Jute Twine
Jan 11 2011, 1:09 PM EST
While it's not as strong as nylon, jute twine has more uses than the synthetics. Jute can be used as tinder for flint and steel, It's earthy color and "shaggy" appearance make it good for setting snares and triplines that are hard to see. Wrap a foot or two around a branch and you have a torch for when your flashlight fails

2nd the jute twine, couple of freebies to suggest.Head over to the closest coin laundry and check the trash for a quart bleach bottle, unscented only, a disposed disposable lighter, dryer lint, and a mint tin. The bleach bottle will make a sturdy water bottle/canteen, the bleach soaked into the plastic will help disinfect the water. Gut the lighter for the sparking mechanism, instant flint and steel. use the mint tin to hold your new flint and steel along with some tinder(dryer lint) You now have fire and water at zero cost. I was able to rescue some disposable carpet knife blades to add to my tin, look like the old double edged razor blades, except about 2 inches long and a little heavier metal. Free sharps to use for light cutting. Still looking for something heavier. While you are looking you will see some other usable free things, but that was what I was looking for recently. Just buy a canteen and some water purification tabs. And a fire steel. If you're short on money, save your change. Its insane how much money you can rack up that way. Do you find this valuable? |

"Just buy a canteen and some water purification tabs. And a fire steel. Why spend money when you don't need to? Also, this way you can make several sets at no cost for your caches, better than putting all your eggs in one basket. Do you find this valuable? |

Why not just scrounge up a couple bucks and buy some of these items that will actually work instead of being cheap. When the time comes i would rather have spent $0.30 on some matches then to rely on someones used up lighter. lighter- $1 matches- $0.30 torch- 2.00 plastic water bottle( with water in it)- $.80 pocket knife- 5$ poncho- 1$ that is some basic stuff that you can get for under 5$ Do you find this valuable? |
