Alcohol Stoves
Feb 7 2011, 11:39 AM EST
They boil water fast and you don't have to deal with fuel canisters. You can also make them from aluminum cans. In fact the best one I've ever owned was a home made one out of tin cans. It boils in 4 minutes and doesn't need a pot stand.

Actually RB I think it is a great idea. Say you do have some alcohol and a tin can and you need to purify water it looks like you will be in good shape. Good advice for a certain situation. A great addition to a site that is based upon "situations"...

I have in fact tested the whole alcohol and fire in a tin can theory after seeing a survival tip to keep a bottle of alcohol, a roll of TP, a lighter, and a tin can in your car at all times. If you found yourself stranded and needed fire you simply saturate some TP with alcohol and stick it in the can. Light it up and there you go. Something about the blue flames make me feel all tingly inside. To quote Alfred Pennyworth "Some men just want to watch the world burn." Do you find this valuable? |

It runs on any Ethyl alchohol above 70% and isopropyl Alcohol above 90%. Denatured alcohol works the best though and it can be found for a decent price in any home improvement paint section. You need about an ounce to boil 2-4 cups of water. I would also repackage the alcohol in a plastic container to reduce weight. No alcohol does not eat plastic like gasoline. Just make sure you label the plastic so you don't accidently drink it. Here this website explains all the pro's and cons better than I can. It also provides directions on how to make alcohol stoves. And andy you could distill your own alcohol for the stove it would be relitively easy to do.http://zenstoves.net/Stoves.htm heres a link on making your own stills :). http://homedistiller.org/ Do you find this valuable? |

But the still requires heat, right? So you need a fire, unless you can use the alcohol stove to produce more alcohol than it needs to run. Is that possible?

"http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/page/Alcohol+Camping+StoveBaddas, thanks for the link I mentioned in another post a much similar, but probably less safe or effective way to get heat. Me and my friend discovered this and have used it to warm up a tent whilst at a music festival. Spray deodorant for <10 seconds into an empty aluminium can, light the top. It will give a small flame for several minutes. We tried spraying it for ages and then left it outside lit in his back garden, went back to it over 20 minutes later and it was still going. we thought about the possibillity of it bursting or collapsing due to pressure changes, so experimented with poking a small hole in the side of the can. Bad idea. The hole we made and the one on top turned browny/green and made a naaaasty smell. I've been to Download music festival for the past 4 years and i use it every time i get cold. Cheap and effective. Im assuming any flammable material which evaporates quickly could be used. Do you find this valuable? |

"But the still requires heat, right? So you need a fire, unless you can use the alcohol stove to produce more alcohol than it needs to run. Is that possible?"You can use a solar still. I think its on the site I posted ealier under stills that arn't really stills. Under making your own stills. It might take a long time though lol. Do you find this valuable? |
