I eat an MRE. For a PURPOSE!
Jan 6 2011, 9:31 PM EST
And that purpose is to let you know what an MRE is like as a person. I got this box only a couple of days ago, but the MREs were made quite a while ago. They were just spare boxes banging around in our storage room. They are still good, and well within the dates. The MRE, Cheese Tortellini in Tomato Sauce. This was the MRE that was pulled randomly out of the box. They are not packed so that you can see what is in them until you pull them out. In the spirit of my training, "I got what I got and I can trade later." The pictures, in order, since I cannot post them inside of a post, are in a photobucket album at the bottom of the article. The overall look is the same as in the article, with a different packaging company. Once opened, this packaging company did not use the inner clear plastic bag. You can plainly see my snack, which I am eating while writing this. This MRE actually turned out pretty good for me. It came with the entree, spiced apples, peanut M&Ms, a Hooah bar, crackers, peanut butter, and a raspberry drink mix (not pictured, didn't notice in in the bag when I took the picture) The accessory packet, rather than coffee, has spiced cider. I'll be eating this meal cold, as the chemical heater puts off hydrogen, and there is no way in hell I'm eating outside. Well, let the eating begin. It doesn't look very appetizing. Hopefully the seasoning packet it came with will make it taste better than it looks. Down the hatch! Not too bad, actually. It would be much better hot. It would probably be better if it hasn't mildly frozen in the car while we were working. On ot the spiced apple pieces! I've had them before, my first MRE in fact, and love them to death. Them and spiced pears. Ok, those looks like they are made different. I'm looking for SOPAKO for my next box. On to the HOOAH! Bar then. Chocolate flavor. Do you find this valuable? |

Looks delicious, doesn't it? They taste okay. I'm not going to finish this one, because the HOOAH bars are way too rich for me. IT IS that chocolatey.Crackers and peanut butter. You can't **** it up. The raspberry drink is like any other powdered drink base in a tube. The apple cider sucks. The gum isn't a laxative. There are two kinds of gum, cinnamon and peppermint. Red and clear wrappers, respectively. I had that for my dinner. Be glad. Do you find this valuable? |

"From what I hear the cheese and crackers is epic."The Jalepeno cheese is the best =) I also love the strawberry shakes and pretty much all the jellies. I haven't had the chance to try a Hooah bar yet. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I like mixing the jalapeno and bacon cheese. With either wheat bread or vegetable crackers.I ******' hate Hooah bars. I like the Ranger bars, though. The pictures will be a bit, both my phone and photobucket are being a bit screwy. Do you find this valuable? |

I have never eaten an MRE, but I have been heavily considering buying a few cases to keep for emergencies. Are there any suggestions on what flavors I should buy? Are there any suggestions on what flavors I shouldn't buy? Do you find this valuable? |

"I have never eaten an MRE, but I have been heavily considering buying a few cases to keep for emergencies.Avoid beef patty for sure, it tastes like wet dog food. Don't even look at the omelet. Chili and Chili Mac are both good, as well as chicken w/noodles, enchilada, and chicken dumplings. Do you find this valuable? |

MREs are great. When I was a kid my father used to bring home unused C-rats, they were horrible. When I went through and we had MREs I thought there were mothers milk in comparison.

Anyone ever tried the beef stew? I just bought one and want an opinion on the main course specifically. The sides were cheese, crackers, marble pound cake, and a strawberry-banana dairy shake. Not too bad, since I lubz the shakes...

Being used by the army, i would expect MREs to be quite nutritional and sustaining. However, how space-efficient are they?half a kilo of rice would probably keep my belly reasonably full for 3 days on its own. Although it requires water, it's very compact, with very little packaging. Long-term nutritional value aside, would rice not be a better option short-term? Sure it has very bland taste, but doesn't require a great deal to add flavour. Do you find this valuable? |
