MRE's
Mar 12 2011, 6:49 AM EST
Meals, rejected by the enemy. I've heard they are better than starving to death. Having never starved to death i can't say for certain. The newere MRE's are vastly improved over the older versions. The best use of the first generation MRE's were as bait for a trap in an attempt to snag something more eatable, like a rat. Seriously though, if possible set aside a teaspoon full of the meal, or a piece of cracker as bait. The jelly draws scorpions like flys. Remove the stinger before roasting. If the meal is past its expiration date, the coffee, sugar, matches and tp can still be salvaged usually.Comercial camping meals also keep well and usually taste alot better. Use the MRE's for trading stock. Given the price for surplus, nearly out dated MRE's, there are better alternatives at the sporting goods stores. Just an observation. Good luck on Z day Do you find this valuable? |

Meh.Not many MRE's where I'm around. Canned foof ftw. Heavy, sure, but it's reliable. Plus canned foods offer nutrients that an MRE might not give you. Though I'll look into MRE's. Do you find this valuable? |

Still can't properly prepare, but I think there's some milsurp and camping stores I can look into locally for food options. I've heard people say that MREs are the death of the American military in a brown package and people say that they're almost as good as home cookin'. I guess it all depends on the meal. I, for one, would appreciate the meal variation of modern MREs as opposed to endless cans of soup, beans, crackers, and water.

I don't mind MREs. Granted, some are better than others, and the veggie omelet is deathly, but none are really BAD with that specific exception. None are as good as home cooking, but they're edible and even good. Most are better heated, but sometimes it's a lot more convenient to eat them cold, which you can.

Personally, I'm not tempted by MREs much. I thought about it, but I'd rather pack my own food which I know will last, is very compact and I can make nutritious and taste good.

"Most MRE's have all those qualities, some may not taste good but most do"I agree, had to eat them in cadets once, I was sketchy at first, but they were actually pretty good. Do you find this valuable? |

I personally like the MRE's, on occasion I eat one for my lunch. Also there are non military MRE's that in my opinion taste slightly better and usually have larger portions at the same of lower price. But check the expiration date, if you pay full price you want to make sure that you get the full 5 plus year life. Freeze dried meals are excellent in my opinion. But they need quite a lot of water to cook and are not recommended to eat cold and unconsolidated. Although the ice cream is great right out of the package with no water. I am 50/50 on swapping out the MRE's in my BOB with freeze dried meals. Even though I have Clif bars to eat on the move. Do you find this valuable? |

Besides, even if you end up with a meal that tastes like sh*t at least you have a guaranteed meal.
