Where would you scavenge?
Aug 1 2010, 6:10 AM EDT | Post edited: Aug 1 2010, 6:10 AM EDT
While searching for goods, you encounter a problem that only gives you time to visit 1 store; any store of your choosing, whether it be a fast food restaurant or a wall*mart. Where do you go? Do you find this valuable?

No offense guys, but Wal-Mart's a death sentence. Everyone and their brother will be going there.
I'll find a link to a page called "The Panic" by PedroAsani. That will tell you a lot.

Ideally, you won't have to scavenge anything initially. You should try to have your stuff stored up so you can hunker down when the s*it hits the fan.

2 things I hope to never have to scavenge for are water and food. By planning extensively before SHTF I hope to be able to avoid this altogether.

One thing that many people overlook is clothing. Your clothes will wear down over time, leaving you more exposed to the elements. Scavenge ideas anyone?

I'd check out the army surplus only if I HAD TO. I mostly have everything but if i had to get something from there I desperately needed I'd observe it from afar before checking it out. Do you find this valuable?

well, lets say that you were all ready and had nothing to worry about until some group of raiders toss some molotav cocktails into your house and burn all of your emergency supplies? Do you find this valuable?

Umm, honestly, all of these places (with the exception of maybe staples) will get you killed.

only 2 seem plausible in that.
the garden centre, and staples (for whatever reason)

Personally I'd head to B&Q, get some building supplies and other stuff.
cars on the street, not that they would have food but I could take the fuel outa the tank.
and there is this garden centre near the BOL (the BOL is currently occupied by a farmer, I don't actually own the BOL)

Also an Idea would be to listen out for the military on the Radio, and scout around the position they located as a safe haven. As they may have tanks/APCs roaming around, and you could either wait till they got taken out by Zeds or Raiders or shoot them, then take the vehicle (and anything the Soldiers had on them). and boom instant army vehicle.

Scavenging relies on luck. You should not be relying on luck during an apocalypse.

If you think you are going to need more supplies, then buy them now. Preparation is what the site is all about.

In the short term, yes you rely on preparation.

Any longer than that? Or if circumstances change? You might have to scavenge, especially if you're on the move.

Yeah, but it's bad to count on that as your primary means of getting things. Try to store as much as you can.

Also, if you do scavenge, try places nobody else would think to look.

I never count on it, and I'm never going to attempt to scavenge anywhere there are large groups of people. Or any people at all for that matter.

Edit
I simply believe in exploiting anything I come across, whether that's a car I might be able to strip a couple of parts off of. Or a seemingly abandoned store I might be able to get something I need from.

Why the hell are my supplies in a position where they would be burned? When SHTF, my shlt will be in the middle of my house, so if the supplies burned, it wouldn't be about looting ****, it would be about finding another person willing to take my ass in.

Also, what kind of raider will burn your supplies? That's not what raiders do. Burning down your ****= no **** for them to take.

Fair enough
I have no qualms with taking things that can be of use.

I just don't like when people PLAN on finding everything they need by scavving.

Murphys law doesn't expire if zombies come :)

I've got my plans, and I've got my gear. But I can't plan for everything, my gear won't last forever, and it may break or get lost. So scavving might be an option someday.
