Ever show some of your guns, ammo, survival food and supplies to a neighbor, friend, relative, co-worker, etc. and hear; "Well I know where I'm going to go if we ever get invaded," sound familier? THEY MEAN YOUR HOUSE! For you younger guys that think you were the first to hear that let me tell you that people have been telling me that ever since I showed someone my AR-15 SP1 back in the late 1970's. Back then the saying went like this "I know where I'm going when the Russians invade." Funny how everyone, no matter where they are from in the U.S., are wired exactly the same and almost the exact same comment comes out of their mouth. My response now is that I only have enough supplies for my immediate family and if they would have not bought that 3rd big screen TV that they "needed" they would have enough money for food for 3 months, rifle, etc. Funny how people that don't prepare for anything always feel entitled to whatever their prepared friends have. And that's the reason for this post - I want to hear what your thoughts are after watching this episode of the Twilight Zone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ei7Gr-0uNU entitled "The Shelter" (in three parts, only about 22 minutes). Rod Serling had probably the best understanding of the human condition, more than almost any director/writer in Hollywood. Maybe what you will see will be exactly what your "freinds" will do to you when the zombies come! Some people's "plans" are to become part of yours. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

hell, I'm already planning for up to 200 people, with a minimum of 10, only 2 others are my family. I live in a small town, and most peoples plans, before talking to me, have been the typical "loot a grocery store" or "raiod a gun shop" style plans. I don't see it as a bad thing necesarrily, but it is nonetheless something to be planned for, just in case.

That's why I'm only going to tell my friends if they agree that they will only tell their immediate family should something happen. Because if I let his friends know, they will tell his family and friends and those people will tell everyone in the damn county and their dog, and it would be a giant clusterf**k.Hell, my friend said "I'm going to your house if the zombies come." And I didn't even have a damn gun in the house back then! He saw that I had a school pack filled with camping gear and a crowbar and that was enough to illicit the reaction the OP described. I'm going to watch that episode, but I'll bet that the above is pretty much the sypnosis of it. Still going to enjoy, though. Do you find this valuable? |

Without a doubt. Grasshoppers will want the ants to feed them through the winter.

Have they prepared? Regarding looting the local gun shop, if I had one it would be cleared out by me way before the sheeple decided that what they were watching on TV news is real plus anyone that even would have looked a little suspicious while I'm emptying my shop would be a strong candidate for lead poisioning. Do you think that the thieves that just looted a gun/grocery store are going to leave you alone when they run out of food and you are sitting on 10 cases of MREs? Maybe I misunderstood but are you inviting these people to your place as part of your 200? Let's stick with the original post - PLEASE WATCH THE TWILIGHT ZONE EPISODE " THE SHELTER" and respond with comments. Do you find this valuable? |

Oh yeah. The shelter. I watched that a while ago. They all thought building the bomb bunker was crazy, until a possible bombing was annoucned. Then everyone begged the guy to let them in his bunker. I have that issue. Everyone knows I'm a gun enthusiast. Furthermore that guns are in my possesion. Plus, they know I'm a survivalist. So, all the families in the community are going to be coming up banging to my door wanting all the canned food/shelter I have. I have no idea what to do. Do you find this valuable? |

"Oh yeah. The shelter. I watched that a while ago. They all thought building the bomb bunker was crazy, until a possible bombing was annoucned. Then everyone begged the guy to let them in his bunker.Yep. Many have that problem. The great survial site SurvivalBlog.com has many articles about getting your neighbors involved in a plan, etc. which is the advice from the wesite's owner James W. Rawles - I agree with him on most things except that one. It is said in buisiness that for every unhappy customer you have, 200 will be turned off by your business because that one customer's bad mouthing of the service they got from you will reach 200 people. With the internet and the fact that gossiping seems to have become an American "sport" as popular as football these days - your info will be on the street in no time if you talk to a neighbor even IF they agree with you. I have friends that I have talked about disaster preparedness for many years and even though they have done some preparing, they would not make it past 3 weeks and would not survive any serious disaster like a dirty bomb, biological outbreak, economic collapse, nuke, or zombie invasion - they have too many important things to pay for like the boat payment, multiple club fees, keeping up with the Joneses, etc. A guy told me something along time ago, he said "You know what will get you into more trouble than anything else in your whole life? Its your own mouth." The Bible also has a verse, goes something like this: "Don't cast your pearls unto swine." In other words, don't waste your time giving away your good information to people that are too stupid to listen. Do you find this valuable? |

A few thing you can put in your post:1) What did you think of the episode? 2) Describe some or all of the charectors and how/why they reacted in the way they did? 3) What did you think about how fast the situation deteriorated? 4) Who did you empathize with? The bomb shelter owner or the neighbors? 5) One neighbor sort of had his head on straight, what did you think about the scene when he stated to another neighbor "Oh, so this is our shelter?" 5) Did you see anyone in the film that resembles someone in your life? etc. Do you find this valuable? |

That's fine. My plan is rather...hostile to people who don't want to do anything. Hell a lot of people here wouldn't be keen on it.Honestly though it doesn't matter. Everyone likes to show off that new bit of kit they bought and since a crisis is not an immediate concern no point going into lockdown mode. I saw the episode and honestly I say whatever. Yeeeesh... "Damages? I don't know if any of us know what those damages are."I can tell you right now I'm none of these people. The situation doesn't apply to my preparedness. If I *Had* a shelter I'd make sure the only people who knew about it would be the ones I deem useful. Or Anne Hathaway. As it stands now plenty of people call me "The Zombie Nut" & I openly talk about my Uber-Kewl shizzle... One person told me "I know where I'm going when SHTF". I told him the only reason he should show up at my door is if he wanted a quick death. My current best friend (Total Hottie) laughed at that. I pointed to her & said "However... YOU are welcome. Bring a change of cloths & a box of condoms & we'll be set." Hey, we're going to blast through the reading materials eventually. She already knows how to field strip "Elysia"... ^looks around^ What? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Bring a change of cloths & a box of condoms & we'll be set"Might as well just say "If the apocalypse comes, if you want to live you will be used for breeding." Your game needs to be more subtle. Do you find this valuable? |

Number one rule of fight club is.....There are no good reasons to tell neighbors and others about your preps and guns so why would you? I have a neighbor up the road that had an FFL and a small on line gun bussiness. He wears a pistol while mowing the grass or out in the yard and has security cameras set up outside his house. Other neighbors think of him as strange Other day I'm at my local post office where they know me well (well sort of !) and they got talking about 2012 and the end of the world. Couple post office guys got talking about my neighbor and about how they would head over there because they know he has guns and lots of supplies I told them I had an old shotgun in the closet and some canned beans so I'm all set and we had a good laugh Do you find this valuable? |
