Top Ten Shotguns of Z-day. Let's Make a List.
Jun 9 2010, 5:19 PM EDT
(Most of this text is borrowed from AHB.)Going along with the "top ten" threads, here is the place to post your favorite shotgun. 1) Afforadability. Could the average Joe who frequents the site afford it? The price cap is $1400. 2) Accuracy. Shotguns aren't known as tackdrivers, but some are more accurate than others. 3) Longevity. Has this shotgun been around long enough to prove itself a contender? Boomsticks "du jour" would have to have proved themselves in an unbiased test. Old dogs that are always ready for the hunt will score higher. 4) Dependibility. Will that sum batch shoot every damn time? Look at the history and reviews of said scattergun. Is it bulletproof or a jam-a-matic? 5) Ease of shooting: Is this gun pleasent and comfortable to shoot, or does it tear your arm off even with the lightest loads? 6) Weight. We will be on the move and every ounce counts for or against us. 7) Spped. Is it a single shot, DB, pump, bolt, or auto? 8) Ammo capacity. Shotguns are notorious for blowing through ammunition, but the more you have in the gun, the better. Unlike the rifle list, I want to make an added rule with this list. IF THERE ARE A TON OF VARIANTS, JUST COVER THE PARENT FIREARM! Example, I don't want to see 6 different Remington 870s on the list. Make sure every firearm posted is unique in its own way. Happy posting. My thoughts beforehand: I'm expecting a lot of support for Mossberg 500s and Remington 870s. 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

WooHoo I am first and I am going with the Mossberg 500. I have had one since 1987. I have hunted everything from squrriel, waterfowl, and turkey, to deer. I have a nice smooth bore 20" barrel on it. I have tried different stocks, but the standard out of the box wood is the best. It is a proven platform used by the military and many different police forces.

ÝRemington 870 for the win. Doesn't hold as much as the Mossberg but arguably the most popular pump shotgun in the world. I would also like to cut off the others and nominate the following: Franchi Spas 12 Benelli M4 Super 90 - Edit: Forgot price cap Saiga 12 Shotgun Do you find this valuable? |

"Remington 870 for the win. Doesn't hold as much as the Mossberg but arguably the most popular pump shotgun in the world.NEF Pardner Pump. Same gun as the 870, just half the cost. I've shot the crap out of mine (a few thousand rounds) and cleaned it 3-4 times. Since we don't want to see variants though, I'll go with the 870. Do you find this valuable? |

Since Cyrano didn't do an outline for the 500, I'll just go ahead and steal his thunder.1) Affordability - The most decked out expensive one I've seen was $400. I got mine used for $250, and it had everything on it that I wanted already. 2) Accuracy - With many barrel, choke, and ammunition options, the accuracy depends on the loadout you want. Personally, I have the 18in non rifled barrel with no choke, so I'm only doing real damage up to 20 yards. A nice long rifled barrel with a slug will show rifle like accuracy in the few hundred yard range. 3) Longevity - They were designed in 1960 and are still in widescale production today. According to Wikipedia, "Mossberg claims the Model 500 is the only shotgun to pass the US Army's Mil-Spec 3443E test, "a brutal and unforgiving torture test with 3,000 rounds of full power 12 gauge buckshot"." Some branches of US military went to the benelli shotgun, but with the low price of the 500, the Army, Navy, and Marines still widely use it. 4) Dependibility - This, like most pump shotguns, are nail drivers. They will take a huge beating and keep going. The wikipedia post for longevity also applies. 5) Ease of Shooting - Shells go in the bottom, pump goes forward and back, trigger goes click. Recoil depends on the load used and gun setup. Having only a pistol grip and an 18in barrel, I can fire 3in 00-buck one handed without much discomfort. 6) Weight - Again it comes down to all the bells and whistles you add or take away. A stock 500 is 7.2lbs empty, but mine is about 6lbs. 7) Pump. It is as fast as you can make it. Its faster in my opinion than a bolt action rifle because you dont have to removed your hands from their shooting positions to rack a new round. 8) Ammo capacity - 5-8 rounds, depending on the model. Mine is a 6+1. Overall, great shotgun. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"I've heard a lot of bad things about this gun. 1. It's banned. 2. According to a lot of people, it jams really easily. Also, the 870 doesn't necessarily have less capacity. Many have extended tubes. Do you find this valuable? |

