Melee Weapons
Jul 6 2010, 1:25 PM EDT | Post edited: Jul 6 2010, 1:25 PM EDT
Having last resort weapons or if you have no gun is important.
Either way I think having a.) a Knife and b.) a blunt or bladed object (that can cause real damage) is important. Why? Because A small Knife can be used for a variety of things outside the realm of violence, you can cut rope, cut food, open cans, cut clothing, etc. And obviously a larger object (probably a blunt one) would be more useful with beating brains out.
Agree, disagree?
Also what types of knifes and blunt/bladed objects would YOU prefer?
I would probably use my brothers baseball bat, but I don't know much about knifes so maybe you guys can help me with that.
Do you find this valuable?

I don't know about using my combat knife for other things. if it has traces of zombie still on it at any time I use it for cooking and cleaning, there are huge contamination risks, if not for zombification, then for normal diseases. dead bodyies carry a lot of disease, after all.

What you don't butter your bread with the same knife you killed something with? What's wrong with ya? You don't have the Howie Mandel syndrome do ya? LOL

Combat knives are for combat...not for opening cans. They can be used for other things like cutting wood or rope and whatnot...but not for food prep.

Some larger tools can be just as useful if not more useful than smaller ones.

Namely, the machete. If can do everything a knife can do, plus a little more, pending it is a quality machete.

My melee weapon of choice is the crow bar because it will come in very handy when for instance shifting large objects, removing the planks from boarded up windows or forcing open doors. All of these would be very useful when scavenging and raiding abandoned houses. It could also be used as a blunt weapon and I think I could brain a zombie easily with one of these. If i could find a good one i might also use a war hammer or trench spike because booth of these where specifically designed to break through helmets which means they would make easy work of a zombie skull. So are you saying my frying pan is a poor choice of a zed slaying tool? I mean, I can just crunch the zombie's skull, put it's brain in the pan and throw it on the fire before I make my hamburgers. ;)

I wouldn't do that. That form of cannibalism is how Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease is spread.

For those who don't know, that is a human strand of mad cow disease.

"That right there sound's a bit to much like the z-guide!

"
Nope. Here's what Brooks says about crowbars (quote from my Guide copy) -

"The best bludgeon is a steel crowbar. It is relatively lightweight and durable construction makes it ideal for prolonged close combat. Its curved, semi-sharpened edge also allows for a stabbing motion through the eye socket, directly into the brain case. More than one survivor has reported killing zombies in this manner. Another benefit of the crowbar is that it may be necessary to pry open a door, shift a heavy object, or perform other tasks for which it was originally designed. None of these functions can be accomplished with [other items]..."

Now to my response:
Knives should be used for combat/utility (such as stabbing zeds and cutting rope), ONLY combat/utility or cooking, ONLY cooking. I myself have multiple knives in my kitchen for cooking and a machete-type item (lawnmower blade PLUS a machete I bought the other day).

Blunt objects - most will break easily or not deliver enough power. Baseball bats splinter and beak. Police batons aren't lethal in one shot (from wikipedia, not the guide). Mine would probably be a splitting maul, it's a semisharpened axe head that's really heavy. I wouldn't take it on the run though.

Non-serrated ice picks.
like a trench knife with the added benefit of centrifugal force that a longer handle provides. Basically a trench knife mounted on a stick at a 90 degree angle.

I like to occasionally make clubs out of oak. One I made about 3' 6'' out of a branch that I cut down. I striped the bark, sanded a handle, put a spike on the end just in case, put large-headed nails in the end, laquered it, and wrapped some leather around the handle.

I plan on some day buying a nice Cold Steel Katana and taking up some form of martial arts.

Cold steel Katanas are fine...but look into a few Paul Chen Swords. They range in price from fairly cheep (maybe $300) to very expensive.

I'd also recommend getting into a kendo class if possible.

Hm, I'll check those out. I'm just a moneyless kid so price is a factor.

Thats the exact class I was thinking of taking. The closest class is about a 30 minute drive from my house though, since I live in BFE.

I'm definately going to look into it. Figured it'd be a fun hobby to do over the summer, since I've had absolutely nothing to do.

This is where I buy all of my blades from.

They have some very nice Katana ranging in price.

Cold Steel has a "Katana Machete." It just looks like an over sized G.I. Tanto. Looks like it might make a good beat up knife. Just something I thought you might be interested in.

Why not just get a Ninja-to or a Wakazashi then?

This just seems like a poor mans "katana." The Ninja-to or a Wakazashi would probably be better. This is just one of Cold Steel's gimmicky items.
