Bulk Ammunition?
Jul 25 2010, 5:21 PM EDT | Post edited: Jul 25 2010, 5:21 PM EDT
In preparation For Z day, how Much Ammunition do you think we should have stockpiled? If it has to do with types of guns, I have a 30 ought 6 Mannlicher schoenauer That my dad gave to me. (My family Has more Guns, But my 30 ought 6 is the rifle I'm most comfortable with.)

p.s I'm new to the site and i look forward to My time here.

There's no such thing as too much ammo! If you plan to stay at your house, or own property where you plan to relocate to after Zday I'd stockpile as much as I can afford. (I know people who go so far as to bury ammunition on their property).

The only problem is, good ammunition tends to be pricey.

you know what it's a really hard question to answer because you'll never know how much you'll need.

I guess it depends on what you're doing. If you're stockpiling for a fort, then I'd say, 1000-5000 rounds, if on foot, 100-300 rounds.

on top of that there's the weight restrictions when on foot so it would be less to carry with 30 ought 6 than it would with .22 rounds of course.

plus it'll ring you up a pretty penny. if you're going for the fort approach, I highly suggest you try out making you're own ammunition as it is cheaper and will help you last longer in the coming apocalypse. check out the Zombie Survival youtube channel for an idea as to how it works

edit: yeah 2WheeledSpeed is right, there's never too much ammo for a fort!

that's wrong if i had a fort to stock i wouldn't put any less that 10,000 rounds of ammo in it and reloading supplies

30-06 rifle rounds tend to be anywhere from 12 bucks (CHEAP ammo) to over 20 bucks for a box of 20.

Do the math and see how much it would cost you to get 100,000 rounds of that stuff, even if you were buying in bulk.

well, you could do what uncle does, he take brass from the range and reloads it its a lot cheaper

EDIT@ 2wheels your store it up over time, and thats 10,000 in total half of that could be .22lr which is .04$ a pop, basically, you buy more than you use and if you reload the ammo you use on top of that it can add up.

well you'll do what you wanna do man, but the way I look at it is this, during Z-day I don't see myself as a person killing 100,000 Zeds, let alone the small group I'll be with. so I'd probably be satisfied with 10,000 rounds at the most.

From the place I get my ammo, It's normally about $15 for a box of 20. So It would be about $75000. But i get what he's saying. It's good to have As large an amount of ammunition as possible, and You can stockpile it over time.

F@%K! i totally forgot about raiders and hunting. and yeah I totally thought you were serious about the 100,000.

now that you mention raiders and hunting though- 20,000 rounds sounds nicer to me personally

The amount of ammo you *need* is directly proportional to the expected level of threat you expect. Double that amount and factor in 5 yrs +.

So, if your local area is 10000 people pre-Z Day, expect about 3000 zeds out of that times over 5 yrs (from other areas) for 15,000.
Just an example.

i would recommend that you get another rifle that uses less expensive amunition that you can buy in bulk. rifles that shoot military cartridges are normally the least expensive when buying in bulk. 7.62x39, .223, 5.45x39, and .308 are all good choices.

I can't wait to buy myself a rifle chambered in 5.56 just for that reason, cause I figure... Not only is it cheap to buy now, but what's easier to find in post-apocalyptic America than 5.56? Cops use it, the military uses it, and everyone and their mother seems to have an AR15 variant or 2 lying around somewhere.

I myself haven't thought of this before... but what if you manage to make an outpost from a ammo/gun factory? and get it up and running... would that be too much trouble?

And is it possible to gather ammo from scratch? Seeing as I won't be able to stock up somewhere, the only way for me to get ammo is finding it!

Hunting will be possible without ammo though, I'm mainly worried about defensive purposes.

Right now it's pretty easy to pick up 30 06 fairly reasonable. I recently sold on gunbroker 400 rds of US surplus for about $150, I got it at an auction for a third of that
I have around 2,000 rds of military 30 06 and maybe another 500-600 rds of commercial stuff. The commercial is mostly stuff I picked up a box or two at flea markets, yard sales , auctions etc....Don't think I ever paid more then $5 a box for any of it and often less....Couldn't imagine going in a gun shop and paying $20 a box!

For a main rifle I would want at least 1,000 rds

I think everyone should have a .22 with at least 5,000 rds ...

My goal for on foot B.O.B. ammunition bulk is 500 rounds for .223 and 300 rounds for .45 ACP. I'm hoping it will fit in the rest of my assault pack Do you find this valuable?

300 rounds of 45 ACP is HEAVY. I just bought 500 rounds of it and it weighs ALOT. Also remember 45 is a pistol round for a sidearm its your back-up weapon. 45 is also heavier than 223. 223 can also be used for hunting 45 dosn't have much range. So I'd say carry 3 times your Magazine load of 45 and what ever you feel you can carry in 223 keeping in mind that you will also have Food, Water, Clothes and other survival gear also weighing you down. If you carry 500 .223 and 300 .45 ACP you will be exhausted after a mile. Remember you don't need to kill every Zed you see your should be defending and running. The goal is survival. The standard combat load for the Army is 210 rounds of rifle in 7 Mags and 45 9MM in 3 mags for your pistol (if you have one) I carried 290 rounds of 5.56MM(.223) in 9 30 round mags and one 20 round mag for my M-16 and 60 rounds of 9MM in 4 mags for my M9 pistol while I was in Iraq. Sorry this is my first post this was the first topic I felt I had an experiance in posting on 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?
