What is the best knife for zpoc?
Apr 24 2011, 11:02 AM EDT | Post edited: Apr 24 2011, 11:02 AM EDT
I've been researching about knives for a while, and I wanted to have another person's point of view on the subject of which is the best knife. The knife must be relatively easy to get, tough, safe, and not too pricey. So far I've been thinking ka-bar or Kukri because they are available and at pretty good prices ($10-$50). 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I'd personally say Ka-Bar. I have two that fit all the criteria, and they seem to perfectly fit the overall "survival knife" philosophy.

It doesn't seem that the Kukri would be as versatile as the Ka-Bar; it looks like it was just designed as a weapon.

Also, if you're looking for a good knife, I'd really suggest spending more than $10. You tend to get what you pay for on knives.

Any knife that will hold a good edge. I have had cheap knives that hold a sharp edge longer and better than high price knifes. The brand doesn't matter, its the steel and the persons skill in honing the blade. Do you find this valuable?

I own a Ka-Bar and plan on making it a part of my setup, and it's a great knife, but is it the single *best* knife for the Z-Poc? I don't think so.

First, it's too big for many tasks. Try using a full-size Ka-Bar to clean a deer, much less a smaller animal like a squirrel. It's ungainly in this role. Second, finding one for less than $50 is going to be a hassle - it can be done, but it's at the very highest point in your $10-50 range. My last complaint is with the leather sheath, though this is a moot point because you can buy a new MOLLE sheath (way better!) for about $10.

I'm still rocking a Ka-Bar when SHTF, but I'm also carrying 2 or 3 smaller knives to use in conjunction with it for small tasks and prepping meals.

If I were looking for a "One Knife to Rule Them All" knife for under $50, it would be the SOG Seal Pup, which can also be found in the $45-60 range. It's a better knife that addresses all of the middle ground work.

In my set up I have:
1. 4 inch bladed K Bar knock off, as my primary blade
2. 4 inch bladed folding fillet knife, great for filleting fish, and skinning
3. Swiss Army knife (Tinkerer), good all around pocket knife, can use for skinning, can opening, screw driver, Philips screw driver, punch, and small blade.
4. Gerber Multi. tool, pliers, screw drivers, wire cutter, can opener, scissors, and more.

I agree with y'all, you'll need more than one knife.
In addition to the Ka-Bars, I've also got my normal carry knife (a Gerber folder) and some multi-tool that I don't even know where it came from.

Also, I do have a boxcutter knife in my BOB. I'm not really sure why; I just know it's sharp as hell and good for, erm, opening boxes.

Just wondering: Anyone know where I can find a Buck 120 General? I've wanted one for a long time, and can't get one off ebay.

It really depends on your personal opinion and comfort, most people will say a medium sized clip point fixed blade (small bowie, ka-bar, etc)

Personally i'm a firm beliver in carrying three blades, a small folder (think swiss army knife) a medium fixed blade, and a larger fixed blade (think kukri or machete)

Arguably they're all pretty good. Like JunkCollector it might be better to carry multiple ones.
A Swiss Army Knife(multiple uses), a Ka Bar is pretty good for all around, machetes and kukris are nice as they are pretty big. A switchblade might be better for a personal defense scenario.

Well the problem is that a Ka-Bar is a utility knife with combat being a secondary role so size is needed.

However wether large or small there will be trade offs.

So bearing this in mind I advise the OP to go instead with a survival knife system instead of singular options.

Large knife for brute work such as batoning (if need be) and other such things with a secondary use of being a weapon. Think a Becker BK-9, or a Ka-Bar.

Small folder with the single purpose of food prep from processing to cutting off a slice after cooking. Think Spyderco Soldier or a Tool Logic SLP2.

Finally a good multitool for utility tasks. Leatherman from what I hear makes a good multitool with a lot of tool options.

All bases are covered with this system but please don't feel restricted here. Look over as many options as you can to find the perfect tool For You.

Also try to go with standard blade shapes. Straight plain or partially serrated edge (your preference) with a good clip, or drop point.

Hope this helps.

Edit: Make sure the sheaths are as stiff as boards!

I have and love my Kbar, but a better general purpose knife is the USAF Survival knife, I have found it to have some slight advantages over a Kbar for most purposes(except combat).

But the multiple knife approach is the best. A fillet knife is worth its weight in gold for a lot of tasks. A small folder and a multitool(Leatherman or Swiss Army I am not participating in that debate). Also a good large knife, Kbar, Buck, USAF, etc

I have to agree, get a Ka-Bar. There are several previous threads that touch on this, you ought to check them out with the search bar! :) Do you find this valuable?

How about a Ka-Bar Kukri? Best of both worlds (sort-of...)

In all seriousness, most knives weren't designed for Z-day, so follow the guide. Don't stake your life on one knife.

So basically you guys are saying that I should get a combination of knives/blades.
I'm thinking one Kukri/machete for heavy work, a pocketknife/multi-tool for small work, and Ka-bar for everything else. I've actually seen a machete for $6 at Big 5 and a $20 machete at sport authority, I'm not sure which to choose. Also, I found a $20 or $30 Ka-bar online.

Generally speaking the 10 dollars and under stuff is not dependable.

At $20 it's hit or miss.

I love Benchmade knives but I've never seen a USA made one for less than $70 or $80. the taiwan-made red-box ones are around 40 or 50 though (I think). So I guess it's moot input but I'll be carrying my 3 Benchmades for versatility and bc of the quality Do you find this valuable?

There is no one single do-it-all knife. Look it at like this; would you grab the same kitchen knife to peel an apple that you would to carve a large ham? Obviously, having a battery of tools is better than not, but there's no way that $50 is going to get you into what you need if you're buying a bunch of knives. $50 simply isn't a big enough budget to buy a good machete, a good fighting/utility knife, a good skinning knife, and a good folding pocket knife - you'll buy a bunch of junk if you tried to spend just $50 on all of it.

You CAN buy one single knife that will do what you need for $50-$60, but you'll need to figure out what you're looking for out of the knife and some idea what you plan on doing with the knife.

Yeah, I knew that, I was mostly looking for an answer for which is better; Ka-bar or Kukri.

Best is pretty subjective.
I hate to sound like a broken record but I'd say a plain edged Ka-bar is probably your best bet.
