Allot of you have plans if Z-DAY comes, allot of them need cars, so if the car wont start, what then?

My plan, there is a place about 2 min walk from where i live, with horses. i would steal them.

How long were you planning on traveling with a horse?
Do you know how to take care of one? what does it eat, how much rest, other things?
Do you have experiance riding horses?

also, are you prepared for a painful bum, and painful legs?

In Holland, almost ever-... EVERY house has at least 1 bike.
Living in a rather populated area is a blessing and a curse, I can find cars anywhere.
But mostly, I'd prefer to walk, I'm very light on my feet, silent and agile while on foot.

If you really do some digging into the plans of most of the REALLY serious people on this site. You will see that most every one of them has at least one backup plan, for just that instance when the primary plan takes a hard left on them and leaves them hanging in the breeze.

It is always wise to have more than one plan ready and in place.

My car doesn't start? I put my backpack on, shoulder my rifle, tighten my laces and start hoofing it to my BOL. It takes about 1.5 hours to drive to, which equates to about 4 days on foot if I bust ass and don't have any problems. Do you find this valuable?

Same here! My BOL is about 45 minutes away so going by your measures that would be 2 days on foot. My bag can get me through 3 days easy...Tell you the truth the terrain on the way there is heavily wooded on the sides of the highway. Traveling by foot in the cover of the timber could be better than driving down an open 2 lane road.

That depends, I plan on using a relatively common vehicle. I have a pretty decent set of tools I'd have in the car with me, and some professional automotive training.

Chances are, if it's a minor issue I can fix it. If it's a major issue and I can scrounge the parts from nearby cars or buildings (I live in a relatively well populated area), I might be able to fix it, it really depends. I'll already have radiator hoses, tire patches, extra battery, fluids etc. It all depends on what the problem is and how much time I have.

If not? Steal another car, or just throw on my backpack and walk on out.

One could salvage a car from a neighbor. Just find one that went Zed and take the keys. Hey look there I just got the Audi I always wanted!

Yea I know it goes against the whole being prepared so you dont have to steal/kill/ or be evil but if something throws a kink in your plans you gotta adapt.

the ****** thing is you could get killed looking for his car keys with the same zombie neighbor coming up from behind you and biting your neck off. whereas in the dark they might not see you and as long as your quiet you can take your time.

"Well if you can't pay attention and stay alert then you have failed already."
AMEN!

Its a risk you gotta take. Search the home before you look for the keys. If your truly alone you will have nothing to worry about. If im takin his keys it will be because he is dead, and in that case he wont need his canned goods or bottled water....PREACH!!!

I for one do not want to go ninja in the dark where I can't see my hand in front of my face if its cloudy or there's a new moon. Give me daylight where I can see whats going on. Darkness works both ways.

"My BOL is about a hour and a half drive. 4 day's, means pack for a week on foot. Hike on out."
Mind you, it's four-five days if you travel ~20 miles each day. That means maintaining a 2 mile per hour speed (not slow, not fast) for ten hours each day for four days. You could add an hour and take two 30 minute breaks. Mind you, this isn't taking into consideration the weather, blisters, bathroom breaks, zombie encounters en route, raiders, crazy folks, injuries sustained from hiking, and a whole slew of other unnameables.

That's why I do the "lightweight" BOB thing. My pack full loaded weighs in at around 25 pounds, carries 4 days worth of food and I'm in pretty decent shape. Most of my gear weight is water - I can carry just shy of 2 gallons on my person. Add on 17 pounds for weapons and ammo. I can move at a reasonable pace all day long. If you've got a 90 pound backpack, plus weapons and ammunition, you're going to be hard pressed to do a similar hike...

In fact, I'm tempted to write up an article highlighting my BOB, why I go the lightweight route, and why I think it's silly to pack a backpack that weighs in at more than 40 pounds...
