A faction made of the mormon church?
Mar 28 2011, 8:30 PM EDT
So, before I am accused by those not in the know of being anti-mormon, I am actually LDS, and if you read on, you'll see this is definetly not attacking mormons in any way.Anyhow, the thought came to me earlier "what would [insert famous person] do on z-day" until I came to the leaders of my church, to which I thought "I wonder if the church would stay organized?", until I came to a list of things that might make them a good canadite for a faction: Pro's: 1. our capital, salt lake city, is surounded by mountains on all sides. 2. It also has a 60%-70% mormon population, meaning lots of recruits. 3.We already have an idea as to how individual communities(we'll get to those) would operate. 4.We have well united and organized wards and branches all over the planet, for which salt lake can instantly communicate with via sattelite 5.temples are built much like castles, and I've never seen one without a wrought-iron fence around them. 6. mormons are advised to stockpile food, batteries, ect.(many include bullets and firearms to this list, though this was never ordered). 7. the church actually owns many planes, train, cars, ect., along with many factories, universities, and power plants. 8.we're already a record keeping church, so knowledge preservation will no problem. cons: 1: anti-mormons may feel alienated and attack with some serious determination. 2: I can't think of any more. I'm not Mormon, so I'm sure this applies to me...well... not at all; but it sounds viable, if it is already in the works so to speak.

I think the biggest problem I could see is of course, religion. It is so big of a concern for so many people that it just tends to inflame things that otherwise would be ignored. Many many wars have been started in the name of religion; it is just an excuse to some people to claim their evil deeds are done in the name of their god. This could lead to attacks on your settlement for no reason other than your religion. And on the other side of things, I can easily see a Mormon faction post-Zed get power hungry and start killing anyone who didn't convert. (You'd be amazed at how an apocalypse and perhaps the death of a good leader can change things) Religion offers a greedy despot all the power he needs to enslave the masses. "'Twas inevitable."Wait, I don't get it...The magnet thing. But! That is a good idea I think since you will have most of Salt Lake on your side. But over in my area, I don't think we have many mormans. Thats sick how they have "forts" basically. We have monks in my area (About 30 minutes into the mountains) that live on their own and they have a whole community pretty much. That might be a good place to be. Do you find this valuable? |

"I think the biggest problem I could see is of course, religion.Yes, but I think that few people in the US have problems with the Mormons. I am a Member of the Church of Christ and I would be fine trading or even living with Mormons. The only religious groups I see being targeted post Z-day are Muslims and possibly some African-American churches due to racism. Do you find this valuable? |

*Lumps most mormons together* From what I've seen of the mormons I think they would, on average, be in a better situation than plenty others. Mostly for the reasons you've already listed. Many of them have a level of community and communication I find astounding and so many of them just seem so friggin helpful and nice. That stockpile of food thing is a huge deal in my mind and their pre-poc organization can only help. =^_^=Also, its hard for me to imagine their tennets being used for causing a lot of harm since there is so little in the way of divine punishment amongst that culture. The fact that so many of them are well armed is another huge boon. =^_^= Even though I could never believe it myself and I know that even some of the real believers can be a bit snobbish at times, that's one of the few branches of Judeo Christian religions I've always been able to get along with... even if I do poke fun at them from time to time.. =^_^;;= 0 out of 1 found this valuable. My own religion allows quite a bit of freedom, especially considering that I believe all religions hold a fraction of the truth, it lets you make friends without as many boundaries, and I am able to relate to some of their religious views as well. Now, I'm a member of a church, running their sound equipment, tithing, helping out at the food bank and dancing and singing along with them all, making them think I'm one of them but it won't have to be that way much longer. =^_^= I have an almost maddening hatred of religions (read as law/order/societal expectations/norms/belief in justice) to be honest... And for a time I wasn't so cloak and dagger about it, but now it serves my purposes better to keep it under wraps and look like a convert.... or maybe a prodigal son... so I vent on internet forums to keep the thoughts of the laughter from burrowing out of my skull at an inopportune moment. =^_~= I don't know if I could make friends with someone from an opposing religion.... well, as long as they didnt' really believe their religion, then we'd be okay I guess. If I end up stuck with a religious group come z-day I'll be sure that life is a very sick joke. =^_^= But if I had to choose, I'd rather they be mormons. They've always offended me less and caused me the fewest problems, destroyed relationships and property damage. =^_^= Do you find this valuable? |

I can see the Mormons doing quite well for all the reasons you mentioned. I've met a few people of that faith and heard them praised for thier generousity when it comes to charity.Do you find this valuable? |

I think they would do great. Food storage (a Mormon thing), guns, large families, tight knit community, ect. I do fear them during zedpoc though. Living in SLC I have wondered just how they would deal with us non-members.

I would be wary of any religious groups at all. Mormons would be quite high on that list.I don't hate mormons, but they do have a tendancy to preach a lot, especially here in the UK (I've seen many american mormons walking around city centres trying to get people to go to church) and from having a mormon friend at college, I know they have some batsh*t crazy ideas which they hold dear (sorry for any offence caused). To me, any people i would hook up with would have to be of a logical disposition and not prone to be a slave to externally forced-upon beliefs or emotions. Aside from the offensive logic applied to such beliefs, anybody who tells me i'm sinful for drinking coffee or wine can suck on my love rocket, and most definately not gain my support in any way during a SHTF scenario unless it was vital. I'd like to stress I don't hate mormons in the slightest, i just think some of their teachings are mental. Do you find this valuable? |

I look at this as being a continuation of the .."Deal w/ forsaken Religious Fanatic"...threadI think in areas, such as Utah, where they are well established today Mormans as a group would definitley do better then most other groups due to it's meebers being part of a very cohesive religious group that is instructed today that they should stockpile food and be " prepared" I can see where in the post Apocalyptic world where Goverment restraints are removed and a bigger "Us vs Them" feeling emerges the Morman church could revert back to how it was in the past where it massacred non believers including women and children and had an armed military like wing. I think in the post apocalyptic world in areas where they don't make up a large population now they could run into trouble with other religious factions such as Christians, especialy Fundamental Christians of who I think most consider them as being some sort of non Christian Cult Do you find this valuable? |

*Reads Filadog's post* Wait what? =*_*= *Looks into the darker side of Mormon history... which wasn't hard to find... and was chock full of more primary source material than any subject he's ever studied.* Ahahahhahahahhaa!!! The cute missionaries didn't tell me that one! You're kidding me, you have got to be kidding me right? So you mean to tell me the only thing that's keeping the group nice and in check is their lack of total domination of the society. They just changed the harsher aspects of their doctrine to avoid total annihilation.. Still... nowadays many mormons seem so nice... it can't be a front, the religion must call out to people like that and then get passed along family lines along with politeness and hospitality training. You're right FIla, if I have to bunker down with any religious group.... hell I'll take the zombie's company first. At least then sleeping on high ground can get me away from them. @filadogI remember reading somewhere that the mormons used to live in missouri, but were forced to leave the state upon threat of death. I dont think they were even allowed time to sell their belongings; just carry what you can and get out! I hope they had a BoB. Anyway, they all seem pretty peaceful. PS - everyone always says all that they know crazy things about the mormons, but rarely does anyone actually repeat what they heard... im interested to learn too! share that craziness.
