Never Ending Nightmares
Nov 4 2010, 9:12 AM EDT
Ok, so pretty much every night since I have had my daughter I have zombie nightmares. I had them before her but they were maybe once a week. Now I find myself in the day sometimes making escape plans. Like when I take her on walks through the park and stuff like that.. The dreams are pretty much the same there is an outbreak and my husband is stuck on base. They won't let him leave cause they need everyone to shoot. I have to get me and my daughter to base which is 45 min away and some how we make it. The marine corps can't keep the zombies off base though so we end up in a fire watch tower .My husband and some others sawed off the ladder so that they couldn't climb up but there is also no way to get my daughter down safely if we need to leave. We are stuck there forever and some of the others start going crazy talking about leaving and fighting them off when there are thousands of zombies everywhere. I end up having to shoot, which I totally suck at. Just as I begin to shoot I wake up. Sometimes they last longer and I ended up dead; I get bit and kill myself to protect my husband and daughter, sometimes we survive in an empty world but either way is still scary as hell. On top of that my little sis decided to inform me that she believes in 2012 there will be a zombie apcolypse which only adds to my fear. It's horrible I'm so scared of them that I won't live near a cemetery and my heart races when we drive past them.

Tough. I used to have nightmares too. You just have to realise that something like zombies probably won't happen. Do you find this valuable? |

Doesn't work that way, EC.Anywho, the frequency and nature of the nightmares sounds like a condition called postpartum depression. It's a "coverall term" for the psychological shifts that sometimes happen just before and for a while after childbirth; doesn't necessarily mean you're depressed. Have you told a medical professional about the nightmares and coimetrophobia (fear of cemeteries)? They might be able to help you completely do away with them. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Actually, the end of the world is not going to be on 2012, like the Mayans predicted. It could be 50+ years off, or could have already happened.Links-a-lot : http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/mayan-calendars-2012-doomsday-prophecy-wrong/story?id=11926347 Do you find this valuable? |

"Doesn't work that way, EC.It does for me... well my nightmares aren't as suvere It sounds like this could be a "disorder." Not like crazy or anything like that, but Drew is right, this sounds quite serious. It seems the safety of you and your loved ones is the main focus in these nightmares. Do you find this valuable? |

Have you talked this over with your husband? Drewblet might have hit the nail on the head. In any case there's probably an underlying issue you need to confront (i.e. the scary and overwhelming demands of being a military wife). If you let him know this has become a serious concern for you, your husband will probably be able to help you figure out the heart of the problem.

Thanks everyone so much for the insight. I'm actually on anxiety meds a kind I have never been on before and I talked to my doctor yesterday, he said it's a side effect, then he prescribed me sleeping pills. Think it's kinda funny how something that is supposed to relieve your stress gives you nightmares. Anyways we will see how this goes and SKGINGERKID I will definetly try to think of the charmin bears next nightmare :)

What are you depressed about? Eh, doesn't really matter. If the sleeping pills work, you should be fine. Do you find this valuable? |

I don't think it's depression the doctor just said I have a high anxiety level, to the point of anxiety attack level. It's genetic, everyone in my family has it including my little sis but she's the opposite of me she takes her anxiety out in violence on people, while I usually take it out on my phone or cry lol Thanks btw :)

Be careful who you discuss this with. I have voiced my zombie concerns with my wife and she is convinced that if i were to tell a psychiatrist about it that i would be locked up and they would throw away the key. I'm not saying your crazy cause if i said that then i would be admitting that i myself am crazy and i don't believe that to be true. A little paranoid yes but surely not crazy. What i'm saying is that not everyone is as open to the possibility of any kind of disaster happening let alone one of the zombie nature. I believe that someone with a degree who in their mind thinks that a piece of paper entitles them to diagnose others as insane or any other type of mental disorder or defect will not be very open to our line of thinking here on ZSDW.

