I was out today and thought, 'What type of bike would be better if TSHTF?' Three main types of bikes I could think of were:
The BMX
The Mountain Bike
The Road Bike

They all have their advantages and disadvantages when it comes to different scenarios. The BMX is small and great for urban use. The Mountain Bike is an all rounder and can go cross country quite easily. The Road Bike is great for streets as you can go really darn fast on them.

As for disadvantages, the BMX, you can only use in the city and has no cross country capabilities (really). The mountain bike is rather large and you can't fit it through small gaps easily. The Road Bike has really thin tyres which are useless off road and are difficult to replace.

The rest is up to you guys! =) have fun!

I would go with the mountain bike only because its practical and can be used in multiple enviroments where as the others cannot.

Mountain Bike. Can't go wrong with an all-rounder.
Bring some spare chains, bearings, and tire repair kits, along with a portable air pump. About a month I was riding my bike, and then the bearing on my rear tire broke, and now I can't ride it without the back tire wobbling and hitting the frame.

A friend gave me a three wheel bike he got at a yardsale for a few bucks. Has a big basket in the back and a smaller one on the front. You really can carry alot on it...I've carried three full gas cans in the back no trouble

Slow and kind of dorky though

Mountain bike. Like Ed said, keep lotsa spare parts and a pump.

If you don't have room for a large hand pump, they sell little setups that can fit in the palm of your hand and use standard CO2 cartridges.

Definitely mountain. Much more durable, and much more versatile.

Also, Whybother, where will you get CO2 cartridges in the apocalypse? Everyone will be making paintballl guns loaded with marbles (jk).

Mountain bike for sure. Mine has a really light frame and if I came into a circumstance where I needed to be in tight spaces, I wouldn't be on a bike.

Ed's right, gotta keep ur bike in good repair. Blowing a tire when you really need to move, would suck.

I honestly am deathly afraid of bycicles. I would rather be covered in 100 spiders than ride a bike for 10 minutes. Bikes = fetal position in a corner. Do you find this valuable?

Bike + Zombie Apocalypse = BIG NO NO. The only time I would use one is if no other method of transportation is available and I needed to get out of an area as fast as possible. Using a bike would make you prone to being grabbed while mounting and riding (depending on your speed). Plus, if an accident were to occur, there would be a very slight chance that you and your bike would be in good condition to travel. The use of bikes, to me, is not advisable unless you are EXTREMELY good with riding REALLY fast and evading the living dead that will almost certainly be right on your trail. But, that's just my opinion. Do you find this valuable?

As far as the bike question, You should remember that alot of urban situations the only choices for transportation besides bicycles will be motorcycles because of panic induced traffic jams. Not to mention a Bicycle is quiet, doesn't need fuel, and counts as cardio.
Be careful spouting your opinion like proven fact, or sounding like you are the greatest zombie killer ever... you will only alienate the members of this site

Bikes are a double edge sword. Yes, they have all of the qualities that DLOW mentioned but it also places you at dinner time level. Also, how many people here have dump their bikes and bicycles in their life time? I think the best bike to use is a hybrid Mountain\Road or the SUVs of bikes. It has the gears, tires, and suspension of a Mountain bike, and the comfort of a road bike. I own one and they are really nice. You have to really think ahead to survive the beginning stages of ZPOC on a bike in the city. The burbs and further out will be nicer to a bike rider. In addition, there is a camper tent-cot for the bike.

These just cover alot of the basics that noobs typically come in talking about that we have covered so many times... Walmart plans, the search bar, etc...

I think you are fine personally, becasue you ask questions. Alot of noobs just assume they are god gift to z-poc.

You should read at least the 1ST one of those at the very least. It will likely make you think a little and almost everyone adjusts their plan after reading it.

What kind of mountian bikes? There are many different kinds of mountian bikes.

Also only use a bike that was purchased from a bike shop do not use wal mart bikes or bikes from other big stores, the quality of those bikes are horrible.

Maybe the bike you bought from WalMart wasn't much good, but I used to have a bike from there (it got jacked), and it was perfectly good quality. Obviously if you run it over with a semi, it won't be going anywhere, but mine survived a couple of falls and was none the worse for wear. (Some paint came off, but that's not something serious in a zombie apocalypse.)
