What's a decent far range weapon for a petite female?
Jul 23 2010, 1:30 PM EDT | Post edited: Jul 23 2010, 1:30 PM EDT
I'm pretty strong (just small) and I have had experience with hand guns and pistol crossbows, but I needed some expertise advice on what would be a good semi light-weight weapon for me shooting from a distance. I have a framed child carrier that I would be wearing with my toddler in it, so weight is important to me. Weapons with scopes on them are awesome because I'm a good sniper, but on the go, they aren't the more efficient... Hrmm

I'd say a Savage lightweight varminter in .204.

The .204 Ruger round is a very flat shooting, very accurate round. Best of all unlike a .223 you will have so little recoil that you will not have to readjust from shot to shot.

There are guys who would call that a wimpy round but this little bullet is pulling 4000 fps. Use JHPs and it will get the job done admirably on head shots.

If you weren't interested in making the long shots and was thinking more along the 100 yrd range a Marlin 1894C would probably fit you well. Its a lightweight rifle that'll hold 10 rnds. Lever action and pretty much idiot proof as far as maintence. If I were you I'd get one chambered for .357 and use .38s. Almost no recoil and more than enough to ruin Zach's day.

Well, a .223 rifle will do a lot of things. You can get a nice bolt-action mini Mauser, or a Ruger Mini, an AR, plenty of options in terms of low recoil.

That said, a lot of perceived recoil is a matter of ergonomics, and proper shooting stance and grip. A pistol with too thin of a grip, or a rifle with a thin stockpad, too long of a stock, will intensify recoil. Having a proper stance will transfer recoil better and allow for quicker follow ups. That stuff is pretty universal.

What is your price range?

Options on the cheap include the Kal Tec Sub 2000, Ruger Mini 14, WASR 10, Narinco MAK 90, and so on. Personally, my wife is very petite and 5'1'' and she can handle a fair amount of recoil. She likes the Kal Tec design and also the WASR.

If money isn't an issue then there are many other options available to you.

thanks for the feedback! i'm going to have to do some studying... my price range is pretty low (stay home mom) whats a good weapon book out there?
and about the Xbows... they're considered a great silent killer but how reliable are they? I'd be fearful of bad craftsmanship that allows it to warp and bend

I would reccomend one other, and this depends on what you feel is a long range shot.
My wife is 5 foot even and lightly built.
For carry in the impending doom. I have her set up with an M-1 carbine.
The cartridge is in the power range of a hot magnum pistol round and will get the job done out to around 150-200 yards.
Beyond that range, my opinion is, disingage and leave valor for another day.
It is light, and the ammo being small means you can pack more of it.
I am not sure what going prices are right now for one though.

I'm buying my girlfriend a Beretta PX4 Storm SubCompact for Christmas. It is probably my favorite subcompact 9mm on the market right now, and I think u can pick one up on gunbroker for around $450.

AK-47 variants such as the WASR-10 are designed to be shot my people wearing body armor, which in turn comes a gun with a naturally short stock. I actually had to buy a telescopic stock so it would fit my larger frame better. The problem with this is 7.62x39mm has a lot of recoil for a little person. They make .223 models of the AK-47 which sound right up your alley. This is the WASR-3.

I just picked up "Boston's Gun Bible". Only had a chance to thumb through so far, but lots of good info on battle rifles.

The least expensive idea that I can think of is a High Point 9mm or .40 S&W. There inexpensive a couple of hundred dollars, and can reach out to over 100 yards.

I would also suggest a good 20 gauge pump or auto shot gun. They are inexpensive, easy to learn and handle, and useful for many purposes.

How far do you really need to shoot?
If a zombie is over...I dunno, 200 yards away, it really doesn't pose a threat or anything. So why really bother?

I would suggest either a Ruger Mini-14 or a Marlin 336. They are both relatively lightweight guns with plenty of accuracy and power. Plus, I've seen small women handle both of them with no problems whatsoever.

Also, if you're looking for a REALLY lightweight gun, they make the tiny youth .22 bolt-actions.

Hell, I'm a little jealous. Lol.

Nobody's buying me a gun for Christmas.... *tear*

If recoil bothers you, try going out and fireing a few big guns, like a super mag 12 gauge. Haha. Worked for me, I think I lost feeling in my shoulder because recoil hardly bothers me, and I'm just a little guy at 5'6" and 115lbs.

If price is a factor, try maybe an SKS in 7.62x39, or maybe an AK-47 variant if you can pull together a little more cash. Recoil's a little hard, but manageable.

I would suggest a light weight AR....Weighs about the same as a pistol calber carbine some have suggested yet is lots more powerful and more accurate at longer range.....A low powered scope adds some weight and cost but you may find it more helpful

If you are thinking about a crossbow you are not thinking about a very long range weapon, instead of it I think a .22 rifle like a Ruger 10/22 would be a better choice. While it doesn't have the power or range as an AR I think a good point could be made for even picking the 10/22 over the AR due to the ammo being much lighter and your ability to carry more as well as being easier to stock up on it in large amounts
I think an Ruger 10/22 with a good scope on it would be deadly out to 125 yds on human targets under ideal condition

I have more then a couple guns but I think if I had to bug out on foot and thought I would be on foot for a long time I'd take a .22 rifle

Lilith, please define the following:

shooting from a distance (is this 100 yds, 400 yrds, ?)

semi-light weight (is this 5 lbs, 7 lbs or less?) for just the gun, not the ammo

nearly all modern weapons can be scoped (handguns, shotguns, rifles, bows) so it comes down to scope only, scope & iron sights, iron sights only. Also, the power level of the scope.

will you be traveling by foot alone, all the time?

The answers will assist scoping the problem and solution here.

You indicate that you are a 'good sniper' so does that mean you have shooting experience and perhaps a caliber preference?

Okie doke... I'm bad on long measurements so I'm going to say like four sedan sized cars away...
Anything 80lbs and lower I can deal with. Already carrying 30lbs on my back, so anything higher could mess up my balance.
I'm really new to the weaponry thing (other than Xbow and handgun) so I appreciate the specifications. I need to learn a load more before trekking out to buy one.
I plan on staying in one place until compromised or if supplies are getting low, so not too often, but perhaps to protect the perimeter of our location.
I've used scope before on crossbows and have been dead accurate, but I've really had no experience with rifles and such, so I suppose "good sniper" was a bad term.
I've been doing research and for my price range, something along the lines of Ruger mini 14 or in the same family would seem more relevant to my needs. Do silencers actually do anything btw?

For a 5.56x45mm round, no.

Mini 14's are great rifles. With one of them, you can hit something from way more than four sedan sized cars away. Lol. I think it would suit you nicely.

I started to write a REALLY long answer to this earlier today, but was cut short by a trip to the swimming pool...

Personally, my opinion is that you need to tailor the cartridge to what you plan on doing with it. Both 5.56 or 7.62x39 are great if you're expecting to have to fight your way out of town, but in my opinion, they're both totally insufficient for medium or medium-large game harvesting. .243, 25-06, .270 are all better for "long range precision/sniper-like" work, if you want me to be honest.

However, let me make it clear that size doesn't necessarily mean recoil sensitivity - I used to date a gal that could hang with the best of us. She lived for big recoil; though she's the exception, not the rule.
