Hi all,

This is the 3rd installment of the $10x12 Survival Kit project.

This month's purchases are back to basic survival gear.

Here's the list of purchased items:

1-5 Tool $3.00
Knife Sharpener $1.56
15# Fishing Line (300 yds) $2.00
Fishing Hooks (10 #8 Brass) $1.50
Jr Hacksaw $2.00

Scrounged item this month is basically to find a temporary container for your kit to keep everything together. This ISN'T the final "carrier" for your kit - just one to keep things together till we get to that point.

Practice Project this month is "trigger time"! Get out and practice shooting!

I hope you'll join me in discussing these this month.

Step 1: Take anything that has cardboard.

Step 2: Cut out a square about 4" on all sides.

Step 3: Cut a notch on two opposite sides.

Step 4: Poke a hole in the center.

Step 5: Tie fishing line into the center hole and notch, and wind fishing line into the two notches.

Step 6: Poke fishing hooks into the edge of the cardboard.

Step 7: ????

Step 8: Profit!

I have the same orange multi tool. I agree the flint striker is ridiculously small. I got mine for $2.95 on ebay, so it's definitely still worth it. Do you find this valuable?

Okay this months list makes me very happy. Almost everything on this list has already been added to the bag.

5-in-1 Tool - Already got it
Knife Sharpener - The only thing I don't have
15# Fishing Line (300 yds) - Already got it, wrapped around a screwdriver/wrench combo tool
Fishing Hooks (10 #8 Brass) - already got these too
Jr Hacksaw - don't have this, but I do have a folding camp saw
cardboard box - started my kit in a leftover backpack right from day one.

As for the shooting, I don't own a firearm so, for now at least, that part's unfortunately out.

Not true, sir White Knight : )

You can still rent one at most indoor ranges.

Cost is about $10 each for an hour plus ammo. It's really a good way to practice even if you don't own one.

check it out!

I vote against the knife sharpener. Have tried several, ceramic, metal disk, and metal rods forming a V shape sharpening area. The angle they use doesn't seem to work for me, just faster and easier to use a stone or ceramic rod I salvaged from an industrial bulb.

Sandpaper on a wood block is good for sharpening and cheap.

I'm quite the same chefs should be the only people using those things, Ive seen people wear half decent knifes down to nubs using those things.

It is a common misconception that those things are the same as stones when really you should be using them every few days.

Allot of people you use them for once a month then try to get a razor edge, this can take them hours.

For the same money I managed to pick up a fine grain pocket stone out of the bargain bin at my local hardware place probably the best purchase I've ever made.

Unfortunately this is not the case here. I have been in contact with the local Rod-and-Gun Club (the only shooting range in my area) and while they are technically "open to the public", they do not offer public rentals. Visitors are required to bring their own firearms and ammo.

Although, for what it's worth, I did finally manage to get the hatchet from last month. It was $7.99 at my local hardware store (cheapest I could find). Taxes and all, it still took up all of my september budget so I may have gone a little over by the time I include the cost of the work gloves, but only by about 50-75 cents.

I had wondered about these sharpeners.

Perhaps I will get a pocket stone in its stead as well.

Just a cautionary note concerning the 5-in-1 tool.

The signal mirror is glued into the inside of the cap, which is good because you won't be as likely to lose it, but the cap itself makes it difficult to operate as a signaling device. When I tried to get the mirror to reflect a light spot, I found that I had to be pointing the mirror almost directly at the light source or else the edges of the cap itself overshadowed the teeny, tiny mirror inside.

This may not prevent it from being used in an emergency, but only if the aircraft or ship or whatever it is that you are trying to signal is in line with the sun, or at not to great an angle from the sun. If it is a little further away from that line, though, you may not be able to get a reflection from this mirror. It might be possible to pry the mirror out of the cap, but I think you'd be more likely to break the mirror trying.

This may be something to bear in mind if you ever find yourself in a situation where you need to use it.

I'm new to this site, but I've liked a lot of what I've seen, even if the apocolyptic event is something other than zombies.

With that said, I like the idea that I think you are going for with this monthly "purchase." It seems that the idea is to slowly build up your survival gear in a way that is not too hard-hitting on the pocketbook. Great idea.

What is the 5-in-1 tool that was referenced? A Google search revealed a lot of different tools, most of which didn't seem helpful for this purpose.

Couple of good points here from RU & Bytes...

Sharpening a blade BEFORE it really needs it IS a problem - wait till you're having trouble cutting or it's hard to cut - then sharpen it.

Also, as this whole project i about discussing alternatives to each piece...stones, rods, et all are ALL usable for sharpening.

What continiously surprises me is that I have found is the number of people that have NEVER sharpened a knife. If you have, then you're ahead of the curve, but the majority of people don't sharpen them or have someone else do it - kinda like baiting your fish hook yourself. What I find it that this type of sharpener is usable by more people than any other kind available.

I agree it's not the best, but the value of having SOMETHING to sharpen your blade with whether it's a stone, rod or other IS the important part.

OK I purchased a 1-5 at Gander Mts. for $3.95 so I got ripped off there.
I own a knife sharpener.
I have fishing line.
Got #8s.
Jr. Hacksaw at Tractor Supply for $3.00

I store my fishing hooks in a Altoid can w/ fishing line wrapped around.

I'll use a plastic coffee can to hold everything.

Had a friend give me 3 empty dip cans. They're handy little containers for holding lots of stuff.

wow I'm surprised i never really saw this..
Well, I'ma try to get into this 10X12 survival kit.

I think i have everything for this month(gonna go back and work on the other months over time)

I also have this zipper case.. its waterproof to my knowledge, was inexpensive, and I already keep a few 'survival' things in it.
so.. temporary container, but its more suited to being a mini medkit

'Rattler kinda reminded me too that if you already have some item similar that you prefer to the ones I'm listing that month, you don't actually have to buy them to include them in your 10x12 kit : )

Sometimes having your necessary gear organized in a kit is best and that's pretty much the design for this project anyway.

So if you've already got it - bonus! I figure 'Rattler has +$3.00 in the bank if he wants to use it somewhere else : ))
