What is the best food for the end of the world?
Aug 28 2010, 12:20 PM EDT
Whilst eating a can of Spaghetti-Os and meatballs I thought to myself, "Mmmm. This is awesome! If I had a few crates of these when the dead are eating the living I would be happier than peas! :D " Honestly I would just like to see what you guys think is the best food for the end of normal time. I choose my savory Spaghetti-Os because they're canned, taste good, have a HEAVY amount of calories, have a good serving of carbs and vegetable, It can be used as a weapon(aluminum as it is), and did I mention that it taste great? o.0? Obviously you need water and such to stay alive, but just tell me your food for the end of the world. Do you find this valuable?

We've actually touched base on this topic a few times. Personally, anything that provides adequate amounts of calories and energy for me to function is fine - food is just a means to an end. Post Z-Day, I'll take whatever I can get. That being said, if I had to prepare a meal now that would be my last before the end of days, I'd definitely crank it up to something higher-end than Spaghetti-O's.... no offense meant! Right this very second, I want an 18 ounce NY Strip steak, medium well done, seasoned black and white (salt and pepper), Spanish rice (heavy onion), a baked potato with all the fixings, some steamed broccoli with a little bit of Parmesan cheese and butter on it and a glass or two of Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc 2008 or 2007, preferably the latter. For desert, I want another steak. PS - if your mouth didn't water, you must be from Soviet Russia, where steak eats you! Do you find this valuable? |

Your last meal is EPIC by all means of the word, but my taste is built more on basic American flavor and my being fat I would have ordered EVERY thing on the Johnny Rockets menu and see how far I could go starting with an apple pie shake w/ some chili fries, a chili dog, a #12, and a side order of onion rings(I enjoy my classics ^^). I don't drink much(since i'm under age), but I wouldn't mind a Pina Coloda made with Brugal which is pretty much the best rum ever. I think after that I wouldn't care if a pack of ravenous human eaters came and ripped me to pieces. I'd have too big a sugar high to feel it anyway :D Do you find this valuable? |

I think i would eat some lasagna (love it) or sushibut for survival, maybe mainstay food rations (while surviving, the 2 day food rations are actually 1 day necessities) Do you find this valuable? |

RAMEN!!!1!1!... Ya, I like the stuff, and something that was originally military rations has to be at least slightly nutritious. Do you find this valuable? |

"RAMEN!!!1!1!Well obviously, MREs are good nutritious food. if you want non-perishible food that you can make yourself, pasta. wheat is easy to plant and harvest on a smaller scale and with a few specific animals around, you can make pasta, and nuts, herbs, and milk products can be made into pesto sauce. yum Do you find this valuable? |

A nice, juicy hamburger, with a pound of meat, a quarter of that in bacon. With a side of some steak-fries moderately salted and with Cajun seasoning. To drink, a nice tall, cold, glass of Dr Pepper straight from the tap. For desert, a Dr Pepper ice cream float.

I don't get the nature of the question. The best food to have before or after you've established yourself? My opinion: Steak, fresh vegetables, maybe a fresh fruit salad for dessert would be nice after spending all that time eating out of cans... Do you find this valuable? |

Ramen. I could go months on that stuff. Sure I probably will die, but at least I die satisfied.

Am I the only one who DOESN"T like Ramen?I just don't like soup in any form. Sure, I'll eat it, but it's not really a comfort food for me. For me, a Taylor Ham (Lol, anyone out of NJ probably has never heard of the stuff) egg and cheese on a bagel. MMMM.... I'm not a steak person, either. I'm a f**king heretic. Steak isn't everything. In the meat area, chicken is also good, as well as pork. As far as turkey goes, either give it to me in lunchmeat form or in a roast turkey dinner... And don't skimp on the damn gravy. Do you find this valuable? |

"Am I the only one who DOESN"T like Ramen?Yes you are you fecking weirdo! XD Ramen is a solid meal on its own. Add meat, veggies, and some other seasonings and you have a meal fit for a king. It ain't the college dormie food of choice for nothing. Max options + Minimal cost. Awdrenn: Look at the animals the food comes from. A chicken is small and can be divvied only so much before the portions become pointless. I'd say once you got to around 10 people your portions won't be worth the jaw work. Cow though...That's a hunk of meat. One carcass = a feast for at least 10. And that's with the cuts we eat now. We'd become downright ghoulish in a crisis. That sucker would be processed down to it's hollow bones. Do you find this valuable? |

Man, staying out and active long enough, a lot of things taste good... except whatever you've been eating for the past week. Variety is key, both psychologically and nutritionally.

Carnack - while no one would argue that finding a cow post-apoc is a bigger score than finding a chicken, if you are raising them, then the chicken rules. Look up the "feed conversion ratios" on those animals. Chickens give you a lot more food out for what you put in (in both meat and eggs). In general, the smaller something is, the more efficient. That is why people love the idea of apocalypse rabbits - easy to feed and breed like rabbits. Sad amounts of meat per animal, but sufficient. (You could also raise rodents, if you can bring yourself to eat mice or gerbils - and some argue for raising and eating bugs). Personally, two people holding a blanket down wind while someone walks above through a field will normally produce enough grasshoppers and crickets to feed a family for a day in less than an hour from spring to late fall. Yum. The best food for the end of the world is the food that you have or the food that you make. That pasta lives for 30 years is meaningless if you do not have a 30 year stockpile of it. Ramen has a ten day life span when you only have ten. Fresh summer squash, however, has a lifespan of FOREVER, as it is easy to grow, care, harvest, and replant (the seeds can live dry for years - so even a lost crop is not the end). The same can be said of tomatoes, pumpkins, melons, and the like. Of course, perrinials (fruit and nut trees, grapevines, etc) also have an eternal lifespan (and some, like apples, have a very long shelf life as well). Do you find this valuable? |

If you plan on buying instant noodles, make sure it's the cup noodle kind with flavoring packets and vegetables/meat. You don't want to end up malnourished because you've got nothing but noodles.
