I like the paraffin "waterproofing" idea, Outlaw : )

That's a popular way to do it. Another way for waterproofing your matches is to use finger nail polish.

I'm lazy for my general purpose matches and I just find something to put them in for waterproofing.

Thanks, I have seen people do the nail polish one also.
But I prefer the Paraffin way because it has the dual purpose of waterproofing and adding a small amount of extra fuel to the initial flame. longer burn time for starting fire.

Nothing wrong with waterproof container way :o)

Oh, I meant to ask before, are we allowed to do more than one $10 list per month?? I have loads of ideas and seems ashame to wait.
Also did you want us to keep it along the same lines as your list for each month?

Outlaw,

Sorry for the delay in responding to this : P

You can purchase as you like, but the idea to is to work on things similar to what I'm buying, giving insights into ways YOU have found to use that equipment or how to modify it (like your waterproofing idea) or alternative uses for the gear. (Like Why Alex prefers the magnesium fire block to matches and the lighter OR I had money left and so I bought a candle and why.)

Also, I am going to suggest ways to practice with this gear to improve your survival skills.

We WILL get on to discussing other things as each month WILL be different as I lead us through the process of how to pick out your gear. In the end, anyone that is following along will have a great survival kit, have some working knowledge of the gear and gain from the experience of others (as a group) - which is the most valuable point.

So yes, you can move ahead in advance if you want, but let's try to keep the discusses each month on the gear I've purchased (as a focal point) for that month.

In the end, I will have a general discuss for anything that folks want to add to the kit or feel we've missed along the way.

Actually, for a family, - the 2 lb can makes a better pot for more than one person. You will also be able to pack in the can too : )

I like the larger can for rain water collection as it's easier with the larger container.

nice work : )

I bought Sunday at the Flea Market a GI surplus Rain Poncho with it's liner [ the classic "Woobie" ] in excellent condition... $5 the pair....The poncho can be rigged as a shelter or with the liner as a sleeping bag

Today I stopped by the Goodwill and bought a Camelback pack for $5, don't see a model but is a medium size pack. Is black and has somebody name wrote on it but really doesn't show any signs it was ever used. The bladder still has the insert and I am sure it was never filled....Thinking about fitting it out for a bag to keep in my car trunk..

This what I found at the local dollar store today for $10.

Kitchen Helper 4 inch boning knife with plastic sheath and built in sharpener [what ever you need a knife for]
5 pack disposable lighters [fire]
2 AA flash light with 4 batteries [light]
Sauce pan [cooking/boil water]
1 pound macaroni [food]
4 pack dry soup mix [mix with macaroni, for flavor]
6 pack 16.9 oz bottle water [water & reusable]
4 pack shammies [washing, drying, and water filter]
Duct tape 2 inch X 10 feet [handy man helper]
Travel size toiletry set (bar soap, tooth paste, tooth brush, small shampoo, 6 pack baby wipes) [cleaning]
2 plastic shopping bags (free) [supply haulers - short term]
Cash register receipt and packaging (fire starter) [easier than twigs]

I think that this is a good starter BOB for almost any one.

Your supposed to spend $10 or less, and try to see if you can purchase similar items to Ironhands.

I love this so much!

Today from target:
~5 pk lighter bic ( I'm debating on whether or not to open the plastic to store in different kits since there is 5) $3.99
~First Aide Kit (as compared to johnson and johnson?) $4.19 (I plan on buying a bag one from online that has more items though)
~Water Proof Camp Matches (Comes with 4 pks, and each pk has 40 matches.) $ 1.99

Still need to get a knife, but I'm not exactly sure what kind yet. (Either a swiss or folding one, either to start off with.)

Freebies:
~ 3 wired hangers (Gonna start more than one kit)
~3 Plastic Grocery Bags
~Tin Can (Going to get more once I use the food that's inside.)
~Tennis Shoes (Never use them, so might as well pack them)
[EDIT]
Got 2 pairs of gloves and small gauzes for my first aide kit at the doctors office today!

I did spend more, but it's about what fits yourself personally and I thought a first aide kit was really important. I do plan on getting a knife sooner or later in the month, so that'll add to my total later so I'm going to estimate $20-$25 will be spent.
~Pill bottles I plan on getting later as well once I use up my medicines.
~Plastic bottles will awsome come later once I settle into my new apartment.

Jive had a very good point here..... If you know what you are looking for, you can find MUCH better quality knives in yard sales for 50% or less of their price and "lightly" used.

I found my Buck 103 Skinner in a yard sale for $10 used. It had been sharpened several times, but the make and steel are made to last.

So keep this option in mind when you're looking around for a knife as this is really a good venue to get a great knife cheap.
