Basements?
Jul 25 2010, 4:05 PM EDT | Post edited: Jul 25 2010, 4:05 PM EDT
Many houses have basements. When the power goes out, so does your sump pump. Without a pump, any rain water WILL back up and flood your basement.

My question is, how many of you have prepared and thought about this? Are you currently prepared to deal with this?

"we've got a back up drain that runs out of the house"
Most drains though use a sump pump to push the water out of the house.
I assume yours is like that.

on top of the pump we have drains on the floor of the basement that lead into the well under our house, those are the drains I'm talking about, the worst that we've had is a 1/2 inch of water but that went away before the pump was even fixed. I'm sure most people don't have these though because our house is old :-/

Plenty of old (as in hundreds of years) houses in the UK have cellars and basements. They don't use pumps of any kind. Do you find this valuable?

I guess your lucky then. When a major storm knocked out all the power in my town, everyone who didn't have a generator had to deal with a flooded basement.

Unfortunately, a lot of houses do not use a system like yours. I just thought it would be a good thing for a lot of people to consider (if they are using their house as a BOL).

Well my basement.... Oh wait, in Southern Texas we cant have basements because the water table is too high.

A decent basement around here might cost as much as the house itself.

My mother's place is maybe 15 years old and it doesn't use a pump it's all gravity based, drains downhill. In her neighborhood she is up on a hill so she's above the sewage. So some new houses might not use pumps as well.

If you can figure it out call a contractor out to get a free quote on getting a bathroom put into the basement, they should be able to tell you whether you are using a pump or just normal drainage and it's free :)

Pfft, I don't have a basement, not that I know of anyway. Just an attic, that I have never been into.
anyway, what uses does a basement have, apart from the obvious?

Well if the gov't decides to go off the deep end and nuke everything, it will provide basic radiation protection.

In the current world basements are a whole addition to a house. They are a storage area and a play area.

I just made this thread to warn people about flooded basements possibly causing a house to become overrun with mold and other problems.

I wouldn't use my own basement because it's dingy and it would totally flood. =O_O= My best friend lives about a mile (taking shortcuts) away from me though and his basement would be a great place to sleep in. There's a nice crawlspace that could never be broken into by zombies. =^_^= it would simply be a pain to wake up and have to deal with them if they had gotten into the house during the night. =*_*=

We'd spray the glass with black paint though to make it less noticeable that we were hiding out in the house itself then park vehicles around the one easily accessed glass area so it would be even less likely that they would get in and meet us when we opened the hatch in the morning. =^_^=

If I remember correctly you need about 8' of earth in all directions before its completely safe. I could be wrong, but its something to think about...

*ahem* remember the color of night. if you painted the whole hous navy blue, the zombies couldn't see it(maybe you should also line the outside with nails so they'll slowly kill themselves off. that would be hilarious. :D)

I could imagine in the middle of the night hearing a thump as a zombie walks into the wall. "There goes another one!".
