Smartphone GPS
Aug 20 2010, 4:23 PM EDT
I got one of them fancy smartphones now. On Android you can get applications that just run the GPS. I would much rather use my phone as a GPS because it is light and can do a lot more things (like provide me with literature). So I was curious on what you guys thought about using Smartphones after Z-day. do you need service you run your smartphone GPS? Do you think they would cut off my GPS after the apocalypse?

I don't know how long the satelites themselves would retain the ability to transmit data to GPS devices, but I suspect the accuracy of the coordinates provided would deteriorate pretty rapidly without the usual army of ground crews providing remote maintance & monitoring.

Good maps and basic navigation. Do you find this valuable? |

You know, I actually bought myself a nice laminated highway map of MI a while back while I was house hunting with my ex, a huge bug was flying around the car and my ex used the map to push it out the window, with the map following suit, down the highway, while I was going 80.

With the government hogging the last remaining satelites, your GPS will act as nothing more than a compass. Maps my friend, are the way to go. Do you find this valuable? |

I'm the only person among my friends who actually keeps a road atlas in my car at all times. They've all got fancy GPS on their fancy phones, phones that need to be constantly charged...

Another issue is, the fact that almost every single phone GPS ever invented, gets the map data from the internet. Grab you phone right now, get the GPS running. It will probably tell you it's loading, or downloading something. Try viewing another area. Loading, loading, loading. If possible, check your internet data usage before and after. Almost every single freaking phone gets map data online. I had the same idea till I figured this out. Don't mean to necro-post, but anyone that see's this post will be that much smarter. You just learned from a fourteen year-old that actually has good grammar. :D Do you find this valuable? |
