This is a good list, but there is NO WAY that I'm going to find a $7 hatchet here. There are no HF Stores locally (I don't know if they even have them in Canada), and the cheapest one I've been able to find other than that is $14. I'll have to work something out about this one.I've already got the flashlights (they were in the bag from last month) and gloves will be no problem. As for the Scrounged Items: Cargo Strap (don't have any of these, and wouldn't even know where to go to look)(suggestions?) 8x BK Resturant Napkins (done) Large pill vial (done) 4x wire ties (whole spool of tie wire, done) safety pin (done) extra bottle caps (done) pencil (and pens, done) paper clips (done) push pin (done) hair band (don't have this yet, but how would we use it anyway?) 1 out of 1 found this valuable. (And posted the website on the page.) Getting a decent one for $14 is good price too and I'd say go for it, especially if you've already got a flashlight. Yes, it's over our target price, but sometimes you have to "bite the bullet" and grab what you can - when you can. Cargo Straps - watch for them on the side of the road. LOL! Yeah, I see pieces of those yellow straps all the time. Just be careful stopping to pick them up : ) 3 feet is more than enough - probably less when I actually measure what I used. More on the sheath later. Hair Band - if you're a long haired person (guy or girl) something in your kit to tie your hair back out of your way is helpful. It's a small thing, but something that's a major frustration that is easily fixed without a hassle. You could substitute something else or omit if you're a "shorty". 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Silly me, it's for tying hair. Who'da thunk it? Actually, I do have a whole bag of scrap leather laces around somewhere that would be great for this among many other things. I hadn't thought about them before, but now I guess I'll add those too. Do you find this valuable? |

I've posted some pictures of the Cargo Strap sheath so you can see what I have in mind. I have another one I will work on this weekend - a sheath II version of the one I show.

Picked up a tool like this http://www.approvedgasmasks.com/axe-tool.htm at a local flea market for $2, picked up 10 of them. Combines a hatchet or ax, hammer, prybar and a nail-puller. Also got 10 of these from BudK http://budk.com/Knives/Tactical-Warrior-Neck-Knife and these http://budk.com/Knives/Wahoo-Killer-Fillet-Knife Stocking small caches around my area, responsible for offices in three corners of the state, plus several in the center. Hundred plus miles between locations. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Picked up a tool like thisNice job, Byates! I like the axe-tool. Gonna look around for one of those. The tactical warrior neck knife is a good one too. I have one like the from Smith & Wesson knives that I have strapped to my .22LR/.410 Springfield M6 Scout Rifle. That Wahoo knife looks alot like the Frost Mora knives, so if it's anything like that - it's work great! Do you find this valuable? |

Have a couple of the S&W knives, the warrior is near their quality. Like the blade shape on the S&W better, got mine her: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.7606 buy 3 and get them for $3.96 each. Some other stuff on the site too. Do you find this valuable? |

First off this is a great Idea it is helping me improve my Bugout bag all the time and has got me thinking about cheap subitutes for expensive problems.Moving on... Its winter here so I started packing a winter kit (an Idea I had for a while) Into a large canvas swag Purchased: Tarp, Duct tape (and I grabed some old nylon rope from the shed) $2.50 For shelter building A Thick wool jumper and beanie (Op shop) $5 and folowing your advice I looked for a Hatchet to no avail So I opted for a pair lawn mower blade ($5) Scavanged items 10 Condoms (School Nurse) water containners, firestarting, waterproofing, compression bandages ect Safty pins, Needles and threads. A pocket sodoku book and a pen An old Shapie A bansaw blade, poprivets and some PVC to make a swiss style pocket knife. Large grabage bags (for ponchos and shelter building) A large waterproof jacket, Stockman socks and Woolen gloves. This is all going into a large Swag which kinda defeats the purpose of a bargin kit-and once agian alot of these items were just lying around the house although I didnt Pay for them, so I'd still call them free/Scavanged Do you find this valuable? |

"Purchased:Twisty type is what I grabbed. They can be striped to repair eyeglasses that lose a screw or a button. Funny, originally, I had purchased a little $2 mini-saw for this month's kit when I ran into the HF sale. So.......you'll be seeing that NEXT month! Saws are so much easier to use sometimes than a hatchet or axe, that I ALMOST didn't buy the hatchet. Do you find this valuable? |

I may yet still regret not getting the mag lite! Do you find this valuable? |

"Check the counters of your local convienience and auto parts stores"That's the spirit FW! Yeah, this entire exercise is to get you looking at items you run across daily to fill in your survival kit. Yes, these flashlights are NO mag lite, but I wanted some thing LED and cheap to daily use lighting. Do you find this valuable? |

Sorry for the necropost on this one, but I just thought of another great item to add to a murphy kit, and it's cheap too. It won't fit in the pill bottle, but a pack of cable zip ties are awesomely handy. You can get a pack of like 50 or 60 of them for a buck and I can't count the number of times I've used them to secure something or jury rig some repair.
