So as my research grinds on, the three islands I have chosen appear to have one stumbling block: the bureaucracy involved in building something like this is quite onerous. The reason is because much of the suitable plots of land are close to National Parkland.Which is making me consider other locations again. Mainland locations scare me, just running the numbers. However, if the map of US population density is any good, I might reconsider building in one of the central states. But really, which of them are good candidates? I figure that since a lot of you live there, you might know. I'm looking for a place that is fairly flat, but a slight incline is preferable. Well water is a must. A remote and isolated place, so nothing near cities. The ability to run power and phone lines would be nice, but that can be done almost anywhere now. Gun laws? As relaxed as possible, but really since I will only be stockpiling semi-auto rifles and plenty of bullets, I don't need anything special such as the right to hoard claymores and dynamite. Taxes? Again, low as possible, but since this is going to be a business rather than a personal purchase, it's the corporation taxes that I would need. Climate? Temperate to tropical, the main thing is rainfall and winter. Just enough rain to grow crops, and a short winter spell to make the growing season long. So where would you build my BOL if you were choosing, and why? Do you find this valuable?

I would think Nebraska, preferably the western portion of the state. Nice and flat, rain fall should be sufficient, Weather shouldn't be too crazy( all of the midwest is tornado country).I'm not too sure about taxes or gun laws, so that will need looking into. Growing season should be pretty similar to here, so 4 months on a bad year, and average of about 4 1/2 to 5. Do you find this valuable? |

I am more familiar with the coasts, I choose PA. I have 30 acres next to a National Forest in the mountains. We have springs for fresh water(coming down the moutains gives enough pressure to plumb your house with no electronics.) The growing season is brief, only one planting. We dont have spring and winter crops. But the game and biodiversity is much better than midwestern and western states. I can go into the second growth forest in my back yard and come back with a bushel basket of edible plants. Gun laws are great, mirror federal laws. no nonsensical state restrictions. CCW as long as you are over 21 and able to purchase a weapon, and pass a background check. If you get to know the local LEOs you can get signed off on anything. I know the local Sheriff and I could buy a freaking mortar and he would sign the papers. I teach in the local school the town has about 1000 people and the school covers the entire county. Population is not an issue.

Wyoming is my actual choice. Loose regulations, good options for renewable energy, low population especially in the NE corner of the state. No Income tax for pre-zday. Montana and South Dakota both have no sales tax so if you are in that NE corner you are within a couple hours drive of sales tax free shopping pre-zday which should really help in making your plan a reality. Land is reasonably cheap I was looking at a plot the other day, 40+ acres for $130,000. I was also checking with a contractor and for an earth sheltered house they are pricing $72 - $75 a sq. ft. for construction of the shell which isn't too bad. For a 3000 sq. ft house that's only about $225,000 which is a pretty decent price compared to other areas in the country. Lots of protected land for recreation pre-zday as well and Yellowstone National park in the NW corner. Do you find this valuable? |

Once I get back to my apartment I'll post up a proposed map of Fallout Drift as well. Wyoming, especially the NE corner is out of the drift :D

I say you ditch Central US and just come to Texas. Heck all of you can come.Lots of open land away from general pop! Gun laws- What are these things!? Climate- There are multiple regions in this state, each presenting you with a different climate. Overall though farms are plentiful in Texas. Taxes-http://www.essortment.com/career/newcomersguide_tvwd.htm Im not going to pretend like im an expert in economics. So there is a link to some info that may help you out. Its a great place to call home and to make your last stand! Do you find this valuable? |

It is Almost Completely Flat, But several Mesas dot the area. There are only a few farmers living out there, and the Big R store there should have plenty of food, weapons, and other supplies. Gun laws in Colorado are very lenient. The only guns you need a licence for are concealed guns, but explosives are completely illegal. Do you find this valuable? |

I would stay out of Colorado, possible nuclear threat (Cheyenne Mountain amongst other military strongholds) and I've heard that it is rather left-wing and if you believe in conspiracy theories major "dark" government elements are based there.
