Concerning the AR10
Aug 1 2010, 7:32 AM EDT
I have been looking at the AR10 platform, and I have some questions concerning it. Firstly, would the .308 mags for an M14/M1A fit in an AR10? They both look very similar in pictures I have seen, but you can't always tell from just a pic. Secondly, If they are not compatible, what would be involved in altering the mags to fit the AR10? Thirdly, does anyone make a kit that will convert the AR10 to use a piston instead of the standard direct gas impingement? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Do you find this valuable? |

The original AR10 took a magazine very different then a M14 and don't see how they could be adapted to fit. Original AR10 mags are rare and I would think expensiveToday there are people that make .308 AR they call AR 10s but are different from the original and I think take different mags. I don't think you could modify M14 mags for them either. The M14 doesn't have a magazine well like an AR and doesn't have a push button mag. release so are quite a bit different from an AR10 Never heard of a gas piston AR10 but maybe someday I used to want an AR10 but instead got a semi M14. Nice rifle but I'm not a fan of it or other .308s semi as survival rifles Do you find this valuable? |

I'm thinking no on the mag issue, think about how both weapons hold the magazine in the weapon. Could they be altered? Maybe, but why not just go buy AR10 mags though? Having the mags that are meant for your weapon is a much better idea.I know they make kits for the AR15, which means it shouldn't be too hard to find them for the AR10 (Though I wonder if the conversion kits would work no matter what caliber you're shooting. I'm not the gunsmith, don't ask me!). The AR15 is much more common, so I had trouble finding any specifically for the AR10, but I'm sure they're out there. Just keep looking and good luck! http://www.ar15pro.com/category/1653-AR15_Piston_Conversion_Kit.aspx http://cgwgun.com/AR15-Gas-Blocks.aspx Do you find this valuable? |

Why not just get a quality AR lower and buy a converted .308 upper? Theres always the SCAR-17 if you have the money.Does Sig make a .308 AR? They use gas piston don't they? Do you find this valuable? |

"I googled this and apparently the new AR10 can use M14 mags that have been pretty highly modified from stockYikes! I googled for myself, only checked 5 or so sites but the average price for AR10 mags I found was $45. CheaperThanDirt has M14 mags for less than $10 (Would I trust a $10 mag in combat? Questionable...). I can see where you might want to look into using M14 mags... Some people on forums I've checked have suggested that all you need to do is switch out the M14 follower assembly for the AR10 parts and cut out the mag release hole on the side... Worth it? Up to you. Got some of my info on the mods from here. http://www.thehighroad.org/archive/index.php/t-260641.html Do you find this valuable? |

You're better off paying for quality mags than modifying crappy ones, trust me.

"You're better off paying for quality mags than modifying crappy ones, trust me."No doubt about that, but if I can find decent quality mags that are cheaper simply because they are more common, I figured that would be a better way to go. I'm not looking to cheap out on quality, just cost. I figured the M14 mags from CheaperThanDirt cost less because they were more readily available. Do you find this valuable? |

Apparently it can be done, though I figure... If you can afford a nice AR10 then you should be able to afford expensive mags right? ;)You can give it a try, may or may not be worth it. Do you find this valuable? |

I saw one site where they said if you sent them two M14 mags they would send you back one that had been modified for an AR 10There were some really poor quality after market M14 magazines sold that had a reputation for problems. I've only bought US surplus ones , luckly most I found at auctions, flea markets etc for cheap....ain't going to find many AR10 ones like that You can't use a standard AR 15 lower to make an AR10 because the .308 is to big for it Do you find this valuable? |
