Why I fear 2012(read before locking).
Jan 30 2011, 6:26 AM EST
So, we all know that 2012 is a load of crap, but has anyone considered that all of the believers and the panic they cause could be a threat? We here at the ZSDW always encourage preparation for the panic that z-day will spread, so what about 2012?Tell me what you think. P.S. the movie 2012 was terrible. I hate the man who dared to direct that piece of crap. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I'd say go ahead and stock up on food, water, and any other supplies you may need just because you don't want to be out when the fanatic people are out. I don't believe 2012 is the end but it never hurts to be prepared for anything. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I can see this sort of happening - religious fanatics causing a **** storm and everyone freaking out thinking its the end of the world. I agree - stock up and keep weary. Do you find this valuable? |

I think you're going to see about the response you did for Y2K, and that one actually had a sound scientific basis for some of the worrying. There would have to be a lot more hype generated among those that aren't fringe wackos for anything significant to happen. Do you find this valuable? |

Stock up now, because you can bet that the first half of 2012 is when prices will skyrocket due to extra consumption (all the crazies stocking up for the end of the world as prophesised by Mayans).

Just wanna say, on December 22, 2012, there's gonna be a big a** party at my house. But, anyway, I agree. I don't think it'll be widespread chaos. Like Ariel said, Y2K was a pretty good indicator. Do you find this valuable? |

At this point there have been several "end of the world" events that have come and gone in out lifetime. I think most people are over it, and skeptical at the very least. There may be a few fruit loops out there screaming Armageddon, maybe even some cool cults to give me something to watch on tv, but I seriously doubt mass hysteria. I have been wrong before though. haha Do you find this valuable? |

To those comparing it to Y2K, that was just a new millenia. There was nothing said about the world ending by 2000 by any ancient dudes, so everyone knew that was BS. New millenias have come before. This, according to believers, actually has "proof"(I use that term liberally) of the calendar ending, plus nostradomus(whoever that is). I forsee this as being worse, especially since a guy I know thinks that demons will rise up from hell, and in order to prepare, he'll raid everyone's houses on the 20th-21st days of december. There are two problems to face with the 2012 thing.First, people who suspect that there is the slightest chance things may happen will be hording food and other necessities just before December arrives. If you plan on having food stocked do so throughout the coming 21 months, it will be easier in the long run. Second, the experts do not currently know for certain what the date symbolizes. This is a bit disconcerting when dealing with an astronomical calendar. The sun and planetary movement can impact things like the poles, tides, tilt of the axis, etc. The reality is our scientists will pooh-pooh the work of some, but cannot really tell us what happens under certain astronomical conditions and alignments. Earlier this month Florida's Tampa International airport closed due to a magnetic shift. What happens if a shift is greater and occurs rapidly due to some astronomical or solar event? Wasn't this also about the same time that flocks of birds and schools of fish turned up dead? Do you find this valuable? |

The thing i fear most (though i dont actually fear it) is people panicing about the 2012 myth. I'l be stocking up on non-perishable foods anyway, but thats not because of 2012.Im in the UK, where, no offence, i dont think people wil panic as much as in the US. Dont get me wrong, people panic buy in the UK if there's a fuel shortage, but the US just seems more keen on the whole panic buying thing. Regarding living in a dorm- just buy bulk rice. Its sooo cheap, in the UK you can get 5kg for £5. thats a few weeks worth of rice for one person- for a fiver! Do you find this valuable? |

"I agree to bad I'll be in college when this happens. Hard to prepare when your living in a dorm."Amen. I'm thinking I'll just stock up, and stay in my personal dorm...with my golf club. That is, unless I can find some guys to get an apartment with by then. Then a whole world of opportunity opens up. I read an article that said something about the 2012 date being off like...50 years. http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/mayan-calendars-2012-doomsday-prophecy-wrong/story?id=11926347 Of course, it's full of "maybes" and such. As far as the people themselves, I don't think we have anything huge to worry about until there is something to actually "panic" about. Of course you'd still be buying stuff now in preparation. Good topic, TK. =] Do you find this valuable? |

"To those comparing it to Y2K, that was just a new millenia. There was nothing said about the world ending by 2000 by any ancient dudes, so everyone knew that was BS. New millenias have come before."Oh, how soon we forget. Guess it's time to educate those that either weren't around or weren't paying attention during the past millennium. Some poorly designed, older computer programs (like those used by the government and non-progressive businesses) had a problem because some of them were programmed with only two slots for the year, so the year 1999 would be read as 99, and the year 2000 would be 00. Essentially they would mistake the year 2000 for 1900 causing all sorts of possible issues. This was actually an issue and might have caused some minor inconvenience for any number of users had not their been extensive work to weed out these bugs and fix them. In the typical Ludditic fear of the time, in the face of increasing automation of essential systems by computers, some people believed the computers might all fail, destroying power stations, causing planes to fall from the sky, etc. They took a very real problem, grounded in fact, and amplified it given their mistrust of new technologies and typical end-times paranoia. It wasn't just a new millennium. Do you find this valuable? |
