How to Properly Title a New Thread (and Other Posting Tips)
Feb 28 2011, 2:39 PM EST
| Post edited: Feb 28 2011, 2:40 PM EST
After taking a quick glance through the latest threads being discussed in the 'Updates' tab, it has become painfully obvious that most of the threads being discussed are inadequately titled. Many of these titles lack direction, they're often misspelled and improperly punctuated, and a lot of the time, they provide no indication as to the topic of the posts contained within the thread. Since the title that is assigned by the OP is the one under which the whole thread is assigned - it cannot be changed - it needs to be carefully chosen because it is the first part of the thread people see. Here's a few tips for choosing a title: - Choose a title that reflects the content of the thread that you're posting. It's nice to know what you're getting into before you get there! - Check the spelling of your subject title before hitting that little grayish-pink "Post" button. Nothing says "I'm retarded" like a poorly spelled title. - If you want people to take the time to read (and respond) to your thread, take the time to dot your I's and cross your T's. PROOFREADING should be performed before you hit the previously-described "Post" button. - Proper punctuation and capitalization are good things! Feel free to use them in your titles too. Nobody expects perfection - we're not giving you a grade and we're not going to assign you homework. However, if you expect us to treat you like an intelligent member of the ZSDW, you must SHOW US that you're an intelligent member of the ZSDW. An extra minute or two of editing can change a poor post into an excellent one, and excellent posts (and the person who posts them) get noticed. 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

May I also suggest that users, if contributing a vastly different or contrasting view to the original intent of the OP, have the option to title their individual post, as I have done above. This clearly marks a new discussion or line of debate has begun. It also makes your post more visible. Once again, LJ, thanks for writing this guide. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

This has been said a million times, but I'll say it again. Do a quick search of the site before starting a new thread. If one exists and is relatively active, add your thoughts to that one. If there isn't a similar thread, or if a similar thread was last posted on months ago, start a new one. Good thread LJ :) 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

" I spelled my first thread wrong, and I'll never forget it."For the longest time when I saw your profile pic I'd say to myself, "Hey! Mr. Tectical is still posting!" It didn't help that the thread was such an over-whelming success that from time to time gets necro'd back from good thread heaven to remind us all of your mis-spelling. :) 2 out of 2 found this valuable. And "futile", Marshal Cogburn, "pursuit would be futile"? It's not spelled "f-u-d-e-l." Sorry, it seemed like a good quote for the situation. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

So are you trying to tell us all that UR and EMIRITE are not considered to be proper English? So a fresh new thread about going to Walmart to dig in shouldn't be labeled "R u gonna go 2 Walmart" I'm going to start a workshop on the subject. Here's a taste of what I have in mind.Which sentence will get Grandpa dead? 1. Let's go eat, Grandpa. or 2.Let's go eat Grandpa! One other thing, funny how all of the old timers are the only ones on this thread. Must be too intimidating. Fin. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Old timers?Ha Ha, so sorry, so sorry. What I had meant by the term "Old Timers" were members that have been on the site for some time, longer than I at least. As for your lawn, I missed the No Trespassing, No Soliciting sign. My bad. :) 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"As for your lawn, I missed the No Trespassing, No Soliciting sign. My bad. :)"What are you some foreigner? This is soil sovereign to me. You don't need a sign. No Trespassing is implied by it not being yours! Having posted here, am I now an Oldtimer? Do you find this valuable? |

"What are you some foreigner? This is soil sovereign to me. You don't need a sign. No Trespassing is implied by it not being yours!I hail from the arid deserts of Nevada and am as pure blood american as they come. As for not needing trespassing signs, I couldn't agree more. I guess I have just become desensitized by the city life and expect signs everywhere to heard the sheep along. I don't concider myself an "Old Timer" on the site though I hit my three year mark in April. Some have been on since ZSDWs inception. Keeping with the OP, I proof read and approve this message.
