:44 PM EDT | Post edited: May 17 2010, 2:02 PM EDT
It describes the act of throwing something through a window.

Usufruct is another good word.

It's a legal term, which denotes a right to seize or borrow another's property, with the understanding that that property won't be damaged.

You know what else is a great word? Lickspittle.

It's the same thing as a sycophant. Which is the same thing as a brown-nose. Which is a servile person who sucks up to the powers that be to get some sort of favour or profit, and/or tells lies about someone else out of their own self-interest.

Mollycoddle's another dandy one.

As a verb, it describes the act of excessively pampering (I hate that word) someone or something, overprotecting them and/or treating them with general over-indulgence.

As a noun, it describes a "pampered darling," usually a male, that's been overprotected and spoiled.

Guess what else is a wondrous word. Mucous.

What are y'all's favourite words? Post 'em here for all to behold and oggle obtusely.

Anything goes, really, but the more obscure (usufruct) and/or potentially suggestive (lickspittle), the better.

I'm also featuring hither thread, because words be powah, yo.

Boondoggle is a word that rolls nicely off the tongue. Many classrooms engage in valueless or trivial pencil pushing or conversation to convey to the powers-that-be that they are, in fact, busy.

Plethora: too many of something, good or bad.

Brouhaha. Something that causes confusion and turmoil over a relatively minor, but sensational, event. I have one of these at my house about six or seven times a day.

A counterpane is found on my bed. I sleep under it at night.

I enjoy the way poppycock sounds. It sounds downright silly. I do not like the origin of the word, though.

Chlamydate induced some surprisingly derailed trains of thought in me, yet it's meaning is somewhat of an anticlimax

Regale is one of my favorites. When I see a friend that I haven't seen in a long time I ask them to regale me on their past exploits. Do you find this valuable?

Fellahin means a farmer or other husbandman, and I have seen it used as an adjective meaning "pertaining to peasants." Seeing it in print brought back fond memories of lies I heard in Iraq... "I swear, I don't know anything! I'm just a farmer!" Do you find this valuable?

Widdershins, I.e. to move anti-clockwise or against the direction of the sun. This is the last remnant in English of the Northumbrean language known simply as 'Dialect' Spoken by the Reivers of northern England and southern Scotland and from whom we have the word;

gregarious is one of my favorites.
It means that one is very sociable, or refers to groups of animals who live in nests but do not form a true colony.

Is ginournous a word yet? It's something even bigger than enourmous or gigantic and sounds a lot better than both. I heard it was going into the dictionary. Do you find this valuable?

Masticate is a fun word. E.g.: I was in the local mall hanging out in the Food Court while masticating.

And I like "***********". It's one of my all time favorites.
