This is an awesomely good topic. Those of us with very little experience of cooking in the wild could learn something useful.I'll mention a Dinner Dish: Chilli made with Turkey (Serves 2) Salteen Crackers EZ-Cheeze (Yes, I still have a few cans!) I currently have these seasonings to add to my BOB: -Garlic Salt -Hamburger Seasoning -Louisiana Hot Sauce -Parmagane cheese Beverage mix: Ocean Spray Cran-Pomegranate, Ocean Spray White Cran-Peach. This is bringing out the wannabe chef in me! Do you find this valuable? |

My recipie is a variation of an african dish called moffay(not sure of spelling). It is a bit unusual, but it is about the only thing I could think of that fit my ingredients, and was different enough to fit a recipie competition. I will present it in such a way as to allow folks to leave out the parts they don't like the sound of.Ingredients: about 3 tbsp of venison fat(scrape off of the interior of the hide) about 1.5 lbs of venison butt roast, 1 inch cubes about 1 cup wild onion( bulb and about one inch of chive for color) about 1/2 cup green tsuga bud leaves( also known as the hemlock tree, not to be confused with poison hemlock, which is a low shrub), which is a substitute for lemon grass, and has a minty/citrusy flavor and is common in my area two packets of black pepper 8 mre peanut butter packets( roughly 2 cups) 2 mre pasta w/ tomato sauce packets( strained of pasta and veggies, all we need is the sauce) - about 1 cup 4 mre packs of chicken w/ red beans and rice( remove chicken if you want, but isn't really important) if you have some garlic, it is pretty tasty here too.I didn't, so here goes Sauce: In a medium large sauce pan combine the following: half of fat - heat to oil most of the wild onion all of tsuga leaves saute' till onion is clear add tomato sauce, heat to simmer add peanut butter packs one or two at a time, and stir until mixed in completely simmer over med-low heat for about 30 min Do you find this valuable? |

continued:Meat: in a frying pan combine rest of fat heated to oil rest of onion, saute'd till clear venison chunks black pepper cook until venison is well done Rice: heat according to directions Serve meat on a bed of rice, with sauce over the top. Meat and rice can stand alone, but is nowhere near as good. I've made this at hunting camps a couple of times, it get's funny looks at first, but almost everyone who tries it begs me to make it again.(of course, I never made it cobbled together from MREs) Do you find this valuable? |

5 indiv. packs of banana bread flavored instant oatmeal3 cans of Armor chili, no beans 2 cans of Spam 2 cans of boneless, skinless salmon 1 can of Bush's Grilling beans 1 small container of JIF peanut butter I plan on adding some Larabars (I tend to pull those out for big backpacking trips) and some Powerbars of the chocolate variety for on-the-go eating. By way of reference, on a normal day I eat between 2000-2500 calories, all of it is very low carb (the secret to my weight loss!) but when I'm on a weekend backpacking trip where 10+ miles/day are hiked, I eat more like 5000 calories and I eat whatever I want. When you're working hard, you eat A LOT. People should be taking this high level of intense activity into consideration when packing food into your BOB - the first thing you'll notice if you're undereating and bugging out is that your recovery time will be dramatically decreased. Also, please don't litter while you're out there doing training hikes. Somebody else will have to pick it up. Besides, if you're being followed or chased, littering just leaves a nice obvious trail to follow. Do you find this valuable? |
