I wouldn't loot there things unless I was damn sure that they weren't coming back. If the whole neighborhood leaves except you, and a few survivor to return to their homes to bunker down, only to find their houses ransacked, who are they going to blame? And how are they going to react?

You can't assume that at least a few of them won't return simply because they make the poor choice of heading to town to pick up last minute supplies.

"But how would you guys capitilize if you saw all your neighbors leaving (you wouldn't know where) but the assumption was WalMart?"
Leave them be, aside from the risk of someone else being home guarding said things, the home owner turning around and finding you or some yahoo seeing you and forming up a lynch mob to kill your thieving ass. Also depending on how much of society's infrastructure has collapsed you might found yourself on the wrong side of the law if LEO's spot you.

If you plan to wait, till the disaster turns down your block, before you go shopping, you are already a casualty. Avoid the rush, stock up today, cause on Z day, about a zillion people will have been down the asiles before you, and even if you do mange to find everything, odds are you wont make it out of the parking lot with your goodies.
Good luck on z
day

I don't kill, I steal...

If you plan to loot just wait it out. Basically I feel like I will have to hold my location down until everyone around has either perished or left. Only then would it be possible to loot safely. If your neighbors have stuff you could use you have two options until they die. Do you form up or murder them? Pretty much the way I see it.

Very dire and bleak but not having supplies as ALWAYS a bad thing no matter how you look at it. I would say to have at least a week's worth of everything you need at the minimum. I feel that if you can only afford 2 days or so, by all means do it and just make sure that when you shop (before SHTF) you just get a little bit extra each time of non-perishable items. Soon, it will add up and that way, it is gradual. This allows you to achieve this if you don't have the money to get all that you need now.

As for the "Back Is Against The Wall" and yo have no choice, you really need to have several thing working for you:
1st: Not alot of people around, most will have to have fled or are unfortunately deceased.
2nd: No zombies or VERY FEW zombies around the areas you intend on searching
3rd: That said stores (whatever they are) or locations you intend to scrounge up supplies in have not been burned down, have not collapsed, been bombed, etc.
4th: That you have transport (at least an ATV I would say, don't try to hoof it because you can't run with 100 pounds on your back for long) that is in good, working order.
5th: That you have a means of defense and a means of entry (crowbar, shovel, ax, etc.)
6th: Don't forget to bring something to carry it all inside of since you can't depend on the store to have a backpack or something to put it all in.
7th: The location you are intent on returning to needs to be secure while all this is going on... and it must stay that way.
8th: A real good contingency plan must be in place.
