which is better

I'm wondering if a longer barrel is better than a shorter one. On a handgun, rifle, or shotgun. I don't own guns cause im a minor, so i'm wondering.

There is a legal limit of 16 inches for how short a barrel on a rifle or shotgun can be. That's a pretty mid-range length. Generally it comes down to ballistics versus handling. That is, longer hypothetically means better accuracy and stopping power, but at the price of an easy handling gun. After a certain length, it stops being advantageous though, so you don't see barrels longer than thirty inches or so on small arms.

As far as for handling, generally a shorter barrel is better. You tend to hang them up a lot less. The problem is, as you shorten a barrel you generally loose velocity on the cartridges it is chambered for. Which is not always horrible, but it is a deathknell for some cartridges that rely on high velocities for bullet performance. Unless you have handloaded ( most people dont) taking into account the shorter barrel, you will be stuck with commercial loads, whose performance figures are generally based out of longer barrels , usually around...6"+ for sidearms..24"+ for rifles...28" for Shotguns.
