Survival Download
Aug 31 2010, 10:42 PM EDT | Post edited: Aug 31 2010, 10:42 PM EDT
I have been thinking about this for a while, and just decided to put it out there.

Should the apoc. happen, I would obviously assume the internet would be one of the first things to go. True or no?
If so - there is a wealth of information here on this site. As soon as we loose acess to this incredible site, we loose a lot of tools to survive.

My first solution to this is: Collect the pages under the Survival Guide section, as well as a few very well layed out plans, and put them together in a file. Put up a link to this collective file for all memebers to download - the idea being that, once the internet goes down, the ZSDW member would go into his/her computer, open this file, and print it (We have a generator, so we will have electricity - more than enough to do some printing).

For me, at least, it would be very difficult to have a large stack of papers stored somewhere in the house, and the papers would go out of date in a short time. However, on the site, we can still do our research/studying, not lug around a book, and keep up to date. All it would take is an occasional updating of the linked file.

So what do you all think?

While it is a great idea to compile our important info into a single update-able item, it is very wishful thinking to assume that you will ever have access to a computer once TSHTF, phones are a different question, the growing market of smartphones allows for a variety of formats available to distribute information, a simple PDF file would suffice

most people with higher end phones have extra batteries/car chargers/ect and its alot easier to carry than a computer, even a laptop, which can weigh more then 9 pounds at times (mine weighs 8.6 pounds)

and since PDF's are cross platform and easy to manage that is where my vote lays

I dont know much about computers and such, so whatever format would work best, Im all for it.

Pff. Me having a computer after the SHTF is a million times more likely than me having a smart phone before the SHTF.......

I have considered printing out pages of all kinds of this (plant identification, farming techniques, etc) my thought was to fill a filing cabinet with different folders. I guess just keeping them on the computer and printing them at SHTF time might be possible.

However, if you are trying to hide in your house and be quiet, no doubt that time will be about 2 seconds after you hit "print all" and "cancel printing" is never fast enough

Write things down as a part of your BOB.
Take a good notebook that is the size you are comfortable with carrying around with you and fill it with information you think is important. Your own condensed note can contain more information than any article would because you use as much text as you need to understand it. Whenever you want blueprints or images you print them and put them in the book or glue them in.

There are at least a couple people on here who plan on taking a hard drive or flash drive filled with info they consider important with them. Wherever they are, if they can get a working computer and some electricity they'll have a bunch of vital knowledge at their disposal. Even a relatively small flash drive can hold tons and tons of documents and pictures. Do you find this valuable?

Dont get me wrong, I hope Im not coming across as lazy - I actually have a notebook Ive been carrying around filled with all sorts of notes, sketches, facts, and info that deal with my plan and long term survival. At the moment Im finding it hard to do much without the resources available through the computer though.

Speed, now that you mention it, I may have to do that. Geez, why not? A flashdrive would hardly take any space.... I wouldnt count on using it, but say it proves useful, suddenly the group is better off than we had planned for.

And ok, I already have been printing out pages, but I'll take that as the main plan of attack and keep going with it.

I still think a single downloadable file containing a compilation of the most important information on this site is a great idea.

While we're at it, why not combine these two ideas? Download the file, put it on a flashdrive to carry around with you without taking up space and print the parts that you feel will be most immediately relevant to you after the SHTF so that you can keep them in your BOB for ready access. That way you can leave the long term stuff on the drive, and print it later (presuming that you've arranged in advance to have access to your computer, printer and power later).
