LJ's BOB, Update!

I've decided to take the initiative and finally complete my BOB page to show folks what I have chosen to use if SHTF. This BOB is heavily influenced by Ironhand's advice, through his articles and personal advice that I've received in the past. The big can for boiling water? His idea. Also comes in handy for LOTS of other things! Please note that I've chosen to leave out the weapons and EDC gear thus far but rest assured that I will add that in the near future. Let me know what you guys think. Any reasonable suggestions will likely be implemented, but as you can see - I'm working with a very small (1400 CI) and lightweight pack, and pack space is at a premium. EDIT: For those that haven't figure out that there's a link above (next to Location:) I've posted a link below. http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/page/LJ126%27s+EDC%2C+BOB+and+Survival+Gear 4 out of 4 found this valuable. A sound layout of kit there mate. I was just wondering why you have such round pans? Wouldn't a military sized mess tin be better? And also, dop you have any other means of water purification i.e. for when the tablets run out? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Excellent loadout man, only thing I would add would be more paracord. Its like money, pretty girls, and ammo there is never enough of it. Also I am not familiar with your area, but if you are concerned enough about bugs I would throw in a bug net for my noggin a slightly longer term solution than det.

Those boots look more for dress than function. How do they feel?

@ SGTGerman:I'll probably end up replacing with military spec mess kit in the future, this one is a cheapo-aluminum kit that I beat up on pretty heavily. Also, the big metal can is used to boil water, and the water purification tablets are actually a back up to that method (for when fire isn't possible or wise.) As advised by Ironhand, I'm planning on punching a hole up top and mounting a very basic handle so that I can move the can from boiling without burning myself... @Cyrano222 Good advice bud. I'm planning on adding some ACU paracord and a few tent stakes in the near future. I've got a camo net that I didn't think to grab and throw in the BOB, I'll do that later on. @Alex They're an older pair of Danner uninsulated work boots that I've had for quite a few years now - they're not fancy, but they're well broken in and very comfortable. My only complaint with them is that they're pretty heavy. However, the fit is great, the toe box is perfect for my super wide feet. I'm actually planning on replacing them next month if I can afford to do so, and I'll probably be replacing them with another pair of Danner boots. Keep it coming guys! I Don't be afraid to be rough, you're certainly not going to hurt my feelings at all. Do you find this valuable? |

You're a good person, you have the exact same Ka-Bar as I do. Is it serrated or not?Maybe add a folding saw, or a smaller knife. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

It's the serrated version. in retrospect, I probably would've gone without, as I've only ever used it a couple of times - though it comes in real handy for cutting rope. A folding saw is a great idea Conmiro! Do you have any suggestions on what kind to get? I've been looking at a Gerber but I'm not sold yet. Also, to address the smaller knife part; my EDC consists of two knives, a Victorinox "Tinker" and a little Kershaw "Barrage." I figure that I'm carrying these pretty much everywhere I go, so I didn't list them on my BOB - though I should snap a picture and post it up before my BOB, just to let folks know what other stuff I keep on my person. For example, I meant to add my MP3 player and sunglasses but since they're most readily a part of a different layer of carry, I have omitted them. EDIT: Spelling and such Do you find this valuable? |

I've been looking at a Gerber but I'm not sold yet.I like the Gerber Exchange A blade, because there are two blades- a hardwood and a softwood one. The non exchangeable bladed ones are great also. There's also the Walmart special, which is decent, however nowhere close to the Gerber. Edit: Hey! That's the exact same knife as I have. NAU WAI! Do you find this valuable? |

Alright, after some PM's back and forth with OutlawJames, I've decided to make a few other changes too. The canned spam and chili are coming out and being replaced with freeze-dried food and probably an MRE or two.Ironhand also suggested a roll of twine via PM. It's uses are innumerable, as it can be used for making repairs to pack and clothes, replacement bootlace, bow string, spear construction, hanging clothing to dry, bear bagging, medical use, handles for things.... cheapo cotton twine is getting added! So... all of the changes suggested and being implemented thus far: 1) 550 Paracord addition 2) Gerber folding saw addition 3) Canned food removed, freeze-dried/MRE added 4) Cotton twine added And later on down the road... 1) New boots (lighter boots needed!) 2) Surplus mil-spec mess kit Do you find this valuable? |

Two things I would suggest.A Zip-loc bag of baking soda. Baking soda can be used for lots of things, scouring pots and pans, cleaning yourself, for brushing your teeth and in a pinch it can be used like quick clot to stop the flow of blood from a wound. A small jar of Vasoline. Vasoline is good to use on cuts to keep out moisture and can be applied to leather or canvas to waterproof those materials. It is a good lubricant as well. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Two more items I always suggest.Rat traps for trapping squirrels. Nail'em about shoulder high on a tree, add some peanut butter and your breakfast should be hangin' there waiting for you in the morning. Mechanical Fisherman's Yo-Yo. http://www.rockingaltd.com/mfish.html I've suggested these two since I came here. Don't believe me? Type Mechanical Fisherman's Yo-Yo into the search box and see. I've been pitching these little contraptions on this site forever for a reason. They work, they're light and they're cheap. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"@ T-Rat"Baking soda is a good idea, I'll probably add some tonight. The second is already covered - in the ziploc bag in the lower left part of the first picture, are some denim squares that are covered in vaseline. Their primary intention is to be used as firestarting material (which they excel at) but they could be used to waterproof boots and nylon. I've got some fishing supplies in my Tin Can survival kit but it's nothing compared to the fisherman yo-yo. I might have to check it out. Same with rat traps - I've got some snare wire in the tin can, but it's not going to be as effective as rat traps would be. I've got a little bit of space I can fill still in the bag, but these items might fill it up! Do you find this valuable? |

Alright folks, I just added my EDC setup (some parts vary from day to day, especially handgun) for ***** and grins. Frankly, I don't wanna unshelve all of my zombie flicks again, but I forgot to take a picture of my holster... it's a leather HBE brand inside-the-waistband holster, which I carry at the 3 o'clock strong side position. Hmm thats a lot of DVD's to carry EDC do you have enough pockets for them all or do you use a rucksack? Curious which brand that light is on your keychain and how many lumens. Also a comment on the 2 knifes. If you try a leatherman of nearly any variety that suits your needs the Wave, Surge, Skeletool CX or whatever meets your needs. The quality is above and beyond and with all the options you can replace any swisstool and get two great full sized knives like in the Surge. I can honestly say I can no longer justify carrying just a folder when I have such a great multitool with so much more capability. Do you find this valuable? |

"Hmm thats a lot of DVD's to carry EDC do you have enough pockets for them all or do you use a rucksack?im going to have to second what VK said. i would loose the swiss army knife and get a multi-tool that you like instead it should do everything you need and you have a set of pliers/wire cutters as well. @VK i dont know many girls who carry a pocket knife let alone a multi-tool, im very impressed.
