Training troops
Aug 12 2010, 2:13 PM EDT
How do you suppose after people start making very large settlments do you think they would train there militias or soldiers, and how how well trained would they be? Could the settlement that has better trained and better equiped troops be the dominant power in an area? Would it be better to learn how to replicate fire arms so that your troops have better orginization rather than letting them have whatever fire arm they find laying around? [dont say anything if you cant read it]

It would help a lot if there were any former military or police personnel in the settlement, they'd know the value of training and organizing any official or semi-official militia/army. How well trained would they be? Really depends on who's training them, and how motivated they are. It would also help to have enough expendable ammo to train with (Not a super good idea to send guys into battle who have only fired their weapon once or twice). It's possible that airsoft and paintball could be used in a limited role to fill in for training (Before anyone trashes airsoft/paintball, cops and soldiers already use them for training). Even a half trained militia will have an advantage over a mob of guys with guns. Discipline and training matter, always have and always will. Having a clear chain of command is important, as is having the discipline to obey leaders under fire. As for replicating firearms, I assume you mean manufacturing your own standard weapon? It would require alot of technical knowledge and equipment to do that, an easier idea would be to either standardise caliber as much as possible (Try to issue your men with only rifles chambered in 5.56, or 7.62x39, whatever you have the most of). Or "requisition" the most commonly owned firearms in your settlement, ARs, AKs and the SKS are all very popular. With a big enough settlement I'd bet you'd have quite a few of those. That's just my 2 cents though. Do you find this valuable? |

And im pretty sure that replicting firearms would be diffucult but not impossible like i dont think even an AK would be all that easy to make. but say a lever action or bolt action rifle may be possible to replicate if you have one and maybe improve it. i think the best would be to have a few WELL trained soldiers that a lot of medium trained guys.I think soldiers would be the most likely survivors once society falls and im pretty sure they are going to be the leaders of most settlements, this means that a lot of settlements are going to have well trained troops Do you find this valuable? |

I have to register my concern over some users use of militaristic terms when they clearly don't apply.A military is an organisation that uses force to defend a country, and is attached to and sanctioned by the ruler(s) of that country. You are not, and will not be, the ruler of a country. So you will not have a military. Same with soldiers and troops. You might have a militia, a squad, possibly a police force (I'd argue that you need to have a fairly significant population before you can call whatever organised thugs you assemble the "police") although police is again a word with connotations. A police force upholds the laws of the county, state, etc. Which means you would need to have a written list of laws. Guards, watchmen, border-patrol, defenders, guardians, sentry, sentinel, warden. Plenty of choice alternatives. Pick one. Pick several. Why does this matter? Well when I hear things like "I will train my military forces.." it gives me the impression that given the chance to be part of a military junta in some banana republic, you would take it, because what you want is power. But if you said, "I would train the Sentinels to stay alert and watch the perimeter, and let the Watchmen deal with any internal problems such as thievery, fighting, etc..." then that gives the impression you have thought about internal and external security in a post-Z world. I think you're being too picky about terminology and being politically correct.Militia is probably the perfect term to describe most "military" forces existing to defend organized settlements in a post z-day scenario. And that's exactly what the original post was about. Most men won't have the time or luxury to be full time soldiers unless you have a very large and very developed settlement, so military service would be mostly a part time, as needed thing. But just because you rely on a part-time militia rather than a standing army for external defense does not mean you cannot train or equip them to be an effective fighting force. Switzerland is a perfect modern day example, and I've seen ancient Greece cited a few times on this forum. Do you find this valuable? |

I can (right now, today) equip, train and deploy a full squad (11).Over time and with growth of numbers, those closest to me (and with my guns) will become my Praetorian Guard. 4 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

2Wheel, it's not picky, and I am definitely not politically correct. But I have seen an increase in "My military.." and "My troops.." threads, and the content and tone is worryingly shortsighted and megalomaniacal. If people think about the names a little more, they might think about their use and origin a little more. I fully endorse MD's Praetorian Guard. Especially if it implies that MD will be sharing power with a second, less militaralistic person. I can see that working quite well. i think the term sentinel sounds and works pretty good.Well I could train a sentinel guard to use bows and crossbows, even javelins. I kind of like all that stuff 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

So what if you just make a Militia for external threats and a Town guard to maintain law and order in your settlment and finally border guards to defend the borders wouldnt that be good?

That's the kind of model I would expect to see implemented in a township with a few hundred people, certainly. For smaller groups, everyone would be considered militia, border guards would be whoever is on lookout duty, and everyone is their own Town guard, because the group is tight knit. I would want someone who could watch the rest of the communities backs while we strive to set up things like running water, sewer systems and gardens. Yeah we can do all those things without a working crew of guards but concentrating on getting those things running again while looking over your shoulder every five seconds would not help you keep your mind on things. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. "2Wheel, it's not picky, and I am definitely not politically correct. But I have seen an increase in "My military.." and "My troops.." threads, and the content and tone is worryingly shortsighted and megalomaniacal.PedroAsani, in respect to you and all others here, let me point out a simple feat of humans: we tend to personalize our ideas. By that I mean, if I'm discussing how I'd build a fortress, or how I'd secure resources like running water, I'd call it "my plan to..." Its a general misconception that certain thread starters might think they'll have an army to command.. but I give them slack in light of what i stated a few sentences ago. With that said, lets refer to this as "how would a settlement train its troops?" now, for my 2 cents on the OP: Well, training troops post WROL/SHTF involves a bit of skill vs understanding. a settlement can have former LE members or former military operatives. Those people would probably head the 'training' of any force to protect the settlement. The skills would be trained as well as passed on. Say you DIDN'T have any combat trained persons in your settlement. Well, thats where understanding comes into play.. If you lack the knowledge of something, you seek out how to learn it. If anyone is curious in this or perhaps wants to learn so they can pass knowledge on, I'd reccomend a few tactics books and military training guides.. Theres a couple out there to my knowledge that could help.. (example 1: leader of town A trains they're troops based on a book he/she found.) Do you find this valuable? |

There are a lot of things to think on and to be honest what you call your guards ain't on the list. Call it a military, a police force, or The Great Gooey Oompa Loompa Fighting Force of Friendship. It Does Not Matter. As to training it depends. If you have LEOs or Military those guys (or gals) would obviously be trainers. If however you don't have them you work with what you know. I'd suggest learning the terrain. Do you find this valuable? |

"There are a lot of things to think on and to be honest what you call your guards ain't on the list. Call it a military, a police force, or The Great Gooey Oompa Loompa Fighting Force of Friendship. It Does Not Matter."This. It really does not matter what the connotations are at this time. I am of the opinion that giving your "Security Entity" an official sounding name that represents something well-known to the settlers as a force of lawful goodness will strengthen morale and might even motivate your armed forces to behave themselves (if you sell it). There are alot of considerations when training a body of troops for combat. Many of them are psychological. Oftentimes the people being trained aren't even aware of the reasons and effects of the methods. There is alot I have had to teach myself, and other things I have learned as an NCO about how to train my people properly. Many times you get the "how" to teach them, but not the "why." This is not quite so important when you have a large military organization that is compartmentalized and there are senior ranking officers available to know these things and take care of the "why," but if you don't it is important to know where your teaching methods are coming from. Otherwise, you are imitating, like a monkey and not getting the real desired effect of the training. Teaching your people bad habits that may get them killed or put them in a world of hurt psychologically when they have to fight for you. If you want to be able to train troops, you need to start reading books on the subject. Like, now. My 2¢ Do you find this valuable? |
