Survival plan: The Wayward Train
Aug 13 2010, 10:03 AM EDT | Post edited: Aug 13 2010, 10:03 AM EDT
I have been pondering this little scheme for a while, I would hook up a few carts to a train and just drive it around, say there are 7 carts I would have it go Conducter, living quarters, living quarters and also entertainment section( to ease the tension) ,storage(food),storage(other), vehicle storage, Guard quarters(so it is easy for armed survivors to get off and check out small towns for supplies, survivors or clear the tracks. I would also have a couple birds nest on each cart to be extra cautious. So the routine would be travel around the tracks until I come to civilization then send out a heavily armed search party to look for the usual supplies and survivors. So how does that sound to yall 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Hhhhmmm interesting its good to see some original thoughts and I really like this plan...

But...

Have you or any of you survival party ever been able to run, operate, navigate, maintain, Unhook carts and rehook carts and refuel a train?

Fuel whats your plan?

An irreplacible piece of your train fails, now what?

The rails ahead of you are damaged (or melted down by some raider who saw miles of unattended raw materials)now what?

Raiders have placed mines under the railing but you dont know where, Now what?

You let a "survivor" on your train who turns on your team, now what?

Raiders see a Fridge/Armoury/Carpark on wheels and attack, Now what?

Your train is inopperable for today (Minor problem) now what?

Like I said brilliant plan and if anything goes wrong you still have a working shelter.

But please think it through and if you have answer for these questions I applogise in advance for being a complete A$$-Hat

It is a good and original thought, but If I was lucky enough to come across a train on the tracks, I believe I would secure the area, put up obstacles around the train, and just hold up there for a while. Do everything you said, but just stay put. You could have a nice little living on a train, as long as raiders didn't come around. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Hey y'all! I'm not from Texas but i think that's funny. anyways, i live in California, and i also live about half an hour's drive from a oil processing plant, which makes oil, into gasoline, diesel and other crap. They use trains to take the gasoline up to Tahoe City. So here is my plan:

1. Drive with other people i know to the train depot about midway into the outbreak. fill up like 20 tank cars with diesel, attach to a train, with 2 cabooses, then drive and bring an engineer with me.

2. At some point i will come across a train depot, as theirs lots in California, swap my cabooses for passenger double decker's, and raid the town. I will take flat cars and put up walls around them and grow gardens.

3. Hopefully having 50+ people on board, we will also take repair cars. If we run out of gas, having taken/kidnapped an engineer from the oil plant, we will drive back and restock.

4. Armor will be added to all of the cars and so will be weapon slot's. We will also take several box cars and fridge cars for supplies. IF we ever come across and Abrams main battle tank and Only maybe IF, we could possible mount the turret on one of the box cars.

5. WE PWN ZOMBIES!!!!!!!!!

6. Questions anyone?

Hope you're either currently an engineer or train operator, 'cuz you can't just 'wing it' like an unfamiliar car.

Hola. I have had experience with train before as my grandfather hired me to work at the train museum he worked at. Once a year he would drive a train about one mile with 50-60 people on boar and tell them about the sights and the train. The train was a sante fe express and is similiat to modern diesel trains. While he stood in the back with the people, I would drive the train at about 5 miles per hour, stopping frequently. I have some experience woth switching tracks and refueling. Also if we found enough survivors we could make bases at the train depots. If 1 were to fall we could retreat to the other. The wall would be a 8 foot tall 1 ft thick brick wall. Chain link fences would be used as a temporary stop gap. Wells would be dug and we could take cows from the farms n calfornia to breed and eat. Do you find this valuable?

it seems like a fun and interesting idea, but it also seems far too complicated depending on the end of the world scenario. As a machinist I can tell that if something on that train broke and you had to fix it, the time, energy and manpower it would take to replace such a part would be daunting to say the least. Plus the one bad thing about trains is they're so damn predictable, a raiding party could derail you and then where would you be. Do you find this valuable?

well, nothing short of an RPG is gonna derail an 120 tons freight train moving at sixty miles an hour. Trains are used were the terrain is to expensive to build a road upon. The course the train in Tahoe is through a sparsely populated area and a it is barely visible from the highway. A raider would have to have some serious off-road power and if not that a least a helicopter. I mean, come on, trains are built so that things DON'T BREAK. If something does break, well, now you can add armor over the wheel and now u have an impenetrable fortress. My plan also calls for 2 freight trains at each end so speed is boosted and if 1 breaks we can just push it off the track. Theres also multiple tracks. I mean, moving the train would only be in the first part of the plan, and when were well stocked, park in the middle of nowhere. And instead of a brick wall, if we found a crane car, we could take unused cars of the tracks at depots and make a makeshift wall. the gaps could be filled in with dirt or cement. Demsmine, what would be ur plan? Why the criticism ? I mean, a lot of ur guys plans revolve around having 100 kabillion dollars to make moats and land mines and rockets. Mine just consistes of stealing. I mean, if ur guys plans are pretty cool; camp in my walled fortress of a house for 5 years and slowly go insane, where plans that have you doing things like driving and adding components keep people sane. And suppose a raider came to YOUR base with the RPG's and grenades u guys think raiders have. THEY WOULD KILL YOU. they could just camp outside until your supplies ran out, or because you can move your base, blow it up with RPG's.
On another note, i was thinking of taking the gun powder out of bullets and combining it with a alarm clock and a plastic baggy. If raiders did have RPG's, i would abandon the fuel cars and but a fifteen min. fuse in each of them and the raiders would probably leave me alone and go for the fuel, and after fifteen minutes

I didn't mean to pi$ you off, i was just posting my thoughts, and apologize if they offended you. Honestly I was just trying to help. Now that being said my personal plan, depending on what kind of Z-day happens, is no better than yours, its really way too simple and and full of "What If" gaps to be of any use to a large group, but might be enough to get me and my family by. Tell you what, if after the SHTF and I'm out in the middle of nowhere and i see a decked out train pass by PLEASE stop and pick my lazy a$ up. I'm sure you could use another rifle.
