Test season coming for my plan
May 30 2010, 10:53 AM EDT | Post edited: May 30 2010, 10:53 AM EDT
Hurricane season is about to start, and it will give me a chance to test my BOL in a real world situation. This season is supposed to be as bad as 2005,so there is a good chance I will have to evac from a hurricane.

I will keep regular updates as the season goes along.

you may already be aware of the prerequisites for action to BOL:

> 1/2 tank fuel
enough cash on hand to last a week
cell phone(or calling card) and important phone #s
> 3 days' worth of clothes
maps
bottled water (or canteens)
food, prepackaged non-perishable

Read my plan. I already have all of those(and more) in place.

I didn't see the following (just a quick scan, so maybe they are on, but buried)

Passports/driving licences
Insurance documents
Birth certificates
Bank records
Lawyers' details
House deeds/mortgage papers

All those should be in a water-tight box, that preferably floats, but is too heavy to get blown away.

Already done. One good thing about the city, county, and state government here is that a major hurricane awareness program was started after the nightmare of Hurricane Rita. The program includes info on securing important items.

A lot of Houston tx citizens try to be prepared, at least in the regards to legal docs, and other important papers.

The first Hurricane of the season is bearing down on us. Hurricane Alex looks like it is going to the south of Me , so we probably will not have to evac, but It will be a good training situation/exercise. Do you find this valuable?

A few more hurricanes are forming in the Atlantic, buy they are going up the east coast from me. This tells me to get even more ready, because my area gets hurricanes after September. Do you find this valuable?

We are far enough in-shore that it shouldn't be a catastrophe, the only problem that has a good possibility of happening is wind damage. And that's if it swings back around for shore.

As for an apocalyptic event, I don't own a BOL, nor cool assault weapons, nor massive stockpiles of food. I have the food in my house, a 12 gauge shotgun, a .22 rifle, and everything in my BOB.

That s a good start. I would look for cheap land somewhere inland for a BOL. Land that many people do not want,(hilly, mountainous, etc.) could make a good location for a vacation home/BOL.

Just be creative. I tell a lot of people to check the craigslist free section, and join the freecycle groups in their area for free resources.
