Has anyone here played the new Red Faction game? No? Well, for the purposes of this thread, I'm just going to tell you about the brutal Gutter melee weapon from the game.

The Gutter is found from the scavenger Marauder tribe/clan/whatever. It consists of a wooden or metal rod with 4 blades, a spearhead, and a partail spiked mace attached. In the game, the Gutter is a very powerful weapon with 1-hit-kill capabilities.

So, after playing the game for a couple of hours, I thought about this weapon's capibilities as a zombie survival melee tool in real life. The blades looked easy enough to create from sheet metal, the spikes could be made from nails, the spear head looked wooden, and the only other materials could be wood, PVC pipe, and some sort of metal clamp (se the screenshots)

Look at the screenshots I'm about to link and discuss this weapon's use as a melee weapon in a ZAS.

Theory of Operation:
The dominant hand holds the weapon near the blade.
Strikes:
+ The attacker makes a diagonal cleave to the victim’s neck
+ The attacker dashes forward and stabs the victim
+ The attacker slides their non-dominant hand up the shaft and brings the spikes down on the head of the victim, followed by the blades
+ The attacker lifts the weapon to their shoulder (ala a classic RPG) and thrusts forward with it, stabbing the victim’s skull with the spikes

(The “victim,” of course, is a zombie.)

The game has it set up to look primitive, so it obviously looks really flimsy.

With all those erratic angles and minimal support for the blades, I would imagine the tensile strength of the entire weapon is very poor.

Melee is meant to be close up, and that thing looks way to clumsy to use in any tight spaces.

Really a neat looking weapon, but practicality is way out the window. If you want a REAL badass weapon, go for Thunderfury (OLD school WoW players will appreciate this)

Well, the Gutter definitely LOOKS more badass.

It doesn't need to be a perfect copy. We could drop some weight here and there, shorten the handle, and make the blades out of heavy-duty steel or iron (I forgot to mention that in the game they look like tinfoil XD).

Maybe making the blades a bit more streamlined and having a less square shape would do some good.

EDIT: And if you look really closely while playing, the blades are actually held on by miniature vice-ish things welded to the shaft and bolted on. So there's some nice support for ya. Do you find this valuable?

Cool a fellow WoW player.
Unfortunately either of them would be to heavy to cary for a long time and to big to use in doors so it has very limited use, just stick with a machete. Do you find this valuable?
