IMPORTANT: I need your opinions!
Jun 16 2010, 2:10 AM EDT | Post edited: Jun 16 2010, 2:14 AM EDT
As I have been perusing the many categories of The ZSDW I have noticed the many posts on medical gear and procedures. They float around and have no real home in ZSDW and some of them are actually quite helpful.

My proposal; a new category of discussions: Medicine And First Aid.

It could contain posts on interesting ideas for first aid and medicine, during and post Z-day. As well as be used to discuss first aid kits, trauma kits and dealing with injuries, during and post Z-day
However, there are two main differences I think should be included in this type of category to remedy two problems I foresee:

1) The liability. Not so much legal as moral liability, we don't want anyone hurting themselves testing procedures or ideas listed, so the easiest solution would to be to have a warning thread set in Featured Threads.

2) Bogus ideas. A concern if the need ever does arise to test one of these ideas in a survival situation. I think the writers should cite their postings from reliable websites so nobody is tricked into thinking a bogus procedure is legitimate by medical mumbo-jumbo. I am willing to personally help regulate this with the help of moderators since I really do want this category to be a helpful addition to the ZSDW website.

I am making this thread to put the idea the mods and to the rest of the ZSDW population. I hope this is taken seriously as I think it would help add vital information to a long unfilled space in the ZSDW.

Thank you for your time and what are your concerns, questions, ideas or feedback on this topic?

I'm not being mean here, just informative.
This is the kind of thing that should be brought to mods/admins only. If you go to your inbox and compose a new message, you have to put in a "who to send it to" or something like that. The very first choice is "all mods." Send it there.
Or, apply to be a writer. If you have a valid reason (which it seems like you do) they will promote you and you can write it yourself.

Just a couple of tips.

The main reason I didn't want to present it to the Mods right away is I wanted the opinions of everyone on the website. If most people didn't feel it was something the site needed then I felt it wouldn't be something I needed to bother the Mods with. I will take it up with them, however, if you feel that is something that should be brought to the Mods instead. I am a writer as well however I think a forum provides better interface and is visited more often. Do you find this valuable?

I say this A Don. As a nurse I would love to have a page that I could stickly dedicate healthcare tips and even current health events such as new flu strains, vaccines available, and scientific research regarding healthcare...just to say a few :)

Basically im saying if you did build it I sure would post on it. Heck I read this scratched my head and thought "dang I shoulda done this" lol Good Idea!!!

If I were to back up any organizational effort I would like someone in the medical field to do it.

No offense AD but as you say this is important...too important for non-medical trogs like us :)

I don't think it would have to be anyone with a full PHD as field first-aid is far more simple than work in a hospital would be. While we would have to make sure to regulate fact from fiction as best we can.

I agree I'm not the best one to do it, I'm willing to try. In the end though,I think that a collaborative effort between a few people with an above average medical background working together would be able to provide a fairly good opinion on fact or fiction.

Any experience would be better than none.

But how would we know what pages worked and what didn't...unless someone with a medical background clarified?

By having the author of the page cite where they obtained their information from, similar to Wikipedia, we could cut down drastically on the medical myths. While it might discourage some people from posting, at first or at all,we have nurses and other medial personnel that I'm sure would be glad to share interesting tips with the rest of us.

In addition this category could be used to discuss where to obtain, care for and when to use certain basic medical supplies, as well as how to fabricate them once factory first aid items run out. That's why I chose the name "Medicine and First Aid" in stead of "Medicine Post Z-day" or something similar.

I acknowledge not everyone has a medical background, but there are a huge variety of accidents that can happen as well a huge variety of solutions that can be improvised or thought of. This forum can be used to ask the more experienced about whether or not they think an idea would work as well.

Agreed, this also isn't something that will happen overnight, I still need to hear back from the Mods about their thoughts on the idea. Who knows this may not even happen. I just figured I would put the idea out there and see what we as a site can do.

MrManClub says he is a nurse and I have no reason to doubt him at this point. In addition to me and him we have a surprising amount of first-aid and health care buffs on this site, all of whom are welcome to contribute.

I study human physiology when I can, I started because my father was a licensed MD, and while I've never wanted to be a doctor, the subject has always interested me. I have taken various field and emergency first aid courses where I live, and read up on the subject as much as I can fro reliable sources. While I might not be an expert, I am fairly sure I will be able to deal with nearly anything that may arise in a survival situation.

We might not be ready for open heart surgery, but I feel our current group can provide at least some useful information and discussion on the topic. It will be up to everyone to regulate the posts and call bull**** when they see it, not that it doesn't happen as it is.

I already answered Via PM. I'd be all for it.

Just a bit of advice already mentioned via PM: Big Fat letters stating

"The best course of action is to take yourself to a Hospital & be treated by Medical Professionals. This Page Is For Information Purposes Only." Or something like that.

That would save your hide from being procecuted by Some Noob trying to suture himself with Mom's Thread & Needle used for Crochetting..

Yeah, I have been working on drafting a warning of sorts that covers this type of tomfoolery... I think Wetpaint already has warning in the TOS but it never hurts to double up... Do you find this valuable?

I would love a dedicated page to field medical procedures and first aid. Please make sure to cover everything? Do you find this valuable?
