So there's a lot of talk about melee weapons lately, and for good reason: for many it is the only option. Along with all this talk has come alot of controversy, so I decided this might help people get their opinions and experiences about weapons out there. So out of all of these weapon types, which is the best all around(shambler killing, rager killing, people killing, tool multi funtion, weight, bulk, reliability ect.) Oh, and yes, I understand shields aren't on here, because shields would make things unfair(shields are just too awesome). -Swords: most people should know what a sword is, but knives are in this group as well. -Axes: the eternal rival of the sword, halberds are in this group as well. -Clubs: sticks, stones, anything to break your bones, including warhammers, crowbars, maces, hammers, ect. -Spears: anything designed mainly for stabbing, includes unbladed daggers, pikes, and arrows without bows. -Punching weapons: brass knuckles, gauntlets, katars, ect. I know this might seem unoriginal to some, but I think it needed to be posted. Also, if you have any past experiences that changed your opinion, I'd love to hear about them. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"i understand you're already doing one for melee weapons, but i'm talking about the categories."Oh, okay. I understand. Are hatchets in the same group as axes? If so, axes. Do you find this valuable? |

Axxxxeeeessssssssss!!! =^_______^=Lumber, hatchets, nordic boat makers with hammer heads, Pole axes, even that ridiculous five foot long, 12 pound double bit pole-axe from starfire swords that's in my basement! =^____^= Do so much tissue damage it doesn't matter how you hit the slow moving targets! That would be too heavy for taking scavenging and be better for a quiet base defense though =*_*= But yeah, axes! =^___^= Do you find this valuable? |

Spears are the best man killer to date. At least when you have room for them.Swords are good if you know what you're doing. Axes are a low skill, high kill kinda weapon. Punching weapons should only be used if you're in very tight quarters or in prison. Clubs are about the same as axes in how you use them, though the result is slightly more blunt (excuse the pun). Also, I'd like to point out that you have many weapons in very odd categories... Do you find this valuable? |

I'll go for spears, some of them have a long range (compared to other melee weapons) so they are kinda safer while killing zombies, I don't want to go killing zombies with a hammer, it's just too close

"I'll go for spears, some of them have a long range (compared to other melee weapons) so they are kinda safer while killing zombies, I don't want to go killing zombies with a hammer, it's just too close"then if they get impaled around their mid section but ignore the pain and keep coming, you can stab them with the unbladed dagger. spears, I have a roman type spear (but it's all rusted and in dis-repair so it's not uch of a weapon) and when you hold it you can understand why the civilisation that made this weapon even better (added the metal and stuff) lasted so well.

"yep, but a spear is a no no if the zombies are headshot zombies"Well, if they ain't headshot zombies, they're most likely ragers. It'd been hard to hit something that fast. Do you find this valuable? |

the wonderful thing about long weapons (that include spears) is keeping your opponent Out-Of-Arms-Reach! and I cannot see why so many guys on this forum would chose a knife over a weapon that can do that small thing.

"yea, right??? you just have to make a spear and put something to keep the zombie out of reach (if the zombie doesn't die, then it could keep walking even with a spear nailed on it) something like this: O -----------------||---> X YOU....SPEAR....ZOMBIE or a trident would be useful too Do you find this valuable? |

You could have trepanned it before it got to grabbing distance with a Zulu Assagi with its leaf shaped blade. Decapitated it with a Halberd. Split it from head to groin with a podao. . . All before it got close enough to touch you, let alone bite

I personally love spears. =^__^= I actually specialize almost exclusively in the things for when it comes to melee weapons sparring with my best friend. (wooden [but weighted correctly] replicas only!) They are truly amazing weapons and its easy to see why every culture (at least just about every culture) has invented them and stood by them throughout the metallurgical advances. =^_^=So don't get me wrong but I would be terrified to have only a spear against zombies. =*_*= A thick, stout but not exactly bladed spear head would easily pierce the skull and probably be great for out in the open during the daylight hours. A pitchfork or some such would be wonderful for pinning a zombie, in the same conditions. Some spears would be better for zombie killing than others but all spears are pretty much limited to being used out in the open making them good for base defense and maybe traveling out in the open if you can find a zombie free shelter during the night but they would be horrible for scavenging. =*_*= When the shops are stripped bare of food and you have to move house to house to secure your location and find out where all that food went, you would need something that could be used at a grappling range or at a nice distance. I choose the axe for this. You can punch with one hand and use the other to lever the punch forward for a nice, close-in face crushing attack. =^_^= Or you can start up your swing with both hands then let go with one and swing with your side facing the zombie to get your maximum range. That range versatility is one of the things that I think would be most important during battles inside of a building or thick forest. =^_^= Do you find this valuable? |

I would use either a crowbar or baseball bat. Chainsaw would be good, but weighs too much and requires fuel.

Two things I've considered for Zombie weapons on the cheap. A shovel, better yet one that is pounded or is flat and sharpened. Or a pick axe, not one of those 5 pound jobs, but a 2.5 pound one. Held like a spear, it could push back zombies while swinging side to side.