Remington 870...High quality gun that has been made for over 50 years and has been proved to be very dependable and stand up to hard use.I've hunted in all kinds of weather with one and never had any problems. A very popular gun with hunters and trap shooters and I have never heard anyone that had any problems.Parts and barrels are very common as are after market stuff. Not hard to pick up a nice used 870 for $150 or less I have a 12 ga. one with an extended mag and a 20 inch rifle sighted slug barrel which is threaded for choke tubes and is the perfect all around shotgun for anything from Doves to Bear I have a Mossberg 500 I picked up for $90 and seems to shoot OK. Thin action bars, aluminum reciever and lots of plastic [trigger assembly, safety] keeps me from rating it as high quality as a Remington. Put them side by side and easy to pick out the better made gun. One advantage of the Mosseberg is that extra barrels can be bought very cheap, like $20 I also like Browning A5 and it's Remington copy the model 11 in my experance very dependable semi autos.I shot alot of geese with an A5 and have a short barrel model 11 that is light and handles great and I think would be the perfect home defense gun Do you find this valuable? |

1) Saiga-12 - Cheapest and magazine fed for faster reload.2) Mossberg 930 Roadblocker - Huge muzzle break for sustain fire and semi-auto for the win. Sometimes you can pick one up for a good price in a sale. 3) Benelli M4 Super 90 - It's Benelli, you can't go wrong... :-) Do you find this valuable? |

"Remmington 870, this was the first gun i've ever shot and I loved it the minute it touched my hands."Same here. I love duck hunting with it. Never failed me once and the recoil is really nice. Not too much, but enough to know the round got off without a hitch. I usually shoot 3" BBB, T shot. Everything works great and I love it. Do you find this valuable? |

"I've heard a lot of bad things about this gun. It's not banned at all. Perhaps by states like Kalifornia, but completely legal to own otherwise. As for the jamming issue, I can't say I'm familiar with it. Extended magazine tubes are available, yes. I suppose I'm just so used to handling Mossbergs and the low cap 870's that I disregarded them. Remington 870 all the way. Probably my favorite of all the guns we own.My other favorite, though a little higher up the price range, is the Remington 1100 or 11-87. This gun is bad-the-f**k-a**. Very reliable, and it's an auto loader so when faced with multiple targets, you don't have to take the time to pump the action manually. Nothing's more bada** than a semi-automatic shotgun, Another worth mentioning, one of the most amazing guns I have ever been blessed to shoot, is the Benelli M4 tactical auto loader 12 gauge. Expensive as hell, but it's amazing. Do you find this valuable? |

Since the Remington 870 has been nominated about 4 times and is my personal carry, I will nominate my second choice. ( and my wifes carry while bird hunting)Ithica model 37 Featherlite 12 gauge. Light weight reliable Lots made, was used by police and military for many many years Unfortunately, last I heard, not made anymore; though there was a few rumors thepatterns had been bought by someone.. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. "It's not banned at all. Perhaps by states like Kalifornia, but completely legal to own otherwise. As for the jamming issue, I can't say I'm familiar with it.Really? Oh, I may have made a mistake. Many places say it is banned from import into the US, not banned altogether. If you have one , it's legal. But you can't buy one from Italy or something. My bad. Either way, that cuts down on availability. Also, I understand the popularity of the Remington 870, but I have to ask y'all not to nominate it multiple times. There will be time to vote later. Just to get some more shotguns in the fight...Winchester 1200 T194 USAS12 NS2000 Sorry, had to use video games to get an idea. My shotgun horizon isnt exactly broad. Edit: Apparently the neostead is illegal to market in the US because of the large magazine capacity. Do you find this valuable? |

"Nice. I'm gonna go with the Mossberg 500. Too many things to detail but if you know me & my choice of firearms you know 3 basic things that I like in a weapon. -Ruggedness -Dependability -Ease of use/shooting/reloading, etc... I've said it before, I'm not a Sniper (I wish I was). I'm a CQB sorta guy. Also- It's a pump. One of the simplest designs for a firearm. Keep it Simple... Do you find this valuable? |
