Hello all. After returning from my second middle east deployment with the navy i used my nice reenlistment bonus to buy a car in maine. the other night whilst attempting to find a dark deserted spot to pull off the road and get lucky with the girl that was in my car i got stuck in the snow. I wasn’t so much off the road as i was just stuck in the road cause my car sunk in the 8 inches of packed snow. after attempting to rock it back and forth and all various means of being unstuck we had to call a tow truck to come get us. all in all it took about two hours to get unstuck. Ok moral of the story....... if this had been z day i would be screwed, so it inspired me to start piecing together an in car survival kit/bug out bag that will be behind my back seat ready to go. the initial investment was large but thats because i had to buy the bag along with alot of things i should have already had. so this is my kit from scratch, with more to be added later Back pack ( called a day pack it looks like a mini hiking pack) 29.88 multi tool (gerber) 27.97 D cell batteries ( 4 pack) 6.27 Glow sticks ( 2 packs, 2 sticks per pack) 2.00 EA Duct tape 3.27 8mm carabineer 2 pack 2.88 2 gallon gas can 7.50 Beef jerky 8.58 100 ft of rope ( not Para cord like i wanted) 4.48 1 qt of motor oil 3.92 trail mix bars 2.68 1 pound bag of trail mix4.98 Bungee cords x2 3.78 Water proof match holder ( about 30 matches inside) 1.00 4 pack of water proof matches 1.88 oil funnel .97 D Cell flashlight 2 pack. 3.00 1 pair of leather work gloves 6.47 first aid kit 9.97 24 pack of Poland Spring water 6.98 ( going to keep it all in the trunk, but have 3 or 4 bottles ready to go in the bag) Camp axe (hatchet) 6.88 total 147.34 Do you find this valuable?

Jumper cables, make sure the matches are strike anywhere. I would thow in a couple disposable bic lighters, some cheep candles, transmission fluid(can be used for power stearing, and break fluid in a pinch),Dont know what kind of car it is but some coolant/antifreeze(some newer cars take different kinds so check your manual) an Etool for digging(not the best in a snow bank but will get you out) a couple pair of socks, acouple pairs of gloves and hats. A spare hoodie or two. This is just off the top of my head.Fair winds Twidget thanks for serving our country Do you find this valuable? |

If oyu have a lot of snow, invest in some chains or the cloth alternative, and up here where we mostly have ice we also carry sand or another aggregate to throw under the tires for traction. Most people keep a full-sized shovel in their vehicle as well.

I would add:Shovel - folding will work, (in case, you need to dig your self out of mud, sand, or snow) Tools - a good tool kit will save your life Blanket or survival blanket Fix-a-Flat it could get you to safety, even with a small puncture in a tire. Road Flares or Reflecting triangles - to be seen in the dark, by other cars. Flares can also be used for light. Hand warmers - to keep you warm. That's all I could think of, I will have to look in my kit and see what I forgot. Although I keep buying more and more and end up with two or three of the same things. Do you find this valuable? |

Thanks for the input guys and the northern cold weather perspective. Tommorow ill be starting my cross country road trip back across the country and taking my new car out to san diego with me. so im not going to prep too much for the snow since ill only be up north for the beginning of tommorow. I expect to stop somewhere in PA for the first night . i know i deffinitly need a blanket and some sort of shelter if this is going to be a BOB as well as a car survival kit. the hand warmers are a good idea. tried looking for road flares but i couldnt get any. shovel seems useful even when im not up north. Now i just have to find if the San diego naval base is going to have a problem with the hatchet in my car. A basic socket set, a couple of screw drivers, make sure your jack is still in the car and the spare/repair kit is still good, though going on new car I'm guessing you're fine on that.As for the oil, you might want to swap out the quart for a 5-quart jug, just in case you lose the oil pan or the drain plug fails, something stupid like that. On a side note, make sure not to rev the car early on, drive it at varied speed, etc. Otherwise, you may find yourself burning oil from time to time, etc. Also, stupid one, but one a lot of people do: If you have a set of wheel locks, make sure the key is in your car. Personally, I zip tie it to my jack, if you turn it to the side they shear off by hand pretty easy. Do you find this valuable? |

The road flares are usually in the auto section of Walmart. I would love to head out to California. An excellent thing to have in your car kit for any reason is a cigarette lighter, cell phone charger. If you don't have one already. 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I keep what most would consider a BOB in the trunk of my car, I think of it as a Get Home Bag.Contents are simular to what the OP has with a few additions. I have a GI Poncho and liner as well as a small tarp on the bag. I also pack some candles. which can provide heat in a disabled car. Also have more food and a small radio Also carry In the trunk 2 wool blankets, down coat during the winter, good raincoat and a pair of boots. Also a peice of canvas as a ground cloth in case I have to get under the car or change a tire etc. Small tool kit in a GI canvas tool bag, plus a half size axe, Machete and a bow saw. Air pump that runs off your lighter and a can of fix a flat. Also some tire plugs and cement. One thing I do is replace my little "donut" spare with a full size one US federal law is that you can carry a gun in your car anywhere as long it is legal where you are coming from and where you are going to and that it is unloaded and locked someplace where it is not easly available to you such as your trunk or a locked box inside the car [not the glove box] I keep a .22 revolver and 100 Rds in my Bag then have a Mossberg riot shotgun in one of the folded blankets and a bag with 30 shells I keep an AR7 stored in it's stock and 500rds of ammo underneath my spare tire All this doesn't take up to much space, I drive a sub compact, and leaves lots of room in my trunk still Do you find this valuable? |

Surviving the zombie apocalypse with your buddies, Priceless. There are some things money can't buy.... But for everything else, there's bartering goods. Spare socks, strips of aluminum foil (jury riggin') a trashbag to keep it all water proofed and some antibacterial soap might all be handy and very cheap. =^_^= Do you find this valuable? |

I'd keep a set of extra clothes with it as well. Shirt, pants, socks, underwear and maybe a light jacket. you never know when you'll need fresh undies!
