Pneumatic weapons
Aug 5 2010, 11:10 AM EDT
I heard that air guns (pellet guns) could be deadly, but I'm not pretty sure about it.There are spring guns out there which could kill deer, or use an air chamber to store pressurized gas. I have a few questions: would they be deadly, reliable and abundant in ammo? Also, are they durable? 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Hmm... I've seen a lot of pellet rifles that will beat a .22LR rifle for velocity, the fastest I've heard of one shooting was 1600 feet per second. A good rifle is reliable and probably pretty durable, my buddy has had some 1300 FPS air rifles from RWS for 10 or so years now, they'll shoot through a 2x4. The problem is that after a while they need work done to them, sooner or later I guess they don't hold pressure as well. But deadly? Save them for the squirrels, buy a real rifle for the zombies. "Hmm...Yes but they are shooting a projectile that is probably around the 1/3 of the weight of a .22 LR, that is why they go so fast There are some ,mostly custom made, air guns that shoot larger bore projectiles [,45 or 50 and i think even 58 cal.] that are powerful enough to kill game such as deer and Hogs, i even read about a guy that killed a buffalo with one. You can cast the projectiles for them yourself easly using a mold. I still think in the long run you would be better off with a .22 Do you find this valuable? |

"Yes but they are shooting a projectile that is probably around the 1/3 of the weight of a .22 LR, that is why they go so fast"That's why I said to leave the pellet gun for the squirrels. On a more interesting note, the Austrian army apparently used an air rifle during the late 1700s to the early 1800s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girandoni_Air_Rifle Do you find this valuable? |

I believe that if you set a paintball gun to 300fps and fill a hopper with marbles, it can break the skin and break the skull too. So a paintball gun could actually be deadly

I am pretty sure that it is easier to make ammo than real powder guns because of the "propellant" being in the gun itself. So, you could mold the ammo yourself and it is ready to fire. Do you find this valuable? |

I was on the web, and I found out that there are guns that are more powerful than spring guns like Pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) guns. Essentially, you could pump the cylinder in the gun with a pump or just discharge air from a SCUBA tank. The ammo it shoots is really small, but some have the same penetration as a 9mm or a .45 ACP. I was thinking if you could mold your own ammo or possibly make the gun shoot longer ammo to improve damage. Possibly, if you make your own ammo, the ammo itself could have modifications eg. steel tip but will it be possible? Last question: will a can fit on the end of the barrel (air guns are not silent)? @acer81996 you show me an air rifle that gets the same penetration as a 9mm of 45 ACP and i'll **** brix. an air rifle is not capable of doing that neither is it capable of killing anything larger than a squirrel@BrinUllman you will blow up your paint ball gun trying that Do you find this valuable? |

"@acer81996 you show me an air rifle that gets the same penetration as a 9mm of 45 ACP and i'll **** brix."The link above by 2WheeledSpeed could prove that. Air rifles could also be used to hunt bison. Surely that would be more than a 9mm and they saw military action. http://sniper99.com/2007/03/26/american-bison-hunt-a-picture-is-worth-a-thousand-words-2/ Do you find this valuable? |

This topic has been brought up recently. Air rifles HAVE been used in warfare, mostly by the French and in the 1800's. The reason they didn't stick around is because they aren't always predictable. Common airgun ammunition is made to the high specifications of match shooting ammunition, and is FAR less accurate or consistent even at short distances. Springs wear out. A post apoc world will make it very difficult to properly repair a pneumatic device. Do you find this valuable? |

"I believe that if you set a paintball gun to 300fps and fill a hopper with marbles, it can break the skin and break the skull too. So a paintball gun could actually be deadly"Meh, you will wear out your bolt and feeder really quickly, crank out the velocity screw (like i did on my A-5) and rip through a rotting tree stump like a chainsaw from 100 feet. better yet, use magnetix balls, they have a little more heft to them. Use compressed air, its better than CO2, god knows why, it just is. i wouldnt risk my life on it, but in a pinch, these can kill, it might not be the first shot, the 5th, or the 10th, but when my gun is blasting 30bps at well over 450fps, and glass and metal is raining hell, you can crack bones, rip skin (especially with the glass marbles) and just tear something to shreds. i wanna test this though, it would be useless against body armor, but a good head shot would knock someone on their ass EDIT: ive thrown marbles and magnetix balls through my A5, it required me getting a new bolt, the plastic ones **** the bed, this was kind of a torture test because i wanted to get a new bolt anyway, and my friend said it would ruin it, so ruin it i did. it sawed though i wanna say like a 10 inch stump, that was pretty wet and rotted, i couldnt kick the thing over though, and the gun ripped through it wicked fast, if you equate dead meat to dead tree fiber, then this would be perfect :) Do you find this valuable? |

"thats a good way to blow up your paintball gun and get plastic shrapnel in your upper torso + head and neck areaif your gun is made of plastic then you already have a problem. and as for barrel pressure, you can crank it up to stupid amounts, its not gona break, if its made of the right stuff, like steel or aluminium, then you'll be fine to max out the velocity Do you find this valuable? |

I've seen people do some stupid stuff with paintball guns, the only gun I've ever seen come apart was a $20 plastic WalMart gun. And it didn't really explode, not nearly enough to send shrapnel anywhere. Not that I endorse shooting anything other than paintballs out of your paintball gun! Do you find this valuable? |

Paintball guns are not weapons. They are toys in a game. For the price of most paintball guns you could get a decent bow. Do you find this valuable? |

"if your gun is made of plastic then you already have a problem. and as for barrel pressure, you can crank it up to stupid amounts, its not gona break, if its made of the right stuff, like steel or aluminium, then you'll be fine to max out the velocity"not necessarily true, if you start sucking liquid co2 you could easily push the material past the nil-ductility point. On more expensive guns this wouldn't be an issue, but on cheaper ones it could pose a problem. As Conmiro pointed out, paintball guns are sports equipment. If you want a gun, buy a gun. If you aren't old enough to buy a gun, convince your parents to. Do you find this valuable? |

what about those pellet guns with a pressure chamber? those could be used for hunting too and some of them shoot large-caliber slugs.

WOW UBER NECROPOST!not really. But i saw it on the bottom and remembered this thread, and remembered the idea i wanted to post on august 10th way back when this was a current thread, but i never got to it. HAS ANYONE PLAYED METRO2033? my point in asking is, they have a couple pneumatic weapons in there.. one that shoots lead balls, the other shoots steel spikes... I'm just kinda, pointing that out. They were hand charged and all, so no needing to fill tanks with gas from a supply all the time.. but it would be time consuming... MY point is.. if we were 10,15 years down the road, wouldn't it be efficient to have a projectile weapon that you can make the ammo for.. and be able to fire rapidly? (DO NOT BRING UP BOWS.. seriously, i know that would be better.. this is just cooler) Ugh.. reading that makes it seem stupid. you ZSDWians get it. air weapons to replace the guns that run outta ammo. I think using a good Pnumatic Rifle would look kinda Steam Punkish (very cool imo), and I believe it would be about as accurate as a musket, ie not very accurate. One of my buds did kill a rabbit with his Tippman.
