zDexter's Survival Plan
Feb 18 2011, 6:39 PM EST
G'day folks, zDexter here pushing the survivor effort in Australia, This is my firsst post (so please, be harsh) and as i see it there are 3 sure-fire ways of surviving a ZPOC here, short of locking yourself in a cellar with a steel door are:1. Heading out west into the scarcely populated outback 2. Living at sea, or Sydney harbour or 3. Escaping into the bush. During the intial panic of Z-day i doubt that it would be possible to safely drive the 4 hours it would take to take me out of my urban area so my plan relies on bailing into the bush. Keep in mind that no matter how well planned we are, or how many details we have taken into consideration, our survival will depend on circumstantial and opportunistic factors. e.g You have a foolproof zombie plan, a perfect BOB and BOL, a ssource of food and water, but z-day strikes when you're in the city attending a huge music festival (game over) With that in mind, i devised my plan with spontanaety at the forefront. 2 minutes from my house lies an entrance to a vast bush reserve, in which a few select friends and i have created our BOL, complete with cliff on one side, climbable for us, not so much for zack, thick scrub and ankle traps on all other sides, make-shift bed and fireplace and a pantry. Consisting of a hidden eski containing enough canned food and drink for a few days. When zeds strike my friends and i (who all share a common plan) can make it to our BOL in a timely manner from anywhere in the near local area. If i am fortunate enough to be at home and the option of bugging in isn't an available option (i have a separate plan for bugging in at home) i can have myself geared up and my BOB packed in just over a minute, armed with a crowbar i can be in the safety on the bush within minutes. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Would you be able to survive in the bush, trapping, foraging, hunting for food and water? possibly for a few years.

How long do you believe a Z-poc will last? it takes the human body 3 weeks to starve, that in combination with the decaying nature of a zombie, i hadn't planned for aa few years worth of survivalBut if i had to, there are unpolluted streams nearby that can be boiled for drinking water, as well as small mammals. However 10 minutes in a certain direction few houses start to appear, after i exhausted all my canned food supplies at my base and BOB i can begin scavenging these houses one at a time, i can cover several houses before putting myself in danger of a population of more than 20. My BOL is secluded, but not remote, a half days hike will take me to different suburbs, schools etc (but i will only do so in completely neccessary) Do you find this valuable? |

Don't expect zombies to conform to human physiology. By their very existence, they won't be doing this.

Fair point, i do try and prepare for the worstalso, i havent yet seen this point raised anywhere else, but are firearms considered a better primary weapon? i have my doubts because of the noise they make and the subsequent attraction of more zombies Do you find this valuable? |

I'd say that not using one at all would be a better choice. Close quarters weapons come with an inherent risk of infection, and firearms, as you said, draw attention. I would wager that almost every situation, especially against zeds, could be avoided with a bit of planning and caution. But, at least in my view, any situation that requires action, a firearm is preferable because by the time that you are forced to engage a target, you would already by up against a large number. Otherwise, you could mostly likely escape instead of fight. Do you find this valuable? |

You make a good point, but does anyone see any merit in extermination? that of actively removing zeds from the area round about your BOL, because whats the point of surviving if you can never relax. Commiting yourself to systematic extermination would mean actively going out each day and picking off however many you can, ultimately making the area safer, if done so without firearms, large amounts of zombies wont be attracted to the noise of your plight. thought? Matey, I also live in the outer 'burbs of Sydney. Plan to Bug in for a few days. I have my EDC with me which will serve as a GHB. Eventually I hope to make to the Blue Mountains -around Blackheath or Jenolan, the natural cliffs and fresh water sources will be key to survival... I'm a fan of hiking in the area as well as Megalong...However, if I'm at work in the CBD it'll be a lot trickier (damned for bein an office worker)... Do you find this valuable? |

I like it simple and easy, I also like your points on why bother exterminating them. I will guess you have left this unsaid but the only time I would kill a zombie or any number of them is if they started to wander close to my BOL and then only with silent means.

I like your frank and realistic view of bugging out from an urban location. I also like the idea of keeping things flexiable as possible. Having scouted out a spot to hole up in, shows that you have given this more than just a passing, casual thought. However I think you should give more thought to the long term. The spot you have selected seems to be more of an initial BOL, a meeting place for your friends once the dead arise. This may buy you a few days, but what if your friends bring others? What then? One problem of living in a large populated area is that once the dead start wandering around looking for ppls to munch on, ppls will tend to flee to the suburbs and then to the same bush your going to hold up in. A bigger problem is that they will bring their infected and the shambling moaning horde with them. Unless your able to keep a very low profile so that nobody notices you, dead or otherwise, your going to have company. This same group is likely to get hungry and start to scavenge the same houses your thinking of. A firearm is always preferable over a melee weapon, but whenever possible, avoid detection and avoid having to fight zombies. Firearms make noise, which will attract more zombies, or worse; desperate, starving and terrified survivors. The odd shot may be hard to zero in on, but a series of shots is advertising your position. As for extermination, is there any point? Not too sure how many ppls live in Sydney, but if we only assume half get turned into zombies, the other half either survive or end up in zombie stomachs, you got alot of zeds to worry about. Your going to need a butt load of ammo.. even if you can somehow convince all the zombies to line up in a row for 10 headshots at a time...... I would recommend avoiding contact if all possible, but there will be situations where you will have to engage them in combat. Just pick your ground and terms to fight on whenever possible.
