"If people don't know how to identify mushrooms, and they don't have a specialist with them, how do you expect them to survive? Not to be mean, but I'm just saying."Well, I can't say it'll eliminate all of the potential harmful toxins in a poisonous mushroom, but you could try cooking them. Or, have someone eat a small quantity and observe them to test whether the particular shrooms are harmful or not. Do you find this valuable? |

"If people don't know how to identify mushrooms, and they don't have a specialist with them, how do you expect them to survive? Not to be mean, but I'm just saying."The big deal with mushrooms is there are only a few really dangerous mushrooms, like Amanitas, The Destroying Angel, deadly Cort, Poison Pie. Learn to Identify these. and learn the most common edible mushrooms in your area. Most mushrooms, while you can eat them are very unpalitable. I recommend for reading, the National Audubon Society Feild Guide to North American Mushrooms. If you are from another area of the world look for a simaler guide. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Living out In Oregon I personally like to go with liberty caps, kabenzies are nice too. Both give you that good body feeling, decent visuals, but I think the peak of Liberty caps are better.JK. No but seriously, I have a friend that used to pick a lot around the pacific northwest and he told me that if you don't know what your doing ask somebody that does, no book in the world is as informative as a good teacher.

I like mushrooms, I really do, but really, in a survival situation, it would make more sense to use mushrooms to find a rotting log for the teeming insect and worm life below which is nutrient rich and has more more easily indentifiable no-nos, because as far as mushrooms go, they have no caloric value, and why take the risk on accidentally misidentifying a toxic one as harmless and being too weak to fight of the Zs as they find you moaning with pain and sh!##ing yourself uncontrollably, and come down on you with broken jagged teeth and no mercy.but go ahead if you wanna try, i suppose. Wait, how do we expect to survive... without the low nutritional content of mushrooms? =*_*= I don't get the original question. In truth, maintainning a steady source of dairy, fruits and vegetables should be the biggest concern. Scavenging for protein (Make sure you get plenty of grain with those canned beans for complimentaries!) in the form of beans and meat would be the easiest food source available, maybe next to rice and flour. Hunting could also help. Foraging for or growing fruits and vegetables to keep yourself healthy would be far more important than surviving off of mushrooms I would think. I know people who are allergic to mushrooms and have gone twenty some years without them and are fine. I don't know of anyone who can make it for that long without any vitamins or minerals. I would avoid mushrooms completely myself. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
