The midwest - safest place to survive zombies?
Aug 28 2010, 2:19 PM EDT | Post edited: Aug 28 2010, 2:19 PM EDT
I am going off of MachineGunGuy's post from today where he suggested that the desert might be the safest place. For obvious reasons mainly do to survivability in hard climates it would certainly not be the perefect spot by any means.

My response is the midwest, and here are some reasons why:

1) Flat ground - similar to some deserts, although deserts have more drastic elevation changes in them than the midwest does for sure. You can see for miles in most of the midwest.

2) Sustainability - known as the bread basket of the U.S. and is nearly all cultivated and irrigated.

3) Major cities - within traveling distance but not so close together like the east or west coast tends to have. This will provide needed areas to find supplies and raid when necessary.

4) Already very good locations to fall back to. If you have seen some of the farms out there you know they could be perfect. You could easily fortify a barn and series of buildings on a farm to keep zeds and raiders out and stay nice and safe inside all while living fairly well. Post yourself on top of a good size silo and you could see for amazing distances and with the right weapons take corrective actions at a distance where you would not need to worry about stinking rotting twice dead corpses. A barn can be sealed up fairly well and if you sleep on a loft in the barn you can pull up the ladder for added security.

5) Resourses - Let's hope that whatever infects the poor humans does not effect animals. If this is the case there are huge numbers of livestock all around. Keep a couple chickens for eggs, a goat or two for milk, and eat the rest. The ground is extremely fertile and you could grow crops easier than most other locations in the states (hence why it is already farmland). Irrigation is in place already to water crops and this could be utilized for growing your own, and also for your steady supply of fresh water.

6) Climate - good average rainfall a year which is helpful. Warm summers that are not so hot you want to die as soon as you get outside (not so sure that air conditioners will be up and running anymore!). Also if you really think about the whole argument about going north to have zombies freeze this would only work if they are undead zombies (no longer warm blooded). If we were so lucky that this was the case I would think that zombies would begin to freeze to the point of not being able to move without ripping themselves apart within a week or two of constant below freezing temps which the midwest certainly has as well.

7) Sustainable - much of the farms in the midwest have a large amount of sustainable energy. Wind and solar power is certainly used on a regular basis which will be the most effective way of keeping the luxury of electricity in a post apacolyptic world IMO. If it is already there and set up, you dont have to find it or fabricate it.

I am sure there are more postive and negatives thoughts about this general location but that is why I am throwing it out there. Let me know what you guys think.

Also please forgive the grammer mistakes in there I am pretty much typing this as it comes to my mind and I am about to crash out for the night. Looking forward to seeing the responses

Safest place to be when zombies arrive: right behind me.

LOL not really. There are people far more apt to survive than me.

Anyway, yeah, the midwest is a good place. Much easier to survive in than the desert.
Just get used to eating corn :P

Quick question... Do any of you live in the Midwest?
The reason I ask is because I'm already here, and think you are missing some valuable points about the area you're thinking of.

1) Experienced farmers- not only do they know how to grow crops but the average farmer can also weld, fix any engine he owns with little more than duct tape and bailing wire if need be, butcher anything that is valuable as a food source within 100 miles of their land, owns several guns, and can use them all effectively, and already has a survivalist attitude.

2) Generally speaking, at least for Kansas, as long as you aren't too weird looking, farmers don't mind having extra hands around to do work that they would struggle to complete alone.

3) Know the land that they own and the land surrounding it from a lifetime of working it, and moving through it.

4) Already have large stores of food and supplies built up against being flooded or snowed in/loss of power, which often lasts for weeks when it happens.

No I am very east coast. My fiance and best friend live in Illinois though so I was thinking about the area in relation to them. Your points are great additions. The more I think about it the more I think it is indeed the best place to be. EC9000's mentioning the Rockies is not a bad idea either but I think I can come up with more negatives to mountains then positives about the plains.

Yeah, and I love the Midwest. I won't move unless I have to. Most of the people I know don't have massive supplies, but the ground where I live, is some of the richest, blackest soil I have ever seen. MiracleGrow ain't got nothin on it. : )

At least two of my friends are farmer's kids or nephews and know a heckuva lot about farming. My first friend knows more about growing, and the other is in 4-H and his mother is the leader, and he knows A LOT about cattle and cattle dieases. But only the first one own guns. But with them and a few other friends, we can take care of ourselves for a few weeks at the least.

The midwest would be great... if you could put up with the people! =^_~=

I get the feeling that any settlement made there wouldn't get along with me well, "forcing" me and my band of merry men to become raiders.. =^___^;;=

Yeah, that'll be my excuse...

People seem to have forgotten about the dust bowl, without modern farming practices most of the Midwest will dry up, and without plants to keep the soil from being blown by the wind we're going to have huge dust clouds. Do you find this valuable?

Oh yeah, good point. I'm not sure if modern buildings can withstand duststorms effectively.
EDIT: Besides that, the place would be likely unlivable.

there was a drought, and farmers were growing in lands that we'rent very good for farming. on top of that they would sink their plows as deep as they could.

the dustbowl didnt jsut happen.
