$10 x 12 Survival Kit Challenge
Jul 31 2010, 9:02 AM EDT | Post edited: Jul 31 2010, 9:02 AM EDT
We will take EACH MONTH of the year and use a budget of $10 PER MONTH to buy gear for our kit. We will be discussing these items during the month. The discussion will focus on the items AT HAND and how to use them OR to help find alternatives to that month's purchases.

I hope you'll join me in this ONE YEAR workshop.

Great idea! I like it ironhand.

So many times this site concentrates way too heavily on the firearms end of things. This challenge is for everybody. Everyone should be able to participate.

So often I see folks who have set thier eyes on the best assault rifle that they either can't own because of where they live, can't own because they aren't old enough yet or they can't afford because of limited finances.

This is the perfect challenge for everyone who doesn't have thier BOB fleshed out or someone who is looking for a template to go off of. Even an ol' tightwad like me can spare $10 a month and I'm always looking to learn a thing or two.

I hope everyone takes advantage of this. I know I will.

I think I'll be joining you. I think my kids will be, too. I want them to learn how to use my things properly.

Looking forward to it!

Gives us the oportunity to bring up less expensive alternatives or everyday substitutes to some survival gear that a lot of poeple wouldnt think of.

I'm glad that someone else thinks that a paring knife is a good camp knife. I think I suggested it in another thread a few weeks back regarding BOB's, though i wouldn't be surprised if I stole the idea from you, Ironhand! Since most paring knives have strong rivets, full or 3/4 length tangs and can take a decent edge, they're ideal for typical base camp operations.

Actually, making a functional wearable sheath out of scrap cardboard and duct tape is quite easy. Use the directions you list for your rudimentary "blade cover" as addressed in the article, and take a 6 inch strip of duct tape, fold it half longways, the whole length. Tape this to the back side of the blade cover, and voila - wearable sheath. In fact, I'm tempted to write up a little tutorial with pictures.

Ironhand, kudos for all the great articles brother!
