My Fortification Idea.
Nov 14 2010, 4:53 PM EST | Post edited: Nov 14 2010, 5:09 PM EST
So I was thinking my grandfather can back the bucket truck (It has a hollow back) into the back of the dump truck, creating a some-what fortified, protected area where I could live with some other survivors. I would also use the bobcat to dig a trench around our area, stack the dirt from the trench around the trucks to stabalize it incase the zombies pile up en masse and manage to get out of the trench, and we can also put logs against it for more stabalization. I would then put tarps over the open area of the truck, keep a ladder near the sides (to escape when the zombies's bodies eventually rot and become useless, also for bathroom breaks) then weld some alluminum sheets where the truck connects (for peace of mind) put planks where the metal in the dump truck is bent, set up the matresses (with pillows/blankets) and put my cooler filled with food and another one filled with water bottles near my matress, and wait it out. Criticism/comments? 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

"Okay, I live in a VERY rural area, my grandfather is a logger (He has bobcats, a dump truck, a bucket truck, and our backyard is full of logs) and we have enough resources to foritify my idea. how do you plan to get in/out, jk seems a good idea, and it doesn't attract much attention.
And please, fix your wall-o-text

"just a note, you can't weld aluminum."
yes, you can weld aluminum, its just requires more preparation than steel
http://www.lincolnelectric.com/knowledge/articles/content/alum.asp

there are also some metal alloy welding rods that can weld different metals together I.E aluminum to steel.....
http://www.muggyweld.com./aluminum.html (ok technically this is soldering but you get the idea...)

Hm why dont you try living in a 10X10 sea container with no windows or doors, with no lights, no heating or cooling, not running water and no septics for lets say two weeks...

If you dont go comletely nuts by then you will literally be ankle deep in your own filth, freezing or stolwly steaming yourself and covered in flies/Rats and mice...

Now try and live in a 10X10 Sea Container with 5 people for two weeks....

You obviously didn't read my entire post, then. I will cover the top of the dump truck with a tarp so I can use the ladder I'm keeping inside of there to climb out and use the bathroom. As for freezing slowly, blankets and pillows. As for slowly roasting, removing the tarp from the truck.

Ladder over end of truck = me climbing out near the barracades = me using the bathroom in somewhat comfort.

WOW, you have no idea how much your age just poked through, Thats the first time I haven't heard that term used in a historical reference. It's called Gas Tungsten Arc Welding now.

Yes you can most certainly weld Aluminium (and yes I spell it the English way). The most common ways to weld Aluminium are using either GTAW or Pulsed GMAW welding. You can also Braze Aluminium (as jdj35 pointed out).

Having said that GTAW is the most preferable way to weld Aluminium, Aluminium forms a tenacious oxide that is most effectively welded with an AC current.

If you've never used GTAW to weld Aluminium, it's a different animal than steel, you need to hit it with alot of current to establish a puddle, and you need to have a much higher travel speed than with steel.

"You obviously didn't read my entire post, then."

Break up the Wall'O'text Or I refuse to read past the first sentence.

"I will cover the top of the dump truck with a tarp"

Then how is it a fort? or even a shelter?.

"As for freezing slowly, blankets and pillows. As for slowly roasting, removing the tarp from the truck."

Like I said try living in a tiny steel box with a group and then tell me you will be fine.

Besides what is the point of a shelter if it dosent protect you from the element to some degree.

Trust me you will be stinking hot and covered in flies and mosquitos in the summer and freezing, wet and unable to light a fire during winter...

It is good to see that you take feed back and have made changes to your plan and I'm sure you can make this into a workable plan

You just need to concider everything even things like taking a dump will have to be concidered in your plan...