Maybe stop grilling the woman about her medical history.Hi Aly, sorry I couldn't contribute to your thread sooner, I had to take few days off from the site. I've always been a bit of a survivalist, and very paranoid, but it wasn't until I was pregnant with my son that I actually started doing something about it. Making plans, stocking food, making BOB's, etc. I have zombie nightmares frequently, but what comforts me in the morning is knowing that I'm doing something to help our chances of survival. Maybe it'll help you too. Do you find this valuable? |

"Maybe stop grilling the woman about her medical history. Thanks for that :) I was starting to feel like I was under investigation lol I have always had anxiety( I over think and get myself all worked up), I have always been scared of zombies, who wouldn't be? They have no feelings, mob you and rip you apart. I only started having these dreams after my daughter was born and started new anxiety meds, I think it just has to do with the motherly instinict and side effects of the pills. Plus in the last week my daughter has been teething and with husbands work schedule we only see him once a week, so my stress level is high. To top it off my sister has become obsessed with zombies and to scare me she started going on about how in 2012 everyone will die in a z apocolypse. During the day I'm not scared its just at night when I'm at home by myself and when I sleep. But now thanks to the sleeping plills I have had no more bad dreams :) I think it's smart of you to be prepared, I mean it might not be zombies that attack but if some other country was to attack us, you were smart enough to plan and protect your family :) Do you find this valuable? |

I should preface this by saying I'm not a doctor, psych or parent, but I know a few people who are way too anxious and though I'm generally very laid back a couple of times I've had the whole snakes in the stomach feeling.I'd suggest that your body just telling you to protect your family, and it's doing that in a pretty unproductive way: by filling you up with stress hormones. I'd suggest removing the triggers of stress: don't watch alarmist media - they know that people will only watch/read the news if it's scandalous, frightening or stupid. Saying nothing about political alignment (because that's your business and not mine) my Grandad reads a particular right-wing newspaper in the UK and it fills him with stress and fear which is against his character. He has decided that immigrants are going to destroy the country, but when he actually met my brother's viet gf they got on very well. My point is that he was worrying about things that are only partially true, way overblown and not something he could do anything about. Remember, people have been predicting the end of the world since there have been people. The Aztecs (or was it Mayans?) thought the sun wouldn't come up unless they made sacrifices to it. The world was going to end in 1000 AD, in 1666, in 2000 AD all the computers were going to die and destroy world economy. It didn't happen. Nuclear apocalypse, Russian invasion... Avian flu was going to kill us all, then swine flu. That didn't happen either. So try not to get too tied up with these prophecies. On specifics, zombies walking the earth are fiction. They're fun to fantasise about but it's really not going to happen and even if it did, it'd likely be much more short-lived and less severe than films make out. It's very unlikely that the US will be invaded, too. (cont.) Do you find this valuable? |

(Continued) Look how many strong countries joined you in war even when the massive majority of their populations didn't believe that it was just to do so. We may like to poke fun at America, and spout about its foreign policy, but if it came down to it we wouldn't let that happen. Think: if someone actually invaded the US, the whole of Western (and probably half of Eastern) Europe, Australia, New Zealand and possibly allied nations throughout the pacific would be in on your side, and I don't think any army could stand up to that. When you catch yourself worrying about things that are beyond your control, try to discipline your mind to think about more pleasant subjects. Play with your daughter, listen to Bob Marley, go on hikes whenever you get the chance or go dancing. If you want to be prepared for disaster, then make it into a game so it's fun and just enjoy being outside and in nature. When you go to bed, try to empty your mind or think about stupid, funny things, or sing to yourself in your head. Never go to bed agonising over decisions you've made or need to make. Don't drink more than one coffee a day, and try to get a healthy diet. I'm not going to tell you you're crazy because you're not, but you do seem to have too much worry pumping about your bloodstream. I'm sure the doctor wouldn't have prescribed pills if they weren't necessary, but remember that the body and the mind are not separate things and body problems influence your mood and mind, but also the mind can influence the wellbeing of the body. I hope you found this useful. Congratulations on your baby and I hope you feel better soon. ;) Do you find this valuable? |

I found it very useful thank you so much. I do have alot on my plate I admitt plus all the diet coke I drink doesn't help my caffine intake lol It's a little hard to avoid things about the war when my husband brings it home with him from work when I do get to see him, his hours are from 4 am til 10 pm most nights and he works 6 days a week training new marines. This is my first baby, I just turned 20. Even though my plate is pretty full I love every minute of it :)

My biggest advice would be to tell your sister to shut up. Tell her you have a baby to worry about and all her alarmist talk is affecting your health. And quite frankly, thinking that zombies are going to happen on 2012 is pretty stupid. I think zombies are possible, but they weren't predicted to take over the world by ancient societies. It's not like they're demons or anything, they're just humans with some kind of virus or whatever the case will be. Anyway, having my EDC (every day carry) gear makes me stress a lot less. You're carrying around a diaper bag anyway, might as well put some useful stuff in there. Do you find this valuable? |
