Survival Plan Updates
Aug 2 2010, 1:06 PM EDT | Post edited: Aug 2 2010, 1:06 PM EDT
I will start updating my survival plan under new threads, to keep my main page cleaner.

Monday August 2, 2010

I haven't been posting updates on my plan lately, due to business matters. Since my last post, I have ordered 4 buckets of survival meals (http://www.amazon.com/Emergency-Survival-Food-Supply-Meal/dp/B0029BE7AW, $113.49 per bucket. each bucket has 275 meals). I plan to buy one or two per month from now on, and will store them at My BOL.(The initial four will stay at my home, since my strategy is to shelter in place for a short while, when shtf.)

As for my home to shelter in place, I have begun reinforcing my home by using 40' corrugated intermodal containers around the exterior of the house. I have designed them as additions to the home, and got approval from the Building inspector. Once finished, they will look just like brick additions to the house. The interior of the containers will be finished in fiberglass sheets, glued to the inside of the container, and the voids filled with expandable foam. The exterior will be finished in layers of chopper gun spray fiberglass(for strength and ballistic resistance, then rigid foam insulation, then pre-manufactured brick veneer backed by chopper gunned fiberglass. This should be a fairly inexpensive way to add square footage to the home,(increasing value), and help immensely to secure the home.

I also got the entire season of The Colony from last year. (http://store.discovery.com/detail.php?p=106303&v=discovery&ecid=PRF-TV1-100450&pa=PRF-TV1-100450) It is a good example experiment on survival after a global catastrophe, and has tons of tips for survivors. The new season is on now, and i plan on seeing every episode of it, especially since it takes place in my area of the world.(Louisiana, gulf coast area)

I found out that Harbor Freight has solar panels for sale. 45 watt panels for $150. I plan to buy a number of sets for more solar power at my BOL. Harbor Freight will have them on sale until the first of January 2011. Do you find this valuable?

I am looking into constructing a solar pond on my BOL.

"A solar pond consists of three main layers. The top layer is near ambient temperature and has a low salt content. The bottom layer is hot – typically 160–212°F (71–100°C) – and is very salty. The important gradient zone separates these two. The gradient zone acts as a transparent insulator, permitting sunlight to be trapped in the hot bottom layer (from which useful heat is withdrawn). This is because the salt gradient, which increases the brine density with depth, counteracts the buoyancy effect of the warmer water below (which would otherwise rise to the surface and lose its heat to the air). An organic Rankine cycle engine, or a Sterling engine, is used to convert the thermal energy to electricity. "

There are no collectors and storage tanks with this system. A pond is filled with a dense saline solution. Due to the density of the solution on the bottom of the pond there is a resistance to the convection process which would cause mixing. The result is a very hot layer of water on the bottom which is pumped through a heat exchanger.

Me and my family were spending the labor day holiday in Corpus Christie/Port Aransas, and I just happen to carry my small weather radio. Lo and Behold, it starts squawking about 1:00 am monday morning about tropical storm Hermine heading for where we were.

So we packed up and left about 12 hours sooner than we had planned, and drove back to Houston ahead of the storm.

It pays to be prepared!!!!!!!

one of my pear trees bore a lot of fruit this year, so I decided to begin learning wine making with the pears (since I am going to try to pay for my BOL from a vineyard and winery.). I have enough pears to make a gallon and a half. I purchased a wine making kit(it has everything in it to make one gallon, or so, of wine) so I will make this first batch, and let everyone know how it turns out. Do you find this valuable?

The winemaking is going very well! I have had the wine in the secondary fermenter since September 26, and now it has completely settled, and has a clear amber color, and a nice smell of a heady wine.

i will bottle it in about a month or so, and have it ready for christmas. If this batch goes well, I will scale up to a larger batch around the first of the year, and maybe by the end of the next year, I should be making about 20-30 gallons per month. Once I get to that point, i will apply for a winery license, and start making it pay for itself.

I recently found a decent Mosin Nagant 91/30(long version) at a gun show, with a badly cracked stock(held together by wood glue, and brown duct tape, and missing all of the accessories, including the butt plate), for only $30! It has been fired a bit, (a little shiny breech), but I jumped on it, and plan on putting a new synthetic stock($59), cheap new optics($22.99 for the Leapers Golden Image Classic TS 4X32), bipod(used universal bipod for $10), and some other goodies on it. My total budget for it is $200,(including purchase price) and It looks like I can easily make that number.

This will be my third Mosin Nagant.

Also picked up a new Marlin 795. ($75 with a rebate from Marlin) It is a good looking .22 rifle. I plan to also get some goodies for it, and use it a cheap target practice gun. It will be a good small animal/small deer hunting rifle.

Seems as though you're just getting hit by a storm of good luck. That luck could save your life(though I wouldn't depend on it). Have you considered a canned food supply? I've met so many people who owe their lives to having one. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I am a major league scrounger, and a big tightwad!!!!! I hate to spend money for anything!!!!!! Thrift stores(goodwill, salvation army, etc.), garage/yard sales, Craigslist, Freecycle groups, going out of business sales, are all my friends.

I have been buying emergency survival food supplies, (http://www.amazon.com/Emergency-Survival-Food-Supply-Meal/dp/B0029BE7AW). One tub, once a month. I have 7 buckets right now. 4 at my home, and 3 at my BOL. I plan on having enough for my entire group for two years if SHTF. I figure we would need that much time for everything to settle down, and crops to begin to be viable.

Sorry for not being able to post more updates. I have been very busy lately with my company.

