Childrens' BOB's

I just wanted to say good job on this page Kinelta. Right now I carry my toddler's things in my BOB. He has a backpack that he'll wear for 5 minutes, but then he gets annoyed by it and takes it off. I guess I should carry an empty back pack for him in my BOB anyway. It's really hard having to think about not being there to take care of your children, which makes this all the more impressive. I literally just walked back into the house with my new son (Jaxon Peter, born 07-14-2010 at 1620 hours) and settled in. The hospital had blocked ZSDW for some unknown reason, but I actually started compilling a list of what I wanted to get packed in a BOB for the little guy and you are pretty much spot on from the list I have. I also added Similac (personal choice) to the list and a hat for him. He's also got a small container for meds and vaseline and baby powder. Oh, and I also found a stainless nalgene at Baby's R Us a few weeks back that I snagged and will put into it :)

Very nice write up!

Indeed, it's a great page. I like the pictures, and your choices are all excellent. Each child is ready to rock and roll with these bug out bags. The bags aren't too heavy, and there's enough supplies that if an "on foot" is required, they've got all the gear they'll need.

I also like the food choices - as a meal, it's got an appropriate carbs/fat/protein ratio for a person who is exerting large amounts of energy. It will provide enough "instant go" from the applesauce and longer term energy from the crackers and tuna. I think that it might be beneficial to double up the amount of food they're carrying, and possibly add one or two "grab and go" sort of snack to each bag. There are a lot to pick from, but I suggest an nutrition bar called a "Larabar." They're 100% natural, gluten/soy/dairy free, vegan friendly, packed with calories and has a healthy carbs/protein/fat ratio. They are relatively low GI (Glycemic Index) as well. They also taste very good, though some flavors are better than others. My favorites are banana bread and pecan pie, but I've never tried one that I didn't enjoy - though your kids might be pickier than I am.

Other than that, I think the bug out bags are perfect. Great work Kinelta!

Thanks guys!

I'm trying to figure out what to do with the three year old though. He gets tired of it and of his scooter, and then he wants to be carried. I've got a stroller, but I'm thinking I'll have to invest in a jogging double seater. (groan)

I've had those Larabars before, and they were good. I'm thinking of switiching out the applesauce, but it's what was on hand when I put these together.

Congratulations on the new baby, Unassigned!

edit: I hope you will all ignore the mis-punctuation on the title. I was typing with a baby on the lap at the time.

You should make a small BOB for children, but it is also important to teach the children how to use and when to use every thing in it.

When my boys were small, I would take them campint and hiking and have them carry their own packs. I tought them to make fires, filter water, to find edible vegitation, along with hunting and fishing.

Now that their both in college in Western Michigan University (future vetrenarian), and Noter Dame (future emergency room doctor), I know if any major survival situation happens they can take care of themselves and others.

Start teaching them young and the knowledge will stay with them the rest of their lives.

Congrats Unassingned when my daughter was born was one of the best days of my life.
As always great work Kinelta, your children are quite lucky to have a mother so considerate and forethoughtful.

Excellent page kinelta! Spot on with your choices. I've learned a thing or two from this page and hope to get my kids backpacks filled with all your wonderful choices. Good work! Do you find this valuable?

Excellent page, Kinelta. Having watched me preparing my own BOB, my nine year old wants me to prepare one for her too. I was at a bit of a loss as to what to put in it that would be age appropriate until I stumbled across this page.

I have added a link to this information on my Survival Gear Page. Again, excellent job.

Fantastic work, Kinelta. Since beginning to plan, I've realized that my family is nowhere near prepared for -anything- to happen, so I've been considering putting together a BOB for my sister once my own is complete. She's twelve, so I'll have to modify the list for hers a bit, but this definitely gives me a good starting point. Do you find this valuable?
