How long before it's safe to scavenge?
Jun 23 2010, 10:08 PM EDT | Post edited: Jun 23 2010, 10:08 PM EDT
As shown the The Panic, stores and similar places will be backed with people following the outbreak.

Therefore, I pose the question: How long would you wait before venturing out to scavenge? Two weeks, a month?

Just curious. Thanks.

If I was planning on scavenging, I'd do it after all the people running around in the streets are dead or dying, and I've fortified my house. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

if you had to scaveng post z-day then i would wait until you no longer see any activity outside of your fortified location. less activity means less chance of problems. Do you find this valuable?

provided that my supplies hold out, I'd try to wait until no one was visible within two or three miles of my location. I guessed I'd send out small scout teams (2-3) the check out the area, then larger groups (5-7) to do the actual scavenging.

It would really suck to get a great haul from a house/ store only to have your scav team ambushed by another group because you didn't check the surrounding area first.

In my particular area, I guess that time would be somewhere around a month. It isn't heavily populated, but I do live near a relatively large population center (for my state), so it might take a while for everybody to clear out, group up, or die.

Personally I was thinking that I would go out basically as soon as there was no one visible in my immediate area. I really don't like the idea of going for supplies to find that my place has been raided by people who saw me leave.

This of course means that I would be doubling back rather shortly and heading at first only within line of sight of my place at first

To be sure that there are few to no people around? Three days. Zombies? Spin the bloody wheel. Could be a month, could be a year, could be a decade.

The risks you are going to take ultimately depend on your preparation beforehand, and your desperation to find some specific items. If you are just going "shopping", then you will likely be very cautious, putting off until tomorrow what seems even the slightest bit dicey today.

Yeah, sorry, I meant people.

And of course you would DN...

I was thinking about waiting three or dour days. That'd give time for most of the looters to either leave or die.

How long before its safe to do anything?

I would be out trading and barganing before I ever considered scavenging. I'd be hitting up neighbors for livestock that day. A family of four will not need all 300 head of dairy cows when electricity is hard to come by. Someone with a 5000 hen laying house will not need all those eggs laying around rotting. Someone with a 500 head sow floor will not need every piglet for their small family.

I have items to trade for these things and for the most part my neighbors would share without even trading. In the country things have changed. Large factory farms that rely on feed being trucked in would be happy to share their livestock with people they know because they can't eat all that stock themselves or feed them all for that matter.

With my hand crank feed grinder (hammermill) a winters supply of food is just the nearest grain bin away.

Personally I'm going to wait 2 to 4 days, living of MREs in the house. Then I will start scavving. Do you find this valuable?

If I'm buggin-in...I'll wait for as long as I have to before venturing out to scavenge. Obviously you shouldn't wait until you are desperate for supplies...but if you are running dangerously low on the essentials...then you gotta do what you gotta do.

If I'm buggin-out...then I will scavenge and trade along the way. Every locatio is raidable when you have guns and they don't...and most people here (in Canada) don't. I will siphon fuel and collect car batteries from all abandoned vehicles. "Food" will be shot on sight.

Agreed. As soon as it becomes a rarity to see a living breathing human walking the streets, I will start scavenging.

A BOB is only meant to last around 72 hours. It is assumed that by that time you will be able to find other sources of food and water.

Fair enough.

I just know that, during the first few days, s*it will be flying everywhere. I don't wanna get stabbed in the street by some guy who wants all my food.
Therefore, I'mma be sittin' in my house the first few days.

Personally I would wait until Just after the panic has ended, and scout around my area a bit, then go scavaging for things. hopefully I won't get raided, or I should just leave everybody in teams of 2? Do you find this valuable?

I would only start scavenging after the risk of seeing other humans or zombies are low. I would also start scavenging after my BOL is fortified and a team of no less than three is guarding my BOL. At that point most people would agree that it is safe to scavenge. Now, since every situation is different, I can't really put a specific (or even general) time that the above criteria could be met. Since I do not have the fortunate situation as Timberrattler, I expect to be in place for some time.
I expect a segment of the population to attempt forced entry.
I expect a segment to raid/slaughter my neighbors
There will be a horrid stench surrounding my immediate area from all of those 'attemptees' until I collect and dispose of them

As long as the power remains on, my normal 6-month supply of standard food will sustain.
The 'quicker' staples such as milk, eggs, butter, cold cuts, ets will deplete w/in a week or 2
For all I know, I may not have to go anywhere as I may become the local warlord , those who pass by must offer tribute or face my wrath.

Depends all where you live. If you are in the city, maybe a week+, in the country, as long as you see no one in the immediate vicinity, small cities/suburbs/towns, until you see no living thing on your street, within your immedita vicinity, and till everything is nice and quiet.