New update:
One of The wildfires in Texas is about 3-4 miles away from my BOL. For a few months now, I have been clearing brush away from the main habitation site on my BOL, but from what I have seen, this batch of wildfires are wind driven, and has been able to jump large distances. The preliminary buildings that I have put onsite have 4 hour fire rating construction, so my buildings may be able to survive a fire. i am crossing my fingers.

The wine grapes bloomed again, regardless of my ham fisted attempts last year of starting them. Looks like they are hardier than I thought (they survived me...LOL!!!!!!) Since they are doing ok this second year, I will look at propagating them, and getting the vineyard up and going in a larger scale. I also created a very nice dessert wine from a apple, and pear tree that is growing at my primary home in Houston, I may add pear and apple trees at my BOL, and begin making a specialty, limited edition, High end dessert wine from the fruit. The revenue from the wine making would help to pay for the BOL.

I am also looking at Beekeeping, in order to create another revenue stream, and to have an additional weapon to use against raiders. (tossing bee hives at raiders will do wonders in breaking up a raider organization. As they dance around swatting at stinging bees, they can be picked off with a rifle shot And maybe some of them will be allergic to the bees). Bees are becoming a major commodity, as there has been a mass die off of bee hives around the world. Post Zed, they will make a comeback, but it will be advantageous to start hives now.

New Update:

A few weeks ago,Me and my family were caught in a wildfire, as we drove back from Dallas. I-45 was shutdown for a while, and when it was re-opened, the Texdot authorities allowed drivers to drive through the burned areas. However.....the fires were not extinguished!!!!!!!!!!!!!! flames were licking the sides of the road, as we drove by!!!!!!!!!!! I have survival bags in each of my vehicles, but not much that could handle a forest fire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was not very smart on the part of TXDOT to reopen the highway when they did.

in the last weeks, a tropical storm is bearing down on us, and it is giving us enough time to plan a response. My family will use this as a practice to evac to the BOL.

Wine grape update:
I approached a alcohol distributor to possibly carry one of our wine products that was produced from grapes at my BOL. The distributor really liked the product, and will try to get it into one of the largest retailers in Texas!!!!!!! If this works out, the BOL will be well on it's way to paying for itself.

Texas has had a major outbreak of forest fires over the last two years. (Global warning causing drought conditions?) I have had two fires come near my BOL this year. I am going to have to rethink my BOL layout, in order to take into consideration forest fires. We have never had any major forest fires in Texas until the last few years. (That I can remember)

The drought has caused a poor yeild on my fruit trees, and my grape vines are also doing poorly. I will need to speed up development of water wells on my BOL, to provide water to the plants, and drinking water. The wells may help with forest fires also, if I can build large enough storage tanks, and delivery systems.

I recently picked up a USA Air Force crash axe for free! It is a USAF aircrew Crash Axe, Vietnam era, that measures 15" in length with a 7 1/2" wide head. It has a Hard rubber handle that can withstand up to 20,000 volts. It looks like a good zombie melee weapon, because it has a long pointed steel end that looks like it can easily puncture a skull, if sharpened. I posted a pic of it in a new photo album that I created to show the equipment that I have. Do you find this valuable?

It has been a interesting day in Texas. We had a 4.6 earthquake here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The epicenter of the quake was near rural Karnes County, 47 miles southwest of San Antonio. The quake struck at 7:24 a.m. local time, and was the largest earthquake on record for the area, surpassing a magnitude-4.3 shock recorded in 1993, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Southern Texas has been experiencing small earthquakes since the 1970s, and that 14 quakes between 2.6 and 3.4 magnitudes have been recorded since 1982.

The Associated Press reports small vibrations felt in San Antonio did cause occupants to briefly evacuate a downtown federal building as a precaution.

So it looks like I may have to earthquake proof my BOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found three airsoft AK47 at a garage sale for $10. They look pretty close to the real ones that I have. I decided to buy them for inexpensive training tools. I will practice entering buildings, etc. with them, and they can be used to teach the basics of marksmanship to people who have never fired a gun before. (I am amazed at how many people I run into (EVEN HERE IN TEXAS!!!!!!) who have never held a gun!) I figure it would be cheaper, and save ammo, if I teach someone the basics (BRM) using a airsoft gun, and re-usable pellets, instead of using a real weapon.

When they get proficient with handling a airsoft weapon safely and consistently, I can transition them to a real weapon. Post ZPOC, anyone approaching my BOL with no shooting experience would go through this training. I may need to come up with a written procedure for integrating/training refugees who are taken into the BOL.

We are having a somewhat rainy summer in the Houston area, but a drought at my BOL.(again) I hope we get some rain from the storms that are hitting Mexico, and other areas of the Carribean. We haven't had a hurricane scare yet, but the busy season for Hurricanes is starting.

I hope my plan is ready. I will keep working on it, and updating/changing it.

I just found out that there is a state jail within 10 minutes of my house. I may consider it as a waypoint on the way to my BOL. In a Z outbreak, maybe It could become a secure rendezvous point for my BUG out Buddies. We could possibly stay there for a while, until everyone show, then take off. (depending on how many of the prisoners are there, and how civil they are.)

Also, I just recently came across a deal to buy a mid eighties, 5 ton military truck, complete, for $1000. (From one of my favorites sellers, the angry wife)

I knew about how these trucks were modified into feared gun trucks during Vietnam, and so I am probably going to buy it, once I clear out space for it. I did a little research into gun trucks, and came across info on using concrete to armor vehicles.
