Problem one.

A survival plan depends on how fast these creatures spread. If they just show up at the door like Jehovah Witnesses, your plan becomes hold out here. I imagine cities will get bad fast, but rural areas will handle it better. I also imagine a state of civil emergency being declared, probably as the first cities suffer the outbreak. I'll probably get called up with my guard unit to help control the situation, we'll probably be fortifying shelters for first responders. Do you find this valuable?

And because we don't know how fast or in what manner it will spread, we try to prepare for the worst. Do you find this valuable?

Well most plans I read involve some bugging in at first. Then when that panic subsides the bug out plan will be in effect. Or looking for the signs of chaos and bugging out then, much sooner than the general public. Do you find this valuable?

Problem two.
Your going to need a good spot to hold up. If you can find a heavily built, fall-out shelter type of structure that is fairly secluded, and stockpile some food, your set!
My primary bug out shelter will probably be Chickamauga Dam and powerhouse, or possibly Racoon Mountain Hydro-electric facility. Both are very secure with limited access. Both have river access so water evacuation is possible.

There's really two ways Z-Day can go:

1. The disease is asymptomatic, allowing for large numbers of people to be unknowingly infected. This would be aided by the virus being able to survive in the water, infecting the water supplies, or being transported by rats and insects much like the Black Death. This results in a massive amount of people across a large area suddenly turning at once, which is much more difficult to counter.

2. The diease almost instantly infects and turns the victim. This would be a hell of a lot easier to counter, because as long as quarantine can be properly set up you can quickly eradicate the infected and set up barriers. Not to mention that unless a huge amount of zombies all appear at once, it's very possible that the first few zombies will be killed by civilians. It helps that modern pop culture has ingrained the "shoot them in the head" trope into our psyche so much that we won't act like the genre blind protagonists of zombie films ineffectively putting round after round into the chest or threatening the zombie with mace.

Our ability to not be characters in a movie keeps us prepared.
