Lake Hartwell
Dec 8 2010, 1:45 AM EST
I've decided to create an artificial island of sorts in the lake of the small town of Hartwell. The population of the town is quite tiny compared to most of Georgia. I live less than a minute above a commercial marina, where they have exactly 8 docks of houseboats and fishing boats. I plan on taking over the J-Dock (the dock where the boats are actually lived in by their owners) with 6 of my friends and one small child. From there we will load the boats with our weapons, b.o.b.'s, dry rations, and everyday necessities and wait it out. Thankfully the weather in Georgia is very humid, so the decomposition process on the zombies will, "in theory" cause the to rot to pieces quickly. In the meantime, most of the boats that I've been to on this particular docks are stocked with canned goods, as well as everyday needs (soap, medicine, cooking wear, storage containers, etc.) so as previously said, I plan to wait out the biggest part of the infections until the panic dies down and our small town can be scavenged for more supplies or possibly be found by some form of military or government militia.

Interesting thoughts. How many people live on the J-dock? And how many are willing to help/join you as of now?

and what if owners of said boats come to the dock to wait it out in their own boat (im sure its not the least common idea of people ... esp. after people saw the Dawn of the Dead remake)

Well I'm not to occupied with the thought of them wanting to help our group out. A lot of the people who live on the particular dock are from the greater metropolis and are higher up in age, so my thoughts on this are that a lot of these people, along with the townsfolk are going to do what the rest of our unprepared civilization are going to do....take the **** off. However, if there are a select few who choose to stay on their boats, there are 15 boats on this particular dock, so it just comes down to the pick and choose of the boats left. I just have to get them undocked and pushed out far enough into the lake so that we can be safe from the widespread panic ensuing our town. Do you find this valuable? |

We in all common sense, I would hope they would see the logistics of situation. Thus realizing that we are safer to undock the boats and create this artificial island in the middle of our lake by working together. And if not, then there is always mutiny to be had. haha. Do you find this valuable? |

then what if some guy just tries to swim his ass over to you and also yeah i know alot of boaters keep some supplies on board just incase but i dont think more than a day or 2's worth unless they were specifically preparing for something like this also what then if zombies encircle your little river home (idk how big the lake your mentioning is so this might have no concern for you) Do you find this valuable? |

As for the chance of someone swimming over, well quarantine of course, and if he/she is bitten, well you know how that situation should be handled. However, the lake that I'm talking about is the biggest man-made lake in Georgia, it borders NE Georgia and SW South Carolina, so I'm not concerned about being attacked while in the lake. As for our source of food, I have dry rations packed and ready in my kit, but are not enough for 7 people to live off of for more than 2-3 days, with those and the food on the boats I'd say we'd have enough food for a week-two weeks tops. Although, that's sort of my plan. We just need to be out of harms way for the major panic that will happen the first few days, just until we can scavenge the lake houses that surround the lake for more supplies. I don't expect any of the boats to be fully stocked with food, but like I said we just have to buy time until the lot of the town has been cleared out/killed, then we can begin to scavenge more canned foods/rations/etc. If you ever get the time, check out some reading on Lake Hartwell, it's in a small town where the majority of the population is spaced out and elderly. In "theory" I'm hoping those two factors will work to our advantage. Do you find this valuable? |

still dont really tell me how big the lake isi dont know how big the SECOND LARGEST man made lake in georgia is so i dont know where to estimate its size :P and btw ide try to use like those boat covers that alot of people use for docking their boats for LONG periods of time itd make it look like the boats just some how got untethered and drifted out (rather than purposely moved out) which would attract less attention since it just looks like a boat thats drifting away rather than a boat you can tell at a glance is occupied by people who are safe (which panicking people might be frantically attracted too if zombies are around) Do you find this valuable? |

that's why i said if you got the time do some reading on Lake Hartwell...Also undocking the cover for most docks is not an option, due to the fact that these particular docks are held with concrete. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

The particular dock he is talking about is home to houseboats and large cabin cruisers so they do not need to be uncovered do to the fact that they have roofs over top of them. As for the lake it is 962 miles of shoreline and the deepest part of the lake is about 650 feet deep. The houseboats are not taken out much so many of them are sitting with twin tanks full of fuel, which equals to at LEAST 200 gallons worth of gas. And as for somebody caring if their boat is missing its everybody for themselves when it comes to survival. Irishnism there are 35 boats on J-dock about 25 of them are houseboats and the remaining are large cabin cruisers. Supplies would run out fairly fast on the houseboats because so few people spend a lot of time on them, but since the town is so small you would just have to wait out the initial freak out then start launching reconnaissance and supply missions. Thankfully there are many places along the shore like gas stations other marinas and restaurants, but the best bet (and safest) would be to raid houses on the lake for supplies. Lot of rich people means lot of food.

Damn, Hannah. You have that **** on lock. Thankfully you worked there and know it like the back of your hand. ;)Also I didnt even take into consideration the large cabin cruisers like the capricari and so forth, which would be amazing if we could just all pile into it. I figured we'd we try for the 10-15 smaller house boats, but you know the marina better than I, so I'm following your lead. Girl, we got this. Haha. Do you find this valuable? |

like the idea - i live on the sc side near one of the BIG marinas . plenty of big boats , resturants around the lake full of dry nonparisable goods , lots of deep water even during winter when lake level is low so you can keep changing location so as not to make an easy target for raiders lots of houses to scavenge for needed items

Well good mam' or sir, you now know where we will be, so just look for a huge barrage of boats tied together in the middle of the lake and come on over. Haha.

You have a good idea! I don't think Zombies can swim. The opened water could be the only safe place! I will keep this in mind if Z-day ever happens
